When Is The Best Time To Travel To New York City

The best time to visit New York depends on what you’re looking for, since the city that never sleeps always has something going on. Winters can be brutally cold while summers may be unbearably humid, so spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit for good weather. In spring, you can visit the Brooklyn Botanical Garden to see the blooming cherry blossoms, while in the fall Central Park turns fiery hues of orange and red as the leaves change colors. Visiting while the city is blanketed under snow has its own charm as well if you visit in the winter. And while summers may be hot, it’s a perfect time to hit up one of the nearby beaches.

Tolls From Niagara Falls Ny To New York Ny

A bridge that transforms into a tunnel located in Virginia ...

Hi All,

We are going to driving our rental minivan from Niagara Falls NY to New York City NY this summer. Can you please let me know how much toll can I expect to pay on the fastest route? Google shows the fastest route as using I-90E, I-81S, I-380S, I-80E and I-280E.

Also, the rental car has an option to avail of a toll pass device. They said it is something like you don’t have to wait to pay the tolls on your way, but just pay it all at once to rental agency. It is like an additional $8. Has anyone used something like that? Would it be useful?

Thank you.

Outrageous $17 Toll To Cross The Verrazano Vexes Drivers

  • Read in app

It just may be the most expensive bridge in the country.

The $17 toll to drive across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is more than twice the $7.75 toll to take the far more glamorous Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco. It makes the $15 toll on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia a 20-mile expanse of two bridges, two tunnels, and 12 miles of trestles look like a bargain.

Its completely outrageous, said Nicole Malliotakis, an Assembly Republican whose district encompasses both ends of the bridge in Staten Island and in Brooklyn. When I tell colleagues from other states, they are just shocked that we have a bridge that is so expensive. They ask, Whats on Staten Island? Are they giving away gold on the streets? Or is it some kind of utopia?

The debate over congestion pricing is largely over, but it has focused attention on yet another fraught issue for drivers in and around New York City: pricey bridge tolls. Though most Verrazano travelers pay a discounted E-ZPass rate of $11.52, not the full $17 toll, the bridge has nevertheless emerged as a symbol of the glaring inequities of a transportation system that many see as primarily benefiting Manhattan, while penalizing residents of the other boroughs and the suburbs who drive because they do not have easy access to buses or subways.

Meanwhile, it costs nothing to take the Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges either way across the East River.

How Long Does It Take To Drive

Driving from New York City to Washington, D.C., takes approximately four to six hours, depending on traffic and how many stops you make. This option is ideal for families and those who wish to stop for a meal or a bit of sightseeing.

The driving time is affected by the time you leave. Rush hour traffic in either city tends to be heaviest from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The preferred route of most drivers is I-95 from Washington, D.C., through Maryland and Delaware, and then the New Jersey Turnpike through New Jersey, taking one of the exits between exits 10 through 14, and then entering New York City via a bridge or tunnel.

There are a number of tolls along the way between Washington and New York, including the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, the Delaware Memorial Bridge straddling Delaware and New Jersey, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the bridges to New York City, such as the Goethals and the Verrazano. Expect to pay approximately $37;for tolls one way. You can pay for tolls with cash, although people who do this drive often have an E-Z Pass, which allows for quicker travel through toll plazas. If you have an E-Z Pass from another area you can use that and they will bill you.

How Your Highway Use Tax Is Determined

The tax is based on mileage traveled on New York State public highways and is computed at a rate determined by the weight of the motor vehicle and the method that you choose to report the tax. ;When completing your first return for the calendar year, you must choose to use either the gross weight methodor the unloaded weight method to compute your tax. After you select a method, you:

  • must use the same method to compute your tax for each return filed during the year,
  • cannot change the selected method until the following year, and
  • must use it for all your vehicles.

You should base your method on your particular operations. One method may be more economical or convenient for you. For additional information concerning methods of computing HUT, see Tax Bulletin Howto Determine Your Highway Use Tax .

New Higher Tolls For 2018

At least a half-dozen states from Florida to Colorado are slapping tolls on roads that used to be free or building toll-only lanes this year, and many more are expected to do so next year.

Elsewhere in the country, some states are moving away from the two-tiered charging system.

Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma, for example, all use the same kind of transponder for electronic tolling. We have an interoperability agreement, said Rachel Bell, director of business services and customer relations at the Kansas Turnpike Authority. If you have a transponder from one of those states, you will be charged the same electronic rate as our in-state customers.

But interoperability doesnt always mean simplicity. Take Florida, for example.

The Orlando area has an E-Pass, not to be confused with an E-ZPass, said Brian Hutchings, senior communications specialist for the Central Florida Expressway Authority. ;

If Floridians want to travel on other states E-ZPass highways, you have to get an E-Pass Extra, he said. E-ZPass holders from other states can use that on the Central Florida roads.

You have a lot of snowbirds that come down here, and they had to have two transponders, he said. Now you can have the convenience of multi-state toll paying with one transponder. Discounts are available for some Florida roads with the E-Pass and E-Pass Extra.

However, E-Z Pass does not work on the Florida Turnpike. For that, you have to have a SunPass or other Florida-issued pass, he said.

You’ll Know When You Get There

Sections of I-95 running through northern Virginia and Miami, Florida, offer optional express lanes that charge tolls depending on traffic congestion. Tolls increase or decrease depending on how many cars are using the lanes. Tolls are electronically charged to a Virginia EZ Pass or a Florida Sun Pass. You can see the toll you’ll pay displayed on overhead electronic signs before you get on the expressway.
