Bronx Public & Privately Run Parks

The Bronx has a number of New York City Parks, which will be mostly open / back to normal. Here are some highlights.

New York City beaches will re-open for swimming on Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday, May 29, 2021 and remain open through September 7th. The city outdoor pools will reopen on June 26th, while the indoor pools remain closed until further notice.

City playgrounds, golf courses and driving ranges, skate parks and grilling areas have all reopened. Dog runs are open with CoVid recommendations in effect. Basketball, handball, tennis, bocce, and volleyball courts have re-opened, but with CoVid guidelines remaining in effect. Some field and court permit applications are now being reviewed and issued.

All NYC Parks recreation centers and nature centers are closed until further notice. The City’s historic houses are working to safely reintroduce visitors to their museums. Check individual house museum websites for updated hours and visitation information. The Wildlife Conservation Society re-opened its zoos and aquarium to all guests.

New Owners A New Home And A New Name: Years At The Polo Grounds

The original Polo Grounds burned down in 1911 and the Highlanders shared Hilltop Park with the Giants during a two-month renovation period. Later, from 1913 to 1922, the Highlanders shared the Polo Grounds with the Giants. While playing at the Polo Grounds, the name “Highlanders” fell into disuse among the press. In 1913 the team became officially known as the New York Yankees.

By the middle of the decade, Yankees owners Farrell and Devery had become estranged and in need of money. At the start of 1915, they sold the team to Colonel Jacob Ruppert, a brewer, and Captain Tillinghast L’Hommedieu Huston, a contractor-engineer.

Edgar Allan Poe Cottage

Travel back in time to the world of poet Edgar Allan Poe, during a visit to his namesake 19th-century cottage, nestled between Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. Poe spent the last years of his life with his sick wife and mother-in-law at the cottage in the mid-1800s, hoping that the fresh country air would help heal his wife.

This tiny and charming cottage is tucked within Fordham University Rose Hill Campus’s Poe Park and is operated by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Inside, you’ll find reproductions of furniture from Poe’s time, along with some of his personal items. This cottage served as the inspiration for his poem, Annabel Lee.

The Judge’s Chambers At Yankee Stadium

In 2017, team management ordered the creation of a special cheer section within Section 104 for fans of Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, called “the Judge’s Chambers”. They were the second AL team to create a special cheering section, following the Seattle Mariners. The Judge’s Chambers was added in response to his rise as one of the league’s most popular young stars. The section’s 18 seats are given to lucky ticketholders and their families, along with black judicial robes with the team logo on the front and Judge’s 99 jersey number on the back prior to the addition of the section, fans were wearing white wigs and judicial robes to games in support of Judge. Occasionally, community organizations, charities and Little League teams are given precedence when selecting participants. The seats, which are close to his position in right field, are surrounded by mahogany wood to emulate the appearance of the city’s courthouses.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bronx County has a total area of 57 square miles , of which 42 square miles is land and 15 square miles is water.

The Bronx is New York City’s northernmost borough, New York State’s southernmost mainland county and the only part of New York City that is almost entirely situated on the North American mainland. City Island, the 1.5-mile-long island that juts out into the Long Island Sound, is a hidden gem that is a perfect summer day trip destination. Its easily walked from point to point and contains a number of small businesses and quaint homes that make you feel like youre not in New York City anymore.

Native City Islanders refer to themselves as clam diggers, while non-natives are affectionately called mussel suckers. The island was home primarily to oyster harvesters and shipbuilders in the 1800s, and in 1896 residents voted to leave Westchester County and join New York City. During World Wars I and II, the island was a hub for the fabrication of minesweepers and tugboats. The ship-making legacy would eventually lead to the construction of seven Americas Cup-winning yachts, according to cityisland.com.

Move To New York And The Highlanders Years

The team’s new ballpark, Hilltop Park , was constructed in one of Upper Manhattan‘s highest pointsbetween 165th and 168th Streets. The team was named the New York Highlanders. Fans believed the name was chosen because of the team’s elevated location in Upper Manhattan, or as a nod to team president Joseph Gordon’s Scottish-Irish heritage .

Van Cortlandt Park is a beautiful historic 1,146-acre park located in the northwest Bronx in New York City and is the citys third largest park.
