The New Yorker Hotel was successful in its early years, hosting many famous personalities. In the 1950s, the hotel was sold multiple times, including to Hilton Hotels. By the time Hilton reacquired the New Yorker Hotel in 1967, it had become unprofitable and Hilton closed it in 1972. The Unification Church purchased the building in 1975, and two decades later, elected to convert a portion of the building to use as a hotel again. Since re-opening as a hotel in 1994, the New Yorker Hotel has undergone approximately $100 million in capital improvements, including lobby and room renovations and infrastructure modernization. It has been part of the Wyndham Hotels & Resorts chain since 2014.

The Mystery Of Nikola Teslas Missing Files

After Nikola Tesla was found dead in January 1943 in his hotel room in New York City, representatives of the U.S. governments Office of Alien Property seized many documents relating to the brilliant and prolific 86-year-old inventors work.

It was the height of World War II, and Tesla had claimed to have invented a powerful particle-beam weapon, known as the Death Ray, that could have proved invaluable in the ongoing conflict. So rather than risk Teslas technology falling into the hands of Americas enemies, the government swooped in and took possession of all the property and documents from his room at the New Yorker Hotel.

As Midtown West Changes So Does The New Yorker Hotel

The Art Deco New Yorker Hotel, located at Eighth Avenue and 34th Street, is just two blocks from the neighborhood-changing Hudson Yards megaproject, and it was this multibillion development, along with the extension of the 7 train and Manhattan West, that inspired the hotel’s owners to embark on a full makeover. The Journal reports that the owners, a subsidiary of the Unification Church, signed a new franchise agreement with the Wyndham Worldwide Corp. to upgrade the New Yorker from the budget-minded Ramada brand to a higher-end Wyndham Hotel & Resorts property. About $30 million has already been spent on renovations of the lobby and ballroom, and blocks of commercial space on the 42-story building’s lower 18 floors are being converted into 172 additional hotel rooms. The hotel currently holds 912 rooms, and when all of the changes are complete, that number could jump to 1,500. As leases expire over the next five years, 270,000-square-feet of space will be freed up and turned into guest rooms.

Now, under the Wynham brand, the hotel hopes to recapture some of its original grandness with the current renovations. Even the New Yorker’s iconic sign, which has crowned the building for 75 years, is also getting spiffed up. The sign will be outfitted with color-changing LEDs, and they will be programmed to mirror the lights on the Empire State Building, located three blocks down 34th Street.

The New Yorker Hotel was built atop the site of the former Manufacturers Trust Company Bank, which agreed to the demolition of their building as long as they were given space inside the New Yorker Hotel for their operations. They were also given free rent for fifty years, until 1980. As such, a bank space was built inside the basement and second floor of the New Yorker Hotel. Kinney himself did the schematics to make the bank vault connect to the hotel portion, and the creativity has paid off. The bank vault area will re-open as a bar sometime this year, dubbed The Bar Below. For the renovation into the bar, designers took the doors off the safety deposit box and glued them onto the wall to gain a few feet. The terrazzo floor is partially original to the bank.

Fun fact: Manufacturers Trust Bank was acquired several times, merging into new companies that would eventually become the ubiquitous Chase Bank. The bank space laid fallow for decades after.

Construction And Early Years

The New Yorker Hotel was built by Garment Center developer Mack Kanner. An early ad for the building boasted that the hotel’s “bell boys were ‘as snappy-looking as West Pointers‘” and “that it had a radio in every room with a choice of four stations”. It was a New Yorker bellboy, Johnny Roventini, who served as tobacco company Philip Morris’ pitchman for twenty years, making famous their “Call for Philip Morris” advertising campaign.

In his final years, the inventor Nikola Tesla lived in the hotel’s room 3327 and died there penniless on January 7, 1943.

Theres An Underground Tunnel That Used To Lead To The Subway

Roughly 200 feet beneath the New Yorker Hotel lies a secret: an underground tunnel that connected the establishment to Penn Station Its mostly forgotten, used primarily as storage, but it once enabled guests to go directly from the subway and trains to an elevator and up into the hotel. A porter would greet you at the entrance and take you the rest of your way.

When the hotel opened, the Long Island Railroad was in operation but the Eighth Avenue Subway was not even completed yet. It would open in 1932. An early advertisement states: Your room is only three minutes from your train through your own private entrance to the Pennsylvania and Long Island stations. This entrance also connects with the New York subway system and when the new Eighth Avenue subway is completed in the fall of 1931, there will be subway entrances at the very doors of the hotel. Like all things transit and New York, the opening of the Eighth Avenue subway was delayed a bit.

Kinney emphasizes that its important to note that the tunnels were already present before the New Yorker Hotel was built. In the late 1960s this tunnel below West 34th Street was closed and mostly disappeared from history, with many considering it an urban legend.
