New York City Cant Rebound Without Broadway And Broadways Road Back Is Uncertain
NEW YORK For months now, Thomas Schumacher’s dining room table has been taken over by a master list of every Broadway show that’s seeking to reopen or schedule an opening night from the established “The Lion King” to the new “Diana: A True Musical Story.” Since the pandemic-related shutdowns, the Disney Theatrical Group president and his colleagues have been working through various scenarios to get New York theater back on its feet.
But a half-year into an ongoing human tragedy and economic calamity that has drained the cultural lifeblood of the city, neither Schumacher who is also chairman of the Broadway League trade group nor anyone else knows for sure when the nations premier performing arts district will start up again. The earliest estimates for some of New Yorks concert halls and theaters to resume are spring 2021 a few new productions, such as The Music Man with Hugh Jackman and Plaza Suite with Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, have announced early spring beginnings on Broadway. Even so, those involved in the planning say privately that it could be autumn 2021 before venues reopen.
Such is the degree of difficulty that while the citys flagship art museums are already reopening, with state- and city-approved controls on capacity and mandates for masks, theaters have no firm restart date.

The Origins Of Broadway Theater
While the English theater industry was well established by the time colonists began venturing to the New World, building settlements was rigorous work with little time for entertainment of this scale. No record of an organized theater production in America is available until 1732. On Dec. 6, 1732, a troupe of actors described as Londoners performed George Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer in what was known as the New Theater, a building owned by the governor, Rip Van Dam. Later, the Nassau Street Theater, also owned by Van Dam, would host productions like Richard III as well as John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, the first musical production to be performed in New York, in 1750. Many of the early New York theaters were little more than wooden houses painted red, and though they would serve their purpose as a venue for stage productions, it would not be until the construction of the Park Theater in 1798 that theater venues in New York would resemble those in England.

Birth Of The Musical And Post
Theatre in New York moved from downtown gradually to midtown Manhattan beginning around 1850, seeking less expensive real estate. At the beginning of the 19th century, the area that now comprises the Theater District was owned by a handful of families and comprised a few farms. In 1836, Mayor Cornelius Lawrence opened 42nd Street and invited Manhattanites to “enjoy the pure clean air.” Close to 60 years later, theatrical entrepreneur Oscar Hammerstein I built the iconic Victoria Theater on West 42nd Street.
Broadway’s first “long-run” musical was a 50-performance hit called The Elves in 1857. In 1870, the heart of Broadway was in Union Square, and by the end of the century, many theatres were near Madison Square. Theatres arrived in the Times Square area in the early 1900s, and the Broadway theatres consolidated there after a large number were built around the square in the 1920s and 1930s. New York runs continued to lag far behind those in London, but Laura Keene‘s “musical burletta” The Seven Sisters shattered previous New York records with a run of 253 performances. It was at a performance by Keene’s troupe of Our American Cousin in Washington, D.C. that Abraham Lincoln was shot.

Gingold Theatrical Group returns to in-person performances with an Off-Broadway revival of Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warrens Profession beginning October 12 at Theatre Row.
Directed by Artistic Director David Staller, the production will officially open October 27 for a limited run through November 20.
The cast is led by Tony winner Karen Ziemba in the title role with Tony nominee Robert Cuccioli , David Lee Huynh , Alvin Keith , Nicole King, and Raphael Nash Thompson . Katya Collazo and Max Roll are the understudies.
“The struggle for equal rights has always been the hot topic for Bernard Shaw. Mrs. Warrens Profession was considered so incendiary in its time that it was banned for years in Britain and, when it finally debuted here in New York City, the entire cast was arrested on opening night. Its not the plot point of prostitution that offended the officials, but the notion that a woman would struggle to create a successful life for herself in spite of the constraints set against her by law and society, and thrive without apology, said GTG Artistic Director Staller in an earlier statement.
The production also has scenic design by Brian Prather, costumes by Asa Benally, lighting by Jamie Roderick, and sound by Frederick Kennedy. April Kline is the production stage manager.

Director: Conor McPherson Why it’s great: Jukebox musicals are typically seen as crowd-pleasing affairs, but that is not Girl from the North Country. Sure, it uses the music of Bob Dylan, but it’s not encouraging any singalongs. Instead, the Irish playwright Conor McPherson, who also directs, uses the folk rock legend’s music to punctuate a tale of sorrow at a boarding house in Depression-era Minnesota. The songs are deep cuts for the most part, though Mare Winningham does deliver a stirring rendition of “Like a Rolling Stone.” It’s a chilly affair with a bleakness that can turn overwhelming.

David Byrne’s American Utopia originally landed on Broadway for a strictly limited engagement at the Hudson Theatre from October 4, 2019.
American Utopia is the seventh solo studio album by celebrated singer-songwriter David Byrne, which was released on March 9, 2018, hitting #3 in the US Billboard charts and featuring the single “Everybody’s Coming to My House.” Since the albums release, Byrne has been touring internationally with a show that NME describes as “the most ambitious and impressive live show of all time.” The production, which blurs the lines “between gig and theatre, poetry and dance,” has now found a home on Broadway in the heart of New York City, offering fans a unique evening at the theatre in celebration of not only American Utopia, but also of Byrnes extensive back catalogue of hits.
He is, of course, perhaps best known for his days as the frontman and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads, who were active from 1975 through 1991 and spawned such hits as Psycho Killer, Life During Wartime, and Once in a Lifetime. To theatre fans, however, Byrne is probably most admired for his work on Here Lies Love a disco opera charting the life of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, that played to great acclaim at New Yorks Public Theater and Londons National Theatre .

There are 41 active Broadway theaters listed by The Broadway League in New York City, as well as nine existing structures that previously hosted Broadway theatre. Beginning with the first large long-term theater in the city, the Park Theatre built in 1798 on Park Row just off Broadway, the definition of what constitutes a Broadway theater has changed multiple times. The current legal definition is based on a 1949 Actors’ Equity agreement with smaller theaters in New York to allow union members to perform, dividing theater spaces in the city into the system of Broadway and Off-Broadway seen today. Current union contracts clearly spell out if a production is “Broadway” or not, but the general rule is that any venue that mostly hosts legitimate theater productions, is generally within Manhattan‘s Theater District, and has a capacity over 500 seats is considered a Broadway theater. Previous to this legal demarcation a Broadway production simply referred to a professional theatrical production performed in a theater in Manhattan, and the theaters that housed them were called Broadway theaters.

To Kill A Mockingbird
Director: Bartlett Sher Why it’s great: Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s seminal novel had a rough journey to Broadway, but it overcame a lawsuit to become one of the biggest hits of the season. Sure, it was snubbed for Best Play at the Tonys, but you should still make time for itthat is, if you can snag a ticket. What’s most fascinating about Sorkin’s take on the material is how he chooses to reframe Atticus Finch’s famous arguments. This isn’t some kind of Go Set a Watchmen revision of the character, but the play takes a skeptical eye to Finch’s axioms about walking around in another person’s shoes, while still allowing for all the speechifying you’d expect from a Sorkin-Jeff Daniels collaboration. Adult actors savvily play the children, Scout, Jem, and Dill, who narrate the action. Their voices are a highlight, as is the expanded role of Calpurnia.
