How To Become A Professional Engineer In New York

What Question Would You Ask A Prospective Employer In An Interview

Why Become A Professional Engineer (PE)

Williams: One thing I always ask employers in interviews and I ask it of every single person whos interviewing me, if its onsite and theres not just one person is, Whats more important: the employees, the product or the customers? Theres no real wrong answer, but its a really good indicator of the companys priorities. For example, when I was at Amazon, customers first when I interned at Intuit, it was employees first. It varies from company to company. But the difference is, when youre onsite and asking multiple people, for example, like one round after another, and they all have different answers, then I know that there might be some sort of communication issue or it might be different across teams. Then you need to figure out what kind of team you want to be on. And then I use that question a lot as a metric for figuring out, Is this the kind of team that I want to join?

So I ask about opportunities for growth and open problems that the company has. And Airbnb had a lot of open problems when I joined. It felt like a really good place to develop as a software engineer, and I was right. I definitely learned more in my first year at Airbnb than I learned in my two years at Facebook. So that was a good choice. But at the end of the day, I think whats going to differentiate a really great software engineer in the Bay Area today because software engineers pretty much grow on trees here is the extent to which they have knowledge of different platforms.

Why Become A Professional Engineer

Being licensed as a Professional Engineer is an important distinction and can enhance your career options. Many engineering jobs require a PE license to work as an engineering consultant or senior engineer, testify as an expert witness, conduct patent work, work in public safety, or advertise to provide engineering services. Although you may never need to be registered for âlegalâ reasons, you may find that you need to be a PE to be eligible for engineering management positions.

On the average, PEs make significantly more money than unlicensed engineers. Even if your first job does not require a PE license, you may need it later in your career. In todays economic environment, it pays to be in a position to move to new jobs and compete with others who have a PE license or are on a professional engineering track. It is also highly unlikely that a job requiring a PE license will be outsourced overseas.

Many technical documents submitted to DEC’s Division of Environmental Remediation are required to be certified by a licensed Professional Engineer . Table 1.5 of DER-10 identifies which remedial program documents submitted to DER require a PE certification.

The following are prerequisites related to the qualifications of the certifying PE and their firm, if they are affiliated with one, as required by the New York State Education Law :

  • The PE must be currently licensed and registered to practice engineering in the State of New York – Registered professional engineers of other states who have not received a registration from the New York State Education Department may not submit any PE-certified documents to DEC . Becoming A Professional Engineer

A Professional Engineer is an engineer licensed by a state board of registration to practice engineering. The PE license is the engineering professions highest standard of competence, a symbol of achievement and assurance of quality. The College of Engineering believes that professional registration is an important goal for engineering graduates. Passing the FE Exam is the first step toward that goal. You must complete four steps to become a licensed Professional Engineer:

    • Graduate from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
    • Pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
    • Work as an engineer for four years.
    • Pass the Professional Engineering exam .

NC State engineering programs are accredited by ABET. The College offers a review course, E 490, twice annually on the NC State campus to help prepare graduating seniors for the FE exam.

Engineering experience must be certified by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors .

Continuing Education Activities Accepted By The Board

New York professional engineers must obtain 18 of their PDH from courses and 18 PDH from educational activities. The state clearly distinguishes between the two types of PDH. Independent and self-reported study is never accepted by the state of New York.

For PDH to contribute to the required 18 course hours, students must be able to immediately interact with the instructor. This includes traditional classrooms as well as live webinars. All courses must be relevant to engineering and cannot include topics such as marketing, real estate, or personal financial planning.

The 18 PDH earned through educational activities do not have to be in a live setting. All online classes and webinars must have a testing instrument at the end of the session to determine adequate completion. Qualifying educational activities include:

    • Preparing and teaching an approved course
    • Presenting a technical presentation in an approved subject area sponsored by an approved provider
    • Receiving a patent, which counts as 9 PDH
    • Participating in approved online classes and webinars that are not live

The NYSED allows professional engineers to choose if their ethics credit will contribute to their course or educational activity hours. Both types of PDH must come from state approved sponsors, subject areas, and formats. A comprehensive list of approved sponsors is available on the state education department website.

    What Is A Pe

To a client, it means you’ve got the credentials to earn their trust. To an employer, it signals your ability to take on a higher level of responsibility. Among your colleagues, it demands respect. To yourself, it’s a symbol of pride and measure of your own hard-won achievement.

To become licensed, engineers must complete a four-year college degree, work under a Professional Engineer for at least four years, pass two intensive competency exams and earn a license from their state’s licensure board. Then, to retain their licenses, PEs must continually maintain and improve their skills throughout their careers.

Yet the results are well worth the effort. By combining their specialized skills with their high standards for ethics and quality assurance, PEs help make us healthier, keep us safer and allow all of us to live better lives than ever before.

A century ago, anyone could work as an engineer without proof of competency. In order to protect the public health, safety, and welfare, the first engineering licensure law was enacted in 1907 in Wyoming. Now every state regulates the practice of engineering to ensure public safety by granting only Professional Engineers the authority to sign and seal engineering plans and offer their services to the public.

To use the PE seal, engineers must complete several steps to ensure their competency.

You should not take this exam unless you have taken at least 75% of the courses in your major. Even with this background, you must prepare.
