New York Day Trips: Blue Hill Farm Tarrytown Ny

Blue Hill Farm is a family-owned and operated institution that is home to a working farm, two restaurants by the same name and a farmers market. Owned by family proprietors Dan, David and Laureen Barber, Blue Hill produces fresh farm produce that is sold at their market and used as ingredients in both of the restaurants in New York City and at Stones Barn in Westchester County.

Blue Hill Market serves as a farmers market where locally sourced, fresh farm produce is sold, including fruit, vegetables, honey, herbs, baked bread, pastries and other sweet treats, and handmade products and gifts for the home. Blue Hill also hosts events at its two restaurant locations, as well as at off-site venues where Blue Hill On the Road brings the farm to your table. If you are asking yourself “Where should I go for a one day trip from NYC?”, this is a great choice.

Visit The 9/11 Memorials At Ground Zero

Once you are back in Manhattan there are some places downtown you can explore.

First up is ground zero. I know this may not be for everyone. I have many Newyorker friends who still find it too painful to go, but the memorial is stunning.

If you are heading this way make sure you stop at St Pauls. The little chapel that stood its the oldest church still standing in Manhattan. It was also the place that became a basecamp for rescue workers after 9/11 where they went to eat and rest. There was a makeshift memorial in there until recently but it has now been moved into the official visitor center.

If you want to go to the 9/11 museum then I would recommend booking as the queues are huge and when we arrived on the days tickets were sold out. You can also book a tour guide to show you around and talk to you about the area.

What You Need To Know About New York

15 marvelous things to do in NYC this weekend

New York City has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Most visitors stay on Manhattan and visit Brooklyn, but few ventures to Staten Island. In this New York itinerary, we will be going to all three boroughs mentioned, and visiting the best places to see if you only have a weekend in New York.

I would recommend staying on Manhattan as thats where most attractions are. Manhattan is nominally divided into Uptown, Midtown, and Downtown, all of which are subdivided into more than 50 neighborhoods, including the Upper East Side, Hells Kitchen, Chinatown, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Harlem, and TriBeCa.

Where To Stay For A Weekend In New York

One of the toughest things about planning a trip to New York is deciding where to stay. Its a massive city comprised of five different boroughs.

For just a weekend in New York, youll definitely want to stay in Manhattan. Where you decide to stay there depends on a lot of factors, namely your budget and interests.

If you want to be near Central Park and the museums, for example, you can look for a place in the Upper East or Upper West Side.

Those who prefer a more central location near landmarks like Times Square can look to Midtown. Want a more hip vibe? Check out SoHo or the Lower East Side.

The great news about NYC is that no matter where you stay, you can get anywhere in the city on the subway. This itinerary moves around Manhattan quite a bit anyway, so it really doesnt matter all that much where your accommodation is.

It can be tough finding accommodation in Manhattan that doesnt break the bank, thats for sure. This definitely isnt the cheapest place for a weekend getaway!

Have a look at our post about how to find free accommodation and have a look at these hotel options to suit all budgets:

Best Accommodations In Town

MOMENTS IN NEW YORK CITY | Experiencing NYC’S energy, pace and liveliness

We personally stayed in two different neighbourhoods TriBeCa and Midtown West and both are great options. TriBeCa feels a little more local, and has good access to the southern tip of Manhattan, while Midtown West is more central located on the west side of the island.

Best Hostel in Manhattan Jazz on Columbus Circle

Staying downtown in Manhattan is always going to be expensive, but if youre in a budget and still want to be in the heart of everything, then the absolute best hostel in town is Jazz on Columbus Circle.

Its a small, boutique hostel and has been renovated to have modern amenities throughout. It has a funky vibe with some awesome decor, and the dorms are small with between 3-6 beds.

Best Mid-Range Hotel Pod 51 Hotel

High-quality accommodation in New York City is not cheap, but the closest balance you can get between affordability and quality is at Pod 51 Hotel.

The rooms are no-frills, but clean, bright and more spacious than you might expect. The location is great, theres fast wifi and an amazing rooftop garden to enjoy.

Best Luxury Hotel in Manhattan Hotel Giraffe by Library Collection

This is it the top of the cream for hotels in New York that you can still get for well under $1000 a night.

See The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is not open to spectators in 2020, but you can watch the parade on broadcast television.

It’s one thing to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade at home on TV, but the spectacle takes on an entirely new dimension when you can watch the vibrant floats, festive marching bands, dance troupes, celebrity guests, and those massive helium balloons pass by in person. Curbside viewing is first come, first served, so be prepared to show up hours early if you want a front-row spot.

The parade typically kicks off at 9 a.m. from Central Park West and West 77th Street and follows a 2.5-mile path that traces Central Park around to 6th Avenue, before making its way down to 34th Street, the site of Macy’s flagship department store.

The pre-Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon inflation is canceled in 2020.

Can’t get enough of those Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons? You can get a sneak peek on the day before Thanksgiving when the balloons are inflated on the Upper West Side. From 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the day before the parade, visitors can watch the balloons take shape near the parade’s starting point around the grounds of the American Museum of Natural History. Many people come out for the event and it’s as much of a beloved annual Thanksgiving tradition in NYC as the parade itself.

Getting To New York By Train/bus

New York is also a major hub for trains. They arrive at Penn Station, which is directly under Madison Square Garden. Amtrak has 14 different routes that travel to NYC so youve got lots of options.

Finally, there are countless companies running buses to New York. Ive taken both the Greyhound and the Megabus in and out of NYC and prefer the latter, especially when booking early as they have some great deals.

How To Get Around New York

The best way to get around New York City is by subway. It may seem confusing when looking at the map, but follow Google Maps directions and youll be fine. If youre in town for more than 24 hours, then purchase a multi-day MetroCard, which will allow you to ride unlimited times for 7 or 30 days.

Taking an Uber or Lyft can be a good alternative to using a yellow taxi. They are completely legal and authorized for use in NYC. You can request Uber cars at any of the major airports, JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark.

Upstate Ny Day Trips: Caves & Mines

Located in Schoharie County, this popular tourist attraction is one of the top spots in the state for caving and spelunking, especially since that the site does not require the equipment or training typically associated with the activity. The cave, which geologists believe formed several million years ago, is composed primarily of limestone from different periods of the Earths early history. While youre there, be sure to also stop by the Cave House Museum of Mining and Geology.

Herkimer Diamond Mines

Visitors to this spot in Herkimer will want to bring safety eye war, gloves and closed toe shoes for exploring the mines, where they might find Herkimer diamonds which are double-terminated quartz crystals and, in some cases, millions of years old. The site also has campgrounds, a museum and a gift shop. Its open from mid-April to late October.

Natural Stone Bridge and Caves

Featuring the largest marble cave entrance in the nation, this Pottersville site includes formations that are over a billion years old. The park has more than 14 miles of snowshoe trails during the winter, a rock climbing wall, gemstone mining in the summer, a picnic area, museum and an ice cream stand with a devoted local following.

Comedy Cellar Or Jazz Club

If youd like to spend a little more time in the Village, there is so much more to see. One thing we recommend is laughing until your stomach hurts at Comedy Cellar. Hosting some of the best comedians in the city, if you pick the right date you may even see a comedy great like Chris Rock or Ray Romano. If youd like to chill out before heading home, then a jazz club is the place for you. Our favorite is Village Vanguard. Open since 1935, its definitely one of the greatest jazz clubs youll ever experience. They typically bring in world-class jazz artists, and you are always in for a fantastic performance.

And this is where your awesome weekend in New York City must come to an end.

Unmissable Big City Bustle In One Of The Worlds Greatest Urban Landscapes

American author E.B. White once quipped about this city of eight million inhabitants: “New York provides not only a continuing excitation but also a spectacle that is continuing.” And while he may have said this nearly a century ago, his words still ring true to this day. The City that Never Sleeps is in constant motion yes, even at 3am and while the surface may be always transforming, its heart never really changes. Spend a day seeing the sites in Manhattan and another day wandering the heart of global hipsterism in Brooklyn. There’s no better time to take a bite out of this pulsating metropolis.
