Etymology And Early History
The European settlement was started by refugee Huguenots in 1688, who were fleeing religious persecution in France after the king’s revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Many of the settlers were artisans and craftsmen from the city of La Rochelle, France, thus influencing the choice of the name of “New Rochelle”.

New York Picks Draftkings Fanduel And Others To Launch States Mobile Sports Betting Program
Only In New York: Sports bettors in New York will be able to legally place bets in the state soon as regulators approved nine operators to launch the state’s program.
New York state regulators approved online sports betting licenses for nine operators on Monday, including DraftKings, FanDuel, Resorts World and the online gambling arms of MGM and Wynn.
The legalization of online sports betting in New York is a big deal. There are 32 states that have legalized sports betting in the U.S., but only 18 that have legalized mobile wagering. New Yorks online sports betting market is expected to hit $1 billion in annual revenue, according to Macquarie. Annual tax revenue from online sports betting will hit $493 million by the beginning of 2025, the state estimates.
While mobile sports betting was made legal in April by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, its been legal to place in-person bets on sports in the state for years. But since the nearest casino to New York City to wager on sports is a two hour-drive to Resorts World Catskills, most sports gamblers chose to cross the Hudson River to New Jersey to place bets on their phones, which legalized online sports betting in 2018. An estimated 20% of the sports betting action in New Jersey comes from New Yorkers crossing the state border, according to a note published by Macquarie on Monday.

New Rochelle is a city in Westchester County, New York, United States, in the southeastern portion of the state. In 2010, the city had a population of 77,062, making it the seventh-largest in the state of New York.
Ct State Trooper Dies After Cruiser Was Swept Away In Flooding
A state trooper has died after his cruiser was swept away in floodwaters in Woodbury early Thursday morning.
State law enforcement officials confirmed the trooper, Sgt. Brian Mohl, was on duty at the time his cruiser was overwhelmed by the floodwaters from the Pomperaug River, making this a line of duty death.
Col. Stavros Mellekas described Mohl as a well-respected senior sergeant who has served 26 years with the department. He started at the State Police Training Academy on November 25, 1994 and graduated the following June. He was first assigned to Troop A in Southbury before being transferred to Troop L when he was promoted to sergeant in 2000. He has also served at Troop B in North Canaan, Troop G in Bridgeport and Troop H in Hartford.
This is the 25th line of duty death recorded in Connecticut State Police history.
Heavy rain swept through the state between Wednesday and early Thursday morning as the remnants of Ida moved through and state police said a state trooper who was on duty contacted state police around 3:30 a.m. and said he was in distress and that his cruiser was being swept away in the area of Jacks Bridge.

The cruiser was found later this morning and the trooper was located and flown to Yale New Haven Hospital, officials said.
The officer of the chief medical examiner determined Mohl died of blunt force trauma and his death was ruled an accident.

We Must Take Action Now At The Federal Level To Make Polluters Pay
Congress may respond. In the U.S. Senate, Senator Van Hollen of Maryland joined by Vermont Senator Sanders, Massachusetts Senators Markey and Warren, and others advanced a proposal to make these climate polluters pay $500 billion toward the infrastructure costs that the nation faces to address climate change. Following the Senates announcement, New York Congressional Representative Bowman pledged to advance a matching bill in the House of Representatives.
The Senators model their legislation on the nations toxic waste site clean-up “Superfund” law, which uses a “polluter must pay” model. The aim is to hold fossil fuel companies responsible for costs tied to the climate crisis, which is the fairest and most just way to proceed.

Brewster High School Student Represents Putnam County In The New York State Governors Youth Council
Brewster High School junior Franceska Drejaj will represent Putnam County on the New York State Governors Youth Council. The Youth Council gives young people a voice on important issues, ensuring that the governor and other policymakers hear their opinions. Every county in New York State has a youth representative who works with other youth from surrounding counties.
Franceska was thrilled when she found out she had been chosen to represent Putnam County.
I think it was the most rewarding feeling I’ve ever had, she said. To know that I was chosen to represent my county on a state level was, and still is, such a great honor. It’s an opportunity that few kids get, so I truly felt like the luckiest sixteen year old in the world.
Every few months, the Youth Council is tasked with considering specific issues facing policymakers. Sometimes there is a single topic other times there are multiple topics and representatives choose which one to explore. Once they have a topic, they work together to research and write a proposal. Usually, the proposals are presented in front of an audience, but, due to COVID restrictions, they currently record their proposal and send it to the state for approval and overview. Franceskas first meeting as part of the Youth Council took place over Zoom in late August.

Th And 20th Centuries
Through the 18th century, New Rochelle had remained a modest village that retained an abundance of agricultural land. During the 19th century, however, New York City was a destination from the mid-century on by waves of immigration, principally from Ireland and Germany. More established American families left New York City and moved into this area. Although the original Huguenot population was rapidly shrinking in relative size, through ownership of land, businesses, banks, and small manufactures, they retained a predominant hold on the political and social life of the town.
The 1820 Census showed 150 African-Americans residing in New Rochelle, six of whom were still slaves. The state abolished slavery by degrees: children of slave mothers were born free, and all slaves were freed by 1827.
In 1857 the Village of New Rochelle was established within the borders of the Town of New Rochelle. A group of volunteers created the first fire service in 1861. In 1899, a bill creating the New Rochelle City Charter was signed by Governor Theodore Roosevelt. It was through this bill that the Village and Town of New Rochelle were joined into one municipality. In 1899, Michael J. Dillon narrowly defeated Hugh A. Harmer to become New Rochelle’s first mayor. The recently established city charter designated a board of aldermen as the legislative unit with two members to be elected from each of four wards and 10 elected from the city at-large.

Monroe County Legislator Robert Colby represents the 20th Legislative District, which includes the Town of Ogden and portions of the Towns of Greece and Sweden. Robert was first appointed to the Legislature in 2004, elected that November, re-elected in the fall of 2009, and again in 2011. He left the legislature in 2015 due to term-limits and was reappointed on October 8, 2020, to fill a vacant seat. Legislator Colby currently serves as Chairman of the Transportation Committee and as a member of the Human Services Committee.
Outside the Legislature, Robert is very active in his hometown of Ogden. He has been a member of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce for more than a decade and served on the Master Planning Committee since 1999. Robert is also a member of the Ogden Youth Hall of Fame Committee, serving on it since 2000.
A strong advocate for the agricultural community, Legislator Colby has been on the Monroe County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board for almost 30 years, joining the board in 1992. He is a former member of the Monroe County Planning Board and Monroe County Open Space Initiative Review Committee since 2001. He is former President of the Monroe County Farm Bureau, holding the post from 1994-1999, and was a member of the Board of Directors from 1989-1999. Robert served on the Board of Directors of the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, Inc., and Dairy One, where he was a delegate for eleven years before joining the board.

Following the September 9th party primaries, NY voters will elect representatives on November 4th in all 63 Senate Districts, including the 27 that represent parts of New York City, and all 150 State Assembly Districts, including the 66 that represent parts of New York City. The elections include the 13 currently vacant seats and the 8 seats for which incumbents have chosen not to seek re-election.

Legislator Jackie Smith represents the 2nd legislative district, which includes the towns of Clarkson, Hamlin, and Sweden. She was elected to a two-year term, her first, in November 2019. Jackie is Chairwoman of the Planning & Economic Development Committee and member of the Transportation and Human Services Committees.
Prior to joining the Monroe County Legislature, Jackie served her community as a member of the Clarkson Town Board. In her time on the Town Board, she was a strong proponent of community resources, such as the Seymour Library and the Sweden Clarkson Recreation Center. Jackie has been involved in a number of community organizations over the years, such as Clarkson Good Neighbor Day, the Seymour Library After Hours Committee, and the Clarkson 5K Race Committee. She is currently active as Treasurer or the Clarkson Historical Society and as a volunteer with the BISCO Arts Festival.
Jackie is a graduate of Brockport High School and Monroe Community College. She works as an Education and Training Coordinator for Wegmans Food Marks. She and her husband, Kevin, are lifelong Monroe County residents and currently live in Clarkson. They have three children, Samantha, Ashley, and Kevin.
