A Brooklyn Bridge Walking Experience

One of the most epic engineering feats in history – Alex Gendler

Now that you have all the necessary background information, lets dive into what a Brooklyn Bridge walking experience is all about. I will go about the walk starting at the Brooklyn Bridge Blvd / Tillary Street entrance as that would be my recommended route here.

After getting off the subway or coming from a nearby spot in Brooklyn, you will first make the walk to the Brooklyn Bridge Blvd / Tillary Street intersection. Once at the intersection, cross the street to the middle divider, where the pedestrian walkway begins.

You will begin the official walk from here as you head northbound on the walkway. For the first portion, you will be on ground level with cars on either side of you, and a portion of the nearby Manhattan bridge in view out in the distance.

The pathway will then soon curve to the left, when you will then begin to see the Brooklyn Bridge itself with the Manhattan skyline right behind it.

From here it is a straight shot right towards the heart of the bridge, as the walkway begins to gain a bit of elevation and the walkway goes above the main street level. The walkway itself will turn from the concrete pavement to the wooden plank walkway as you are now on the official bridge portion of the walk.

Depending where you are on the bridge, you will see that your views will be slightly different. In some spots you will be surrounded by the suspension cables, where in other spots, the walkway may feel a bit more open.

Designing Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park extends 1.3 miles along the East River on a defunct cargo shipping and storage complex. The ambitious park design sought to transform this environmentally hostile site into a thriving civic landscape while preserving the dramatic experience of the industrial waterfront. This site also presented excellent opportunities including its adjacency to two thriving residential communities and its unparalleled viewsheds to the fabled Lower Manhattan skyline.

Brooklyn Bridge Parks lush lawns, young trees and beautiful flowers have created a robust landscape and brought nature to this former industrial site. Public access to the long, narrow site was enabled by urban junctions, neighborhood parks at key entry points that transition between the park and adjacent residential communities. These entry parks host program such as dog runs, civic lawns and playgrounds, which foster community stewardship and the safety that comes with constant occupation.

Brooklyn Bridge Park introduces variety to a previously monofunctional industrial waterfront. Unlike other waterfront parks, where visitors remain perched above the water, Brooklyn Bridge Park encourages close interaction with the water. The parks diverse edge types reveal the dynamic nature of New York Harbor. Salt marshes, boat ramps, beaches, and waterfront promenades provide visitors with a unique opportunity to interact with the water.

What Is The Largest Steel Arch Bridge In The World

At time of construction, the New River Gorge Bridges arch made it the longest steel arch bridge in the world, a title it held until 2003 with the construction of Chinas Shanghais Lupu Bridge. It is currently the longest single-span steel arch bridge in the United States and the third highest bridge in the country.

Length Of Walk Across Brooklyn Bridge

How long does it take to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge?? Is it worth walking the whole way?? Thanks!

From end to end, the Brooklyn Bridge is about 6,100 feet — and a mile is 5,280. How long does it take you to walk something over a mile?

Since you cannot start halfway across, and walking from one end halfway out and then turning back is the same distance as walking in one direction all the way, the decision is really between walking the bridge and not walking it at all. And yes, it certainly is worth walking.

Start in Brooklyn and walk back to Manhattan. Yes, totally worth it.

So I guess there’s a subway station across the other end that I can take back to the Manhatten side. Is that right??

The more interesting view is Manhattan, and the more comfortable way to view it is to walk towards it, rather than looking over your shoulder as you walk away from it. Therefore, the thing to do is to take the subway to BROOKLYN, and to walk BACK to Manhattan. Look at the link QB gave you to my earlier post there are directions to the walkway from most stations/subway lines serving Brooklyn Heights and downtown Brooklyn.

How long did it took u guys to walk over the bridge??

Thanks for all of your response =)

A must do, and yes, there is a subway right across the street when you exit the bridge on

Brooklyn Bridge Walk Entrance Directions

Although there are 4 main entrances to choose from here, I will talk about the directions to the main Brooklyn entrance at the corner of Tillary Street & Brooklyn Bridge Blvd.

Once you are off the subway , you will want to make your way to the main Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard.

The Boulevard essentially starts right at Borough Hall one of the main subway stops here. Prior to switching names to Brooklyn Bridge Boulevard, the street will be called Boerum Place.

You will want to walk north along Brooklyn Bridge Blvd until you reach the intersection at Tillary Street. It is important not to miss the intersection here because the walkway starts in the middle of the multi lane street.

Pictured below is the very start of the walkway . From here you will continue to walk northbound on the pathway, where soon enough it will curve towards the Brooklyn Bridge itself.

You should begin to get those views in no time and from there it is a straight shot down the pathway towards Manhattan.

Best Views Of The Brooklyn Bridge From Brooklyn

Next up is a list of the top spots to view the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn. All of the spots on this list will be from the Dumbo & Brooklyn Heights neighborhoods since that is essentially the only place in Brooklyn with views of the bridge.

More specifically, these views will mostly be along Brooklyn Bridge Park. The park is 1+ miles long that hugs the East River and is full of piers, walkways, parks, restaurants and more. Again, I will go north to south here:

From Brooklyn, use the Brooklyn Bridge Pedestrian Walkway.

This begins at the intersection of Tillary Street and Boerum Place or access the pedestrian walkway via the staircase located in the underpass on Washington Street/Cadman Plaza East and Prospect Street.

From Manhattan, use the entrance at Park Row and Centre Street, across from City Hall Park.

How Long Does It Take To Walk The Brooklyn Bridge

What Happened During the Construction of the Brooklyn Bridge

The walk is about 1.3 miles long . It should take you about 60 minutes at a leisurely pace , giving you time to take in the views and snap some photos. At a brisk pace, you’re looking at 20 to 25 minutes.

There are a few things that might slow you down. First, the bridge gets very crowded. If you’re walking across it at a peak time, you’ll only be able to walk as fast as the crowd. You may also take longer if you take tons of photos , are traveling with kids, or a have any mobility issues.

Here are a few things that will make your walk more pleasant, no matter how long it takes you:

  • Wear sunscreen and possibly a giant, floppy hat … ha! There’s very little shade on the bridge, so plan on being exposed to the sun the whole time.
  • You’ll be exposed to the weather, whether it’s hot out or cold . Dress appropriately.
  • There’s nowhere to buy food on the bridge, although you may run across someone selling water bottles. Bring your own to be on the safe side.
  • Go to the bathroom before you start your walk. If you forget, you’ll need to hold it.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge walkway is made of narrow, wood slats and features a gradual incline on either end. It’s not a difficult walk, but you’ll be most comfortable wearing flat-soled shoes.
  • If you’re looking for cheesy/cheap souvenirs, you’ll probably find a few vendors selling them on the Manhattan side of the bridge .

Entrance on Brooklyn Bridge Promenade on Centre Street OR Park Row Underpass

Brooklyn Bridge Promenade on Centre Street if you make your way to the New York City Hall area, just head to the eastern part of it, where you will then cross Centre Street and onto the promenade itself. From here just walk straight along the pathway and onto the bridge.

Park Row Underpass there is also a lesser known entrance to the walkway on Park Row. Park Row is a street that heads under the Brooklyn Bridge promenade. If walking along the street, there is a staircase entrance that will take you right onto the walkway.

Pier 1 And Fulton Ferry Landing

Would love to visit the Brooklyn Bridge a lot of friends are from there ...

Pier 1 was the first section of parkland, having opened in March 2010. It is located directly south of the Brooklyn Bridge and the EmpireFulton Ferry section of the park. The pier is Brooklyn Bridge Park’s largest and is the only one constructed on filled land rather than pilings. The area includes two landscaped lawns overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge and New York Harbor, a salt marsh with native plants, a playground, a granite lookout, a waterfront walkway, and various food and drink concessions.

Fulton Ferry Landing is directly adjacent to Pier 1, on the site of Brooklyn’s first ferry landing, which opened in 1642. Reopened to the public in 1997, Fulton Ferry Landing provides views of the Manhattan skyline and houses the classical music venue Bargemusic. The landing includes an old fireboat house, which formerly housed the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory between 2001 and 2018. Since 2019, the fireboat house has been run by two concessionaires. The New York Water Taxi and NYC Ferry are also accessible from the landing. The landing contains railings upon which are engraved the Walt Whitman poem “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry“, as well as a deck with bronze reliefs of historic events nearby. A pavilion adjacent to the fireboat house was proposed for Fulton Ferry Landing in 2019, but was delayed due to objections by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Where To Stay In Manhattan

There are so many different neighborhoods to choose from when visiting Manhattan. Below are some of my top choices for a few of my recommended locations in the city:

Chelsea: If you are looking to be well situated between uptown, midtown, and downtown, then Chelsea can be a great option for you. You have highlights such as the Highline, Chelsea Market, the Vessel, and the Hudson River right nearby.

And if you are looking to head to Central Park uptown or the World Trade Center area further downtown, then you are just a quick subway ride away. Recommended Chelsea hotels:

Cambria Hotel | Hyatt House | Moxy NYC

Midtown: Right in the middle of the action is the midtown area, where you have the one and only Times Square, and all Broadway shows right at your doorstep.

You are also within walking distance to the southern end of Central Park. Almost all subway lines connect at Times Square so getting around should not be an issue. Recommended Midtown hotels:

LUMA Hotel | citizenM Hotel | Aliz Hotel

Tribeca: If you are trying to stay in downtown Manhattan, then I would recommend looking into the Tribeca area. Staying here and you will be just a stones throw away from the World Trade Center area, 9/11 Memorial Pools & Museum, and the hop on point for the Statue of Liberty.

You will also be pretty close by the Manhattan side entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Recommended Tribeca Hotels:

How Long Is The Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is approximately 1.1 miles in length .

However, entrances for the pedestrian walkway are approximately 1.6 miles apart .

Most visitors will not walk the complete promenade, as there are a couple of places where one can reach the promenade along the way.

For example, many visitors will start from the Manhattan side of the bridge and walk to the High Street subway station.

There they will catch the A or C train back into Manhattan, which is 1.4 miles in length .

This is the length that you should consider when calculating the time needed to cross the bridge.

Subway To Brooklyn Bridge

Unless you are already staying close to either entrance and are walking distance to the start, you most likely will be utilizing the NYC subway.

Luckily, there are plenty of subway options to choose from and no matter where you are coming from, you shouldnt have an issue getting close by.

I would highly recommend using the subway , as it can be much cheaper and sometimes even faster than a taxi or Uber. One-way Metrocards cost $2.75 per trip.

What To See In The Brooklyn Bridge

Brooklyn Bridge | History of Architectural Design | World’s Greatest Structures

The Brooklyn Bridge Park DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights is a gorgeous spot covering about 1.3 miles alongside the waterfront. The park is enriched with thousands of lanes for runners, bikers, and walkers. The Brooklyn Bridge Park is the best destination for fitness activities, running, walking, or renting a bike. And one more thing, you can also enjoy some yoga or bodyweight exercises.

Dont miss out on trying the exciting experience of New York Water Taxi or NYC Ferry taking you from Manhattan to Brooklyn or vice versa, where you can enjoy the beauty of the Brooklyn Bridge below from the water. The New York Water Taxi is a sightseeing cruise taking you around admired city landmarks by water.

One of the most iconic and well-admired things to do in New York City is to walk along the Brooklyn Bridge and soak in the stunning views and landmarks. However, the walking way is mainly populated with flying selfie sticks, but its undoubtedly worth it. Just as a friendly piece of advice, stay in the pedestrian lanes while walking the bridge.
