Wave Of Political Killings Breeds Climate Of Fear Ahead Of Vote
SAN LUIS, Honduras Nearly 30 candidates, political activists and their relatives have been killed in the run-up to Sundays elections in Honduras, creating a climate of fear that rights groups said could impact the outcome of the tightly contested vote.
Political violence has long marred elections in Honduras, which until recently had one of the worlds highest overall homicide rates. But lethal attacks on politicians and party activists have more than doubled this year compared with the prelude to the previous election in 2017, making Honduras one of the most dangerous places in the world in which to campaign for office, according to Isabel Maria Albaladejo, the local representative of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Theres no evidence implicating Mr. Hernández in the killings, which have also claimed the lives of his partys activists, but rights groups said the violence benefits the incumbent by depressing turnout and silencing dissent.
The government has dismissed the spike in the killings, saying that all but one of them had no connection with politics. Most did not lead to arrests.
The effect is to create fear in the population, to demoralize people when the time comes to vote, said Migdonia Ayestas, the director of the Observatory of Violence at the Autonomous National University of Honduras.
No one has been detained for that fatal shooting or the attack on the child, Abraham, which occurred in the presence of several witnesses.

The New York Times Aims To Convert Newsletter Readers Into Paid Subscribers As The Morning Newsletter Tops 1 Billion Opens
The New York Times flagship morning newsletter The Morning hit a milestone in January 2021: over 1 billion unique opens since it launched in May 2020.
The newsletter represents a direct and important relationship between the Times and its readers, and a path to converting daily newsletter subscribers into subscribers of The New York Times journalism, according to Adam Pasick, editorial director of newsletters at The New York Times.
Newsletters are a great way to grow a subscription business. Subscribing to a newsletter is a healthy habit that can bear fruits down the line, said Pasick. However, the strategy for converting The Mornings subscribers to Times subscribers is still in progress, and we are continuing to learn how to optimize that dynamic, he said. The Times would not share how many subscribers have been converted from the newsletter. A digital subscription to the Times currently costs $8 a month for the first year, before going up to $17 a month.
The Times also would not say how many people subscribe to The Morning newsletter, which is the publishers largest newsletter. The average open rate is significantly higher than when we launched in 2020, according to Jordan Cohen, executive director of communications at the Times, and the vast majority of opens for The Morning occur within the first three hours of it being sent, due to the West Coast time zone, noted Pasick.

The fire was started at about 7 a.m. on Sunday in the womans room on the top floor of the hotel in far north Queensland, police said. It then spread to neighboring rooms.

Governors Urge Caution In The United States On The Omicron Variant
Governors across the United States tried to reassure Americans on Sunday that their administrations were closely monitoring the impact of a new coronavirus variant that has alarmed scientists.
Gov. Ned Lamont of Connecticut issued a statement on Sunday reminding his constituents to remain vigilant even though the new variant, known as Omicron, had yet to be detected in the United States.
Given the number of countries where Omicron has already been detected, it may already be present in the U.S., he said in the statement.
Other state leaders took the same tone, urging caution as well as highlighting the measures they had already put in place earlier in the pandemic. Mr. Lamont pointed to the network of labs sequencing genomes in his state and reminded residents to wear masks in indoor public spaces.
Next door in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday. Under her executive order, all state agencies are authorized to take appropriate action to assist local governments and individuals in containing and responding to the coronavirus. Although the measures are a far cry from early pandemic rules, they were the nations first attempt to accelerate preparation for the arrival of the Omicron variant.
We continue to see warning signs of spikes this upcoming winter, and while the new Omicron variant has yet to be detected in New York State, its coming, Ms. Hochul said in a release.

If theres anything I love in the world of print journalism, its the Sunday New York Times. There are so many sections exploding with glorious information waiting to be devoured, from the Magazine to the special fashion inserts. This is precisely why, when I saw a New York Times sale booth a few weeks ago with lovely tote bags being offered for subscribers that I felt that I had to bite. I knew exactly what I wanted the Sunday New York Times.
I told the person selling the subscriptions exactly that. I said that my favorite part of Sunday was reading the Sunday Times and that my favorite part of the Sunday Times had to be the magazine. He said that I could easily accomplish this by getting the Sunday only subscription. I explained that I didnt want to get the Saturday and Sunday subscription because I usually wasnt able to read the Times on Saturday, being busy with Shabbos plans going out for a meal, reading about the weekly Torah portion, that kind of Holy thing that just didnt leave room for finding about the Week in Review.
Nevertheless, it still burns being forced to subscribe to a day I dont want in order to enjoy all of a day that I do want. I say call Saturday Saturday, and call Sunday Sunday dont tell me that Sunday is Sunday when it really is half of Saturday and half of Sunday.

Opposition Candidate Takes A Big Lead In Early Results
The opposition candidate in Hondurass presidential election, Xiomara Castro, held a commanding lead in initial results on Sunday, as she promised to overhaul a state permeated by graft and organized crime.
Ms. Castro, the wife of Manuel Zelaya, a leftist former president deposed in a 2009 coup, led the governments candidate by nearly 20 percentage points with 39 percent of the ballot counted. If elected, Ms. Castro would become the first woman to lead Honduras, as well as the countrys first president to be democratically elected on a socialist platform.
Ms. Castro had 53 percent of the vote, compared with 34 percent for Nasry Asfura, the candidate from the incumbent National Party. That party has refused to concede, telling supporters that their candidate would emerge victorious after all the votes have been counted.
Hondurans flocked to the polls in near-record numbers to decide the successor of the deeply unpopular current president, Juan Orlando Hernández. Mr. Hernándezs presence was palpable at the polls after his government spent the past eight years dismantling the countrys democratic institutions and allowing corruption and organized crime to permeate the highest levels of power.
The final results will most likely take days. The countrys electoral council and electoral observers have urged candidates to avoid declaring victory until all the votes were in.
