A Soldiers Play Wins For Best Revival Of A Play

Godspell on Broadway – New York City Theater Shows and Musicals

A Soldiers Play, Charles Fullers Pulitzer Prize-winning 1981 drama about racism in the American military, won the Tony Award for best revival of a play.

The play starred Blair Underwood, an Army captain who investigates the murder of a Black sergeant near an Army base in Louisiana in 1944. The play, which opened in January 2020, received seven Tony nominations, the most of any play revival.

Accepting the award, the plays director Kenny Leon said the names of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, two Black people killed by the police last year, saying, We will never, ever forget you. He went on to speak about the lack of diversity among the most decorated playwrights.

No diss to Shakespeare, no diss to Ibsen, to Chekhov, to Shaw theyre all at the table, Leon said. But the tables got to be bigger.

We need to hear all of the stories, he went on. When we hear all of the stories, we are better.

Earlier in the night, David Alan Grier, who plays the murdered sergeant, won a Tony for best featured actor in a play. After he accepted his award, Grier spoke to reporters about the devastation of the past 18 months and his relief to see Broadway returning.

I lost faith, I gained faith, I lost faith, I gained faith, he said. Finally there was a path forward, and Im just happy for everyone.

Deadline reported earlier this week that A Soldiers Play will get a television adaptation centered on Griers character.

There Were A Lot Of Hugs This Summer When Stage Families Got Back Together

Before the reopenings were the in-person reunions. And hugs. So many hugs.

Somewhere deep inside the Gershwin Theater on Aug. 23 sat a neat array of chairs, six wide by five deep. On those chairs were the cast members of Wicked, masked up and murmuring among themselves. From the front of the room, the musical director, Dan Micciche, commanded their attention for the first rehearsal of the score.

I just couldnt be happier to be here and be with you all and to hear you, Micciche said. Know that I just, his voice dropped to a strained whisper, love you so much.

Gregory Butler, the associate choreographer of Chicago, counted out quick, taut eight counts on Aug. 17 at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. A cluster of dancers followed his every note as they rehearsed the choreography for the shows opening number, All That Jazz.

They are just celebratory, and theyre living through every fiber of their body, to the point where that excitement makes them hit themselves, Butler instructed, slapping his arms for emphasis. Then they have to shake it off. He shimmied as an example.

This summer, in spaces in or near Midtown Manhattan, the casts and crews of Broadway shows were reconvening for the first time, preparing to take the stage after the pandemic-forced closure. We were flies on the wall at several of these meetings, all for shows that are among the first to begin performances on Broadway. With each first, one thing held true: The show would go on.

Broadway Discount Tickets

Joe Allen, a beloved Theater District hangout known for the posters of notorious Broadway flops that line its walls and the stiff drinks atop its bar, reopened with a reduced schedule as the first Broadway shows gingerly returned in August, and added more days this week as more shows followed.

We cant survive without them, Mary Hattman, the general manager at Joe Allen, said of Broadway shows. As they go we go.

Weve been getting progressively busier every day, Hattman said. So Im very hopeful.

Joe Allen, the pubs longtime proprietor, who opened the place in 1965, died in February. He was no longer at his regular spot, but he was very much in some peoples minds.

On one hand I think hed be really proud of us that were plugging away trying to reopen everything, Hattman said. But its hard for him not to be here.

Restaurants in Times Square were hit hard by the pandemic, when tourism sank and Broadway shows closed en masse as New York City was devastated by the coronavirus in March 2020. More than a year later, restaurants are still anxious for an urgently needed recovery, which has been slowed again with the emergence of the Delta variant.

Sardis, a theater-world institution, still had a sign on its door on Tuesday saying it was closed for renovations, so its bartenders and caricature-covered walls remained off limits.

Dear customers, the sign read, we are under renovation until mid to late fall.

What Is The Difference Between Broadway And Off

If youre new to the world of theater, you may wonder what exactly the difference between Broadway and Off-Broadway is. Broadway is New Yorks official theater district. In order to qualify as a Broadway theater, the theater

  • needs to be located between 40th and 54th St. and between 6th and 8th Ave and
  • its capacity must exceed 500 seats. Theaters with lower capacities are considered Off-Broadway. You could, therefore, say that Off-Broadway shows are typically smaller. They can be located anywhere throughout the city.

Chita Rivera Returns To The Stage Where She Opened West Side Story 64 Years Ago

Chita Riverarose to stardom as Anita in the original Broadway production of West Side Story, which opened at the Winter Garden Theater on Sept. 26, 1957.

And on Sunday night she will be back on the same stage exactly 64 years later to present the best musical award, she said in an interview.

That blew my mind, Rivera, now 88, said of the timing coincidence. Im in goose pimples right now thinking about it.

When Rivera strides onto the stage Sunday night, she said she will be thinking about the fact that she has been here before.

I have visions of Leonard Bernstein, visions of Jerome Robbins in my head that will never ever leave me, Rivera said, referring to the men who wrote the music for and directed West Side Story years ago. I just hope I dont do cartwheels out there.

In a telephone interview on Friday, Rivera said she had an idea of who would be presenting with her, but would not know anything definitively until Sunday.

More broadly, Rivera said she was thrilled by the idea that the Tonys might help mark Broadways return after a long, pandemic-related closure.

We need the theater so desperately, she said. Were storytellers. And I want everybody to be able to get back to that to that exciting place where you can feel and witness joy.

Tony Awards: Moulin Rouge Takes Top Musical Honors And Slave Play Is Shut Out

NYC Times Square by voogac.deviantart.com on @deviantART ...

Moulin Rouge! The Musical and The Inheritance took home the top prizes at the Tony Awards on Sunday night, in a long-delayed and performance-filled celebration that handily supported the title of CBSs broadcast, Broadways Back! At long last, as the night proved, it certainly is.

The flashy jukebox musical Moulin Rouge! won 10 awards, including best musical and best direction of a musical, as well as a statuette for Aaron Tveit for best leading actor in a musical the only nominee in the category. But none of the three nominated musicals went home empty-handed: Adrienne Warren was named best leading actress for her energy-infused titular performance in Tina The Tina Turner Musical; and Jagged Little Pill won for best book and best featured actress, Lauren Patten.

The Inheritance, a lengthy drama taking place in the wake of the AIDS epidemic, made a somewhat surprising sweep of four major awards, including best play and best direction of a play, as well as best leading actor for Andrew Burnap. And A Soldiers Play won best play revival, a category that this year with no eligible options had no musical equivalent.

The most decorated play of the night, even with no one present to accept, was A Christmas Carol. It received five honors, primarily in technical categories, and was awarded original score the first play, in a year without any original musicals nominated, to win the category.

The Musical Six Is Back In Rehearsals And This Time Hopes To Make It To Opening Night

The red velvet seats at the Brooks Atkinson Theater on West 47th Street were covered by tech tables of computers, cables and consoles operated by designers, directors and stage managers. An audience was not due until the first preview on Friday night.

But the anticipation was nevertheless high for a dress rehearsal of Six, the British musical dreamed up by two college students that imagines the wives of Henry VIII as pop stars.

In one of the more poignant examples of the pandemics toll on the theater, the musicals opening night turned out to be its closing night instead: The show had been scheduled to open March 12, 2020, the day Broadway shut down.

Now Six will find out if the loss of 18 months has cost the show any momentum; its original opening had been buoyed by advance sales, multiple productions, a hugely popular soundtrack and fans who had been following the show since its 2017 premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

So there were effusive whoops and cheers from the crew in attendance when the curtain came up on the shows six queens, fully decked out in their sparkly costumes, glittering boots and in some cases crowns.

Were finding ways of readjusting the show to who these performers are now who these queens are at this moment in time, who their 2021 selves are, where these songs are coming from, said Jamie Armitage, who directed the musical with Lucy Moss. Theres a depth and fire to some of the performances which I havent seen before.
