How The New York Times Free Student Subscriptions Strategy Will Pay Off

It does not come as a surprise that most digital publishers look to the New York Times for subscription strategy advice: On February 6th, The failing New York Times posted digital revenue of $709 million for 2018, based largely on its 3.4 million digital subscriptions. It also bucked expectations when it came to its ability to attract new subscribers. The NYT added 265,000 new digital subscriptions in the last quarter of 2018, which it calls the biggest gain since the months immediately following the 2016 election. As a result, the paper has set itself the new goal of having 10 million subscriptions by 2025.

This all suggests that while the Trump bump was a reality, there is more to the NYTs success than simply being the target of The Presidents ire. In an interview with Ken Doctor, the NYTs Chief Executive Mark Thompson attributes much of its success to steady investment in the newsroom which he calls a very simple, old-fashioned model through having the highest number of journalists on staff in the papers history.

The vast majority of news publishers, however, do not have the coffers of a national title. Later in the interview, Thompson acknowledges that the NYT has unreplicable advantages when it comes to adding staff. However, the New York Times is employing a strategy that more publishers can and should emulate: Its giving its news away for free to 3 million students.

That chart I listed above also exposes what I covered the last time I wrote about this topic that if you want unlimited digital access to the New York Times , youre better off taking the print edition on a weekend or Sunday basis. Youll save a few bucks.

Got that? The New York Times will actually charge you less for unlimited digital if you just get the dead tree version and throw it away.

That doesnt say much about the real value of either the print or digital versions. They both must be overpriced if theres an option where a copy can be printed each day, tossed on my doorstep by a human being and yet cost less than an all-digital subscription.

But then again, this is from a publication that seems to think loyal readers should pay it money while non-loyal users get everything for free. Consider this from from Denise Warren, the executive vice president for the New York Times digital products group, in a recent AdAge interview:

You can sample the Times core product 10 articles a month and you can come to us through search and social. So now youll be able to sample Opinion content, but if you want to drink deeply, if youre loyal and cant get enough of it, youre going to be asked to pay.

Loyalty has little to do with all this. Those buying subscriptions are doing so, as best I can tell, for two reasons: stupidity and convenience.

Signing up for a NYT subscription is easywith just a few clicks, anyone can sign up in seconds, without having to interact with a representative.

But canceling your subscription? Thats another story. Take a look at everything I had to do to unsubscribe:

First, I had to find where to unsubscribe, a process taking at least three screens after logging in and accessing my account.

Then, once I found the right buttons to click, I had to either call to speak to a representative or use the online chat function.

Already the process of unsubscribing was more time-consuming than the original sign-up, but heres where the Times uses an intentionally sticky user interface to get customers to stay.

Since it was later than the specified business hours, I had to use the chat function. I knew Id forget to call later, so I went ahead and clicked on the begin chat option. Little did I know this would lead to a several-minute negotiation with an agent who tried to convince me to stay.

I told the representative I wanted to cancel. Then I was offered reasons not to. I responded with no thanks each time. Then, I waited for the representative to reply and come back with several rounds of offers to get me not to cancel. On and on, the process went until I was finally allowed to leave.

Isnt cancelling your subscription easy?

While it took seconds to start the subscription, it took several minutes of back-and-forthing with the representative to cancelclassic roach motel.
