How You Get A Nys Guard License
To become a security guard in the state of New York, you must first obtain a state license.
Before being granted this license, however, applicants must meet certain requirements that have been specified by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services .
To apply for this license, you must attend an approved security guard training program and complete all coursework, tests, and exams.
Qualified applicants will then be granted a NYS security guard license.
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services oversees security guard licensing for the entire state.
It is responsible for implementing policies and procedures to ensure adequate safety in every municipality within the states jurisdiction.
As such, DCJS is tasked with developing training program requirements that define which practices are acceptable for security officers to carry out while on duty.
In addition, it is responsible for designing a uniform licensing process that all applicants must follow before obtaining their license.
The Division of Licensing Services is responsible for issuing security licenses to applicants who meet the DCJS-mandated requirements.
The New York Security Guard Application Process
Application materials can be downloaded from the Board website . Application materials are available in English and in the following languages: Chinese, Haitian/ Creole, Italian, Korean, Russian, and Spanish.
Applicants with yes responses to background questions are required to provide explanation.
The application fee is $36.
Applicants who do have a current New York photo ID or drivers license will need to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles to have photos made. They will bring the inset from their application packet.

Getting A Security Guard License In Nyc
Before you can even begin the process to obtain your NYS security guard license, you should make sure that youre eligible. In New York state, you must be at least 18 years of age, have no serious criminal offense convictions on your record, and be either a U.S. citizen or a legal resident alien with a valid work permit. If you fail to meet any of those requirements, you wont be eligible to become a security guard.

This New York State Certified Firearms Course is for registered security guard who wish to carry a firearm in the course of their duties. It is a comprehensive program, teaching the basic safety rules, fundimentals of shooting, tactical shooting, care and cleaning. Part of the course will cover the proper use of force including deadly physical force. Also covered in weapon handling is shotgun and rifle. To register for this 47 hour program, individuals must have a pistol permit and New York Security Guard License. You will also need to purchase approximately 600 round of ammo . If you do not have a weapon or holster setup, can can arrange for you to use one at no charge. Cost for this program is seven hundred dollars plus ammo. All teaching materials, range time, targets and use of safety equipment is included. All students who successfully complete the shooting qualification and written testing will be awarded a completion certificate at the end of the course.

Hour Annual Firearms Training Course For Armed Security Guards26 Events
This New York State 8 Hour Annual Certified Firearms Training Course will satisfy your yearly firearms qualification requirement for Armed Security Guard. For retired law enforcement officers, this is the only course that they must take on a yearly basis. All other Armed Security Guards must also take the New York State 8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course to complete their yearly training requirements. All individuals who take this course are required to qualify with a minimum of seventy percent on a fifty round shooting course . All participants after listening to the Use of Force lecture and review will take a ten question test with a minimum passing grade of seventy percent . It is required that all participants bring their current N.Y.S. Security License, Pistol Permit, Weapons of Choice, Magazines, Holster and 50 rounds of Ammunition per weapon when they come to class. The cost of this program is one hundred dollars for qualification with two weapons. Each additional weapon is twenty-five dollars
Security Guard Registration Card
8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training – A general introductory course. You must complete this course and submit a copy of the certificate issued to you with your security guard application.
16 Hour On-The-Job Training – A course relevant to the duties of guards, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer. You must complete this training within 90 days of employment as a security guard.
All training must be submitted to the State of New York by an authorized school. Individuals are not permitted to mail or fax course certificates to the Department of State. It is the responsibility of the Training School to submit course completion information to the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Once the Division has received your course completion information, it will be electronically transferred to the Department of State.

Requirements For Private Patrol And Qualifying Agents
To go into business for oneself as a watch, guard, or patrol agency, one must be at least 25 years of age. He or she must have two years of security experience. Experience as a police officer or sheriff is creditable.
The licensing agency will require insurance.
The applicant must provide signatures from five character witnesses.
He or she must pass an examination. The exam is offered approximately once per month the licensing agency publishes an examination schedule twice a year.
If the business is a corporation, there must be a qualifying agent who has met the experience requirement. He or she will take the licensing examination.

To become a registered security guard in New York:
