Not As Intuitive As It Once Was
The NYT is full of great and varied content, so this review is not about the content, just the app. Theyve made a few updates to the UI in the past few months, each making the app less intuitive. I used to view my history or saved articles a lot when I didnt have time to finish reading a good story. This used to be easily accessible in a side menu. Now its way more hidden, and I have to click a bunch of times to get to it. I can never remember where it is. Also, the back button is now on the bottom of the screen for most articles, except when you view certain articles like through wire cutter. Everytime I want to click back at the top of the screen , its not there. Sometimes there is a back button at the top of the screen when you click on a link through the article. I clicked on this to bring me back to the article, but instead it took me to the front page. And then I couldnt find the article that I was just reading. Frustrating!These are just examples and sound like small, nit-picky things, but when you are constantly trying to figure out where to click, it adds time and makes the app annoying to use. I wish the UI developers prioritized common sense changes rather than just making the app prettier.
New Yorkers See Cost Of Times Rise 50 Cents
The price of The New York Times has gone up by 50 cents.
On New York City newsstands, the Times now costs $2.50 for the Monday through Saturday editions. That’s the same price printed on its newspapers sold across the country.
Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy says the big Sunday newspaper still costs the same: $5 in the New York area and $6 in the rest of the country. And the cost of digital subscriptions remains the same.
The price of home delivery is up by about 4 percent.
It’s the newspaper’s first price increase in more than two years. The Times declines to comment on the reason or on how much revenue it expects will be generated.
The change kicked in on Monday. Home delivery subscribers received a notice about six weeks ago.

There was a time decades aqo when the Sunday NYT was a massive publication, perhaps 5 inches thick folded in half, with special department store advertising magazines, etc. Of course, everything has changed and many of the department stores have disappeared. In this period there was a cartoon of a man emerging from his apartment to pick up his Sunday NYT using a small fork lift truck.
Plenty of newsstands are open 24/7.

The last time I was in NYC, I had a really hard time finding a hard copy of the Times & I was at the Crowne Plaza in Times Square. I ended up downloading it onto my Kindle which cost me less but I prefer reading in hard copy

Putting A Price On News
ON June 1, The Times raised its newsstand price to $2 for the daily paper and $5 or $6 for the Sunday paper, depending on the part of the country where you live. Home delivery prices went up an average of roughly 10 percent. In the last week, the newspaper has trimmed the dimensions of its Sunday magazine and announced that it was eliminating a half page of financial tables and other features in Business Day.
It is a familiar pattern. In the face of a severe recession and a technological revolution luring readers away from print, the price of the ink-on-paper Times keeps going up and some content is reduced or disappears. The losses are as small as a list of companies mentioned in each days paper and as large as whole sections, like Escapes and zoned sections for local news in the New York area.
Times editors say the new Sunday Metropolitan section will still have meaty reporting and that major breaking local news will appear in the front section. Some of the Escapes content moved to the back of the Weekend section.
And the editors urge readers to find missing content like financial data on the papers Web site. But this could drive customers away from the printed newspaper the part of the business that, though declining, generates most of the revenue.
Other announcements are perfunctory, failing to explain the reasons behind the moves. Readers deserve those details. They have shown that they understand the problems The Times faces.
Editorial Stance And Style
The New York Times journalist Alan Feuer said the Daily News focuses heavily on “deep sourcing and doorstep reporting”, providing city-centered “crime reportage and hard-hitting coverage of public issues rather than portraying New York through the partisan divide between liberals and conservatives”. According to Feuer, the paper is known for “speaking to and for the citys working class” and for “its crusades against municipal misconduct”.
The New York Times has described the Daily News‘s editorial stance as “flexibly centrist” with a “high-minded, if populist, legacy”. For over five decades, the News was a staunchly Republican newspaper, in line with its sister publication, the Chicago Tribune, supporting isolationism in the early stages of World War II. By the mid-1970s however, it began shifting its stance, and during the 1990s, it gained a reputation as a moderately liberal alternative to the right-wing Post .
From its founding, it was based at 25 City Hall Place, just north of City Hall, and close to Park Row, the traditional home of the city’s newspaper trade. In 1921 it moved to 23 Park Place, which was in the same neighborhood. The cramped conditions demanded a much larger space for the growing newspaper.
In 1993, the Daily News consolidated its printing facilities near Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.
