Where Can I Bet On Sports In New York

What Makes For A Good Mobile Sports Betting App

Sports betting at upstate NY casinos can begin in May

When mobile sports betting launches in New York, bettors will have many sportsbooks to choose from. There are a few things that bettors can look for to tell a good sportsbook app from a mediocre or poor one: navigation, seamless deposits, bet access, and bet tracking.

First, a sportsbook should be easy to navigate. Great odds dont do any good if bettors cant find them. If bettors hate trying to find their way through a sportsbook, they dont have to put up with that. There are plenty of apps with great odds and promotions with seamless interfaces.

Next, a good sportsbook should make depositing money simple. Depositing funds is obviously a critical part of the sports betting process. A good sportsbook app will make it quick and easy for bettors to connect a bank account or a card to fund their accounts.

Bettors should have easy access to their favorite types of bets too. Some sportsbooks have navigation tabs just for all their sports and live or featured betting lines. These quick navigational tools can make finding bettors favorite types of bets easy.

Finally, good sportsbooks should make it easy for bettors to keep track of their bets. If bettors place multiple wagers on a bet slip, then they should be able to tell which bets have closed and which havent. Bettors shouldnt have to do a ton of work to see how their bets play out.

New York Sports Betting Market

When NY goes live with mobile sports betting, the state figures to be one of the largest in the country. Its unclear how much of the current New Jersey handle is coming from NY users, but there is definitely some % coming from NY residents. With NJ pulling in 4.5 billion in total handle in 2019, the total for NY must be higher.

Depositing And Withdrawing At New York Online Sportsbooks

Again, although online sportsbooks are not yet available in New York, we have a pretty good idea what to expect from other states that have already legalized sports gambling.

Once youve signed up, the next step is to deposit money into your account. Every sportsbook is different, but below are some of the most commonly accepted ways to deposit.

  • Visa
  • PayNearMe use cash to deposit at local 7-Eleven stores
  • In-person deposits at the casino

Depending on how you would like to deposit money, you should be able to find a sportsbook that suits you.

Withdrawing can take a couple of extra days depending on the option you choose and you cant withdraw back to some methods, like credit cards.

It remains to be seen exactly how NY online sportsbooks will operate but rest assured that sportsbooks will accept lots of the most popular payment methods.

New York Sports Betting Laws Snapshot

November Chumpservations, Part Two: Tim Lincecum, Las ...

New Yorks push for legal sports betting really began in 2013, when the state passed a law to allow sports betting at four physical casinos. The law, which was based on a statewide referendum, explicitly mentions the following four casinos:

  • Del Lago Resort & Casino
  • Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady
  • Tioga Downs Casino

These are the locations where in-person betting will first be available in New York, sometime in 2019.

Although the 2013 law was passed, sports betting did not come into effect. The reason for this was the existence of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act , which acted as a federal ban on sports betting.

The 2013 New York bill lay dormant for five years until the Supreme Court ruled to repeal PASPA in a landmark case that concluded in May 2018. With no federal ban, New Yorks 2013 law could come into effect.

Since PASPA was repealed, the state has been working on finalizing the regulations. At the end of January 2019, the New York State Gaming Commission gave preliminary approval, meaning sports betting is expected to go live in those four locations in February or March 2019.

At the same time, there has been a push to pass a new bill which would introduce wider legalization, including mobile betting which was not included in the 2013 bill. There is also the question of sports betting at tribal casinos, which needs to be clarified.

Court Ruling Throws Online Sports Betting Push In New York Into Question

A customer makes a sports bet at the Race & Sports SuperBook in Las Vegas.

ALBANY Legalizing online sports gambling in New York State already faced a questionable future in Albany this year.

But after last weeks appeals court ruling declaring illegal the states daily fantasy sports betting program, the broader and far more lucrative sports gambling initiative could now face even more hardened opposition.

I think we get a little more credibility with our arguments because we won the case, said Cornelius Murray, an Albany lawyer who has pursued a number of legal challenges over the years against proliferation of gambling programs in New York. He represented several New York residents opposed to the fantasy sports.

Critics and supporters of online sports wagering agree the case involving daily fantasy sports, or DFS as the industry calls it, involves different legal questions than the ones surrounding mobile sports gambling.

A midlevel appeals court last week said the New York State Legislature overstepped its authority in 2016 when it declared daily fantasy sports is not a form of gambling banned by the state constitution. The courts majority wrote that the Legislature does not have unfettered discretion to say what is, and is not, gambling. That power is reserved to the constitutional amendment process, which involves voters of the state, according to the court.

We do need the revenue. You do not cut yourself out of a $6 billion deficit,” said the senator.

New York Picks Draftkings Fanduel And Others To Launch States Mobile Sports Betting Program

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Calls To Legalize Mobile Sports Betting, Marijuana

Only In New York: Sports bettors in New York will be able to legally place bets in the state soon as regulators approved nine operators to launch the state’s program.

New York state regulators approved online sports betting licenses for nine operators on Monday, including DraftKings, FanDuel, Resorts World and the online gambling arms of MGM and Wynn.

The legalization of online sports betting in New York is a big deal. There are 32 states that have legalized sports betting in the U.S., but only 18 that have legalized mobile wagering. New Yorks online sports betting market is expected to hit $1 billion in annual revenue, according to Macquarie. Annual tax revenue from online sports betting will hit $493 million by the beginning of 2025, the state estimates.

While mobile sports betting was made legal in April by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, its been legal to place in-person bets on sports in the state for years. But since the nearest casino to New York City to wager on sports is a two hour-drive to Resorts World Catskills, most sports gamblers chose to cross the Hudson River to New Jersey to place bets on their phones, which legalized online sports betting in 2018. An estimated 20% of the sports betting action in New Jersey comes from New Yorkers crossing the state border, according to a note published by Macquarie on Monday.

Governor Cuomo Suggests Mobile Sports Betting

Mobile sports betting in New York is not legal statewide yet. If you are on the premises of an upstate NY casino, you can use your mobile device to place a sports bet. There are currently seven physical sportsbooks that are legal and live in upstate New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo blocked a number of bills presented to legalize sports betting across the state of New York over the past year. However, on December 16th in a COVID briefing in Albany, NY. When discussing ways to address what Cuomo has said to be a $50 billion debt between the state and local governments, Cuomo said, .And, are there other ways to get revenue? How about marijuana? How about sports betting? Marijuana, we were supposed to have done for the past two years anyway and would raise revenue. This is all hard. But pressure also forges diamonds You can watch the entire briefing here. This is a stark difference from Cuomos position on mobile sports betting over the past two years. The result is an injection of optimism from NY residents, the sports betting industry, and Wall Street. Sports betting stocks such as DKNG , PENN , and PDYPY are benefiting.

Once mobile sports betting becomes legal, the following are our projected Top 3 mobile sports betting apps. While we dont know the date they will be available statewide nor their offer, we can look at existing states and project their offers.

The Pros And Cons Of New York Sports Betting

New York will be offering mobile sports betting in the not too distant future. Residents and visitors will soon be able to place wagers from home, their favorite sports bar, or anywhere else in NY.

Until then, New Yorkers will be limited to in-person bets. Its still unclear what the competitive landscape will look like with the arrival of online sportsbooks, but with providers forking over up to 50% of all revenue to the state, they may not be able to pass along the best odds to bettors.

  • Mobile betting is on the way
  • Few events are off-limits
  • Nearby states offer fully online betting
  • Sky-high tax rates for future online providers may lead to unfavorable betting lines
  • Upstate-only retail sportsbooks

New York boasts world-renowned golf courses that often hold PGA Tour events. In September 2020, the Winged Foot Golf Club in Westchester County hosted the U.S. Open Championship. Turning Stone Casino also offers both a sportsbook and golf course that hosts PGA events, all on the same Verona property.

Another New York favorite is betting on NASCAR and other auto racing events. Watkins Glen International hosts these events in every professional auto-racing sector, including the NASCAR Cup Series.

Interestingly for sports bettors, Watkins Glen is one of only two NASCAR tracks where the competitors race clockwise, which adds a variable to an already exciting and unpredictable sport. Everywhere else, competitors race counterclockwise.

At all US sportsbooks, including those in New York, international soccer is one of the most popular choices for bettors. The English Premier League and other European divisions attract a large number of in-state wagers.

Is Sports Betting Legal In Ny

Betting on sports in New York is limited to the BetRivers Sportsbook in Schenectady, the FanDuel Sportsbook at Tioga Downs, the DraftKings Sportsbook at del Lago Resort Casino, Turning Stone in Verona, Point Place in Bridgeport, Yellow Brick Road in Chittenango, Resorts World Catskills in Monticello, and Akwesasne Mohawk Casino in Hogansburg.

That means that the closest sportsbook in New York is nearly two hours from New York City.

You know where the closest sportsbooks are to New York City? Theyre in New Jersey!

Seems bass ackwards, as they like to say, but thats how things are currently set up in the Empire State.

So, lets focus on that for a little bit and tell you about the places to go in order to place your sports bets.

Keep in mind that Pennsylvania and New Jersey are both remote registration states, which means that you can sign up for a sports betting account from anywhere, but you need to be physically located in an approved jurisdiction in order to place your bets. So you can sign up from home, but you have to place your bets in that state.

If you are willing to drive or take a train, you can place your bets right on your smartphone or laptop by heading to New Jersey or Pennsylvania.

Two Coalitions Win Bids

The online sportsbook license bidding process in New York included two coalitions of companies that are well-known in the gambling industry.

The first includes Wynn Interactive, Caesars Sportsbook, Resorts World and Rush Street. Those four companies all are major players in the online sportsbook world and already operate online sportsbooks in other states.

The second coalition includes two of the giants in the fantasy sports world DraftKings and FanDuel as well as two veterans of the casino industry Ballys Interactive and BetMGM.

While many bettors may be excited to hear some of these well-known names be approved for sports betting licenses in New York, some others were not so happy. There were, in fact, some lawmakers in the state capital who were hoping that some other players would be approved for licenses, and not just the good old boy systems, as state Assemblyman Gary Pretlow said.

One person the states Gaming Commission passed over was Jay-Z. He had teamed with sports apparel company Fanatics to make a bid for an online sports gambling license in New York.

The sports gambling division of that company will have Jay-Z as its vice chairman, with the founder of Fanatics, Michael Rubin, serving as the CEO. The former CEO of FanDuel, Matt King, was also expected to play a part in the sports gambling division.

For now at least, that partnership wont have access to online sports gambling in the Empire State.

New York City Sports Betting: Why No Downstate Sportsbooks

NJ Is First State With $1 Billion In Monthly Sports Betting

Why are there no retail sportsbooks in New York City? Despite being the largest metropolitan area by both population and square miles, Downstaters need to travel Upstate or wait for the launch of legal online sportsbooks early next year.

Only four commercial casinos in Upstate and tribal casinos were approved to offer sports betting. That means the largest casino in the state, Resorts World Casino New York City, does not currently offer sports betting.
