Parking In The Bronx Near The Zoo And Arthur Ave

We plan to visit the Bronx Zoo on a Wednesday in October, stopping on Arthur Ave for lunch before heading to the zoo. What is parking like near Arthur Ave? Mainly street parking? I did find one designated parking area near Fordham University on Google maps. I would like to be able to just park once and have lunch then walk over the zoo and enter through the pedestrian entrance on Southern Blvd. Any suggestions?

Do you need to have a car? If you’re driving into the city, what would really be easiest would be to dump your car somewhere and make use of public transportation.

The zoo has a parking lot but it’s paid of course. Otherwise find street parking if you can decipher the no-parking signs and stay away from hydrants.

We’ve always parked in the zoo lot so not a problem there. . There is some street parking, if you go in the afternoon you may luck out and find a spot if someone is leaving the zoo. We always go in the morning.

As far as Arthur Ave, we’ve always easily found streeet parking. I’ve never been on a weekday only a weekend, though. It was metered, and we never spent that much time there. I don’t know how long the max is on the meter.

I personally wouldn’t walk it. It is pretty far and not very scenic.

I’m going to have to ask about the car too, are you driving in from somewhere else into the Bronx just for the day? or are you staying in NYC for an extended trip and wanting to do the Bronx as a day excursion?

A 10-year quest by residents and merchants along Arthur Avenue in the Bronx ended yesterday with the opening of the first off-street parking lot in the busy shopping district of Italian food stores and restaurants.

Borough President Stanley Simon and Representative Mario Biaggi, a Bronx Democrat, joined local officials in hailing the 58-car outdoor lot as another step in the commercial revitalization of the district. The area is in the borough’s largely Italian Belmont section.

The lot’s acquisition and construction cost the city $589,000, roughly $10,000 a parking space. Abel Silver, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Transportation, said that largely because of a large granite outcropping on the site, construction costs amounted to $240,000. ”Without the granite, it would have cost a lot less,” he said.

The parking lot complements the recently completed $550,000 modernization of the 40-year-old Arthur Avenue retail market. The market, which specializes in meat and produce, extends along Arthur Avenue from 184th to 186th Street.
