Travel Editor Susan Glaser Bests The New York Times And The Boston Globe: Letter From The Editor

Susan Glaser seeks reader input on regional travel. The Plain Dealer

We reorganized the newsroom earlier this year, to more sensibly put groups of reporters with similar duties together, and our life and culture editor got all over me because of one of the changes.

He no longer would be working with travel writer and editor Susan Glaser. He tried every argument he could think of to stop the change.

Susan has that affect on editors. Shes a joy to work with, a reporter who comes up with a dazzling array of interesting stories and writes them with polish. Her new editor, Rich Exner, has told me repeatedly he wishes he could clone her.

Weve long known what a gem we have in Susan, and I suspect our readers have known it, too. What I dont think people realize, however, is just how special she is.

We learned Tuesday that Susan and The Plain Dealer won the gold award for newspaper travel coverage from the Society of American Travel Writers.

The New York Times got silver.

The Boston Globe got bronze.

Think about that. Susan is a one-person operation. She singlehandedly does the reporting, writing and planning of our Sunday Travel section, with our talented design team giving it visual pop. And she beat out huge institutions with teams of people doing what she does alone.

Pros And Cons Of Limoliner

Driving to Boston from New York City

Since LimoLiner is a bus, youre still running the risk of getting stuck in traffic, which is the biggest pet peeve of Boston to New York travel. Since youre paying more than you would on a budget bus, some might not think its worth it.

Personally, if Im comfortable and not on a tight schedule, Id rather pay for the extra amenities so I can get some work done and feel relaxed. Ive paid too much money for flights and delayed trains, only to end up sitting in hour-long traffic from JFK or stuck in a train station because of a mechanical issue. While theres always stress and unpredictability associated with bus and train travel, Ill probably book LimoLiner again the next time Im traveling between NYC and Boston.

LimoLiner also caters to those traveling with children or a pet. Travelers can bring dogs and cats under 25 pounds on for an extra $39, and coloring books and activities are provided for kids.

LimoLiner typically runs seasonal specials, like Spring into the City Sale, which offers a second fare of $59 when you book one ticket through April 20th. Check their schedule here.

Any Suggestions On How To Get From New York To Boston

I dont know which is better to post this on the New York forum or the Massachusetts forum since its an interstate journey. But my situation is Im looking at traveling to Boston again to see family but the flight to Boston is sold out for my travel date so was looking at a flight to New York and then connecting up to Boston by land or air. But I cant wear a mask because of a medical condition and I cant drive. So does anyone have any suggestions as to how to do this or should I just change my date and travel when I can get a direct flight to Boston? Or are there any other airports worth looking into that I havent mentioned above? Thanks for any suggestions.

FWIW , I would be particularly pissed off if I sat next to an unmasked passenger on an eight hour flight across the pond. I’d be curious if the unmasked passengers need proof of vaccination or a negative test. While there may be people with legitimate reasons not to mask, there are many more for whom contracting COVID can be a death sentence. If ya can’t wear a mask, maybe you should keep your six feet of distance to respect the rights of others.

Okay, Alex. I made three comments: You selected one — and told me to take a different plane if I don’t like the rules.

Now, kindly comment on whether or not you need to be vaccinated or produce a negative test to sit next to me maskless.
