Can I Go To College For Free In New York

Should College Be Free

How Viral Videos Masked a Louisiana Prep Schools Problems | NYT News

Students may decide that free tuition presents a sensible option for learning, or they might conclude that paying tuition costs strengthens the value of education. Evidence exists to support both sides of this argument.

A college education can open professional doors and increase lifetime income. According to the Social Security Administration, college graduates may earn $1,000,000 more during their lifetimes than high school graduates. This data may lead citizens to answer, “no,” to the question: Should college be free? In this argument, college is an investment that gradually pays for itself. Furthermore, without tuition, schools may not receive enough funding to maintain their departments. Opponents of free college often question if taxpayers would make up this difference. Additionally, certain critics claim that free college might lead to lower academic performance. Currently, students receiving financial aid must maintain a certain GPA and must not fail any courses. If all classes are free, students may have less of an incentive to perform highly.

Whether It’s To Complete A Degree Gain New Knowledge Or Just For Fun Retirees Can Collect Their Books And Get On To School In A Most Inexpensive Way

As a retiree, youre already a bona-fide graduate of the school of hard knocks your decades of full-time employment. Theres still a lot to learn, however, whether your goal is pursuing a second act in your career, lifelong learning to keep your brain sharp;or to finally complete that long sought-after master’s.

Across the country, retirees can take advantage of free college courses for older residents at various public and private institutions. Some programs allow elders as young as 55 to participate.

Most free-tuition programs make older students wait until registration for classes has closed and the add-drop period has ended. In other words, paying students generally get first priority, and youll only be able to enroll on a space-available basis. In most cases, you have to go through the normal admissions process and be accepted at the college or university before you can enroll in individual classes. And while tuition may be waived, you may encounter fees to apply or register or to use labs, campus gyms, or other resources tied to a particular class. Youll also have to pay for books and other course materials.

Many free-for-retirees programs only allow you to audit classes, meaning you wont get college credit. That might be right up your alley, though. Also note that during the pandemic, some colleges may still be doing remote classes. Make sure you’re geared up for remote learning.

Did Republicans Push Back

Where Can New Graduates Afford to Live in New York?

Republican lawmakers took issue with the DREAM Act on Wednesday, questioning why New York is making aid available to those in the country illegally when many citizens are struggling to cover college bills of their own.

Sen. Fred Akshar, R-Endwell, Broome County, called it an “issue of fairness.”

“What we’re seeing today is my colleagues across the aisle roll out the red carpet for illegals, approving costly legislation that rewards them with free college tuition at the expense of hardworking, legal middle-class taxpayers,” he said on the Senate floor.

The measure would “increase costs for New Yorkers,” said Sen. Rob Ortt, R-North Tonawanda, Niagara County.

“When we can take care of every American citizen who is here legally, who has played by the rules and paid into the system, then we can talk about those who are not,” Ortt said on the Senate floor.

In the Senate, all 40 enrolled Democrats voted for the measure. Twenty Republicans voted against it, while three were absent, including Sen. Michael Ranzenhofer, R-Amherst, Erie County, and Minority Leader John Flanagan, R-Suffolk County.;

What The Program Does

Cuomo raised the idea of free college at a January summit with Sen. Bernie Sanders , where the two discussed the mounting costs of tuition: This society should say, Were going to pay for college because you need college to be successful, New York State is going to do something about it. Last week, the program was made official, one of the first of its kind in the nation. Other parts of the country have programs to provide tuition money. For example, San Francisco gives its residents free community college tuition. However, the Excelsior Scholarship program pioneers the idea on a large scale.

The Excelsior Scholarship will be rolled out slowly. Hopefully, that works out any kinks in its complexities. Ideally, Cuomo said, the plan would begin to be offered in the fall of 2017. Other provisions will be added until the program reaches its full status by 2020. Current estimates show that nearly 200,000 New York students would be eligible to attend college for free under the program by that date.

United States Military Academy At West Point

The US Military Academy at West Point, or simply West Point, was founded in 1801, when President Thomas Jefferson planned to establish a training academy to produce career officers who would lead the military. The site would be in West Point, upstate New York, and would occupy the site of a federal military reservation, and the oldest occupied military base in the country. Today, candidates for admission to West Point must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a member of Congress or the U.S. President or Vice President. Students are officers in training and are referred to as cadets.

As with each of the military service academies, tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Cadets receive a stipend of around one thousand dollars per month to pay for uniforms, books, and other requirements for their education. Officers entering military service upon graduation are expected to serve a total of 8 years military service obligation. They can choose their service to be on active duty or in the Reserve Components, in either enlisted or officer status. Most graduates are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army. Approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each year, with about 1,000 cadets reaching graduation. ;
