The Truth Is: You Can Still Get Great Service Today If Youre Willing To Pay A Premium
If you want great in-flight service, you can always spring for business class or first class.
With another quick search at Skyscanner, I found that a first-class New York-London return ticket would cost $4,000 on Swiss Air. Again, this is the fare for a holiday trip, departing right before Christmas and returning right after New Years Day. You could get a much better deal if you travel at practically any other time of the year.
Sure, it still wouldnt be the same as flying in the 50s. There wont be any altar or other pieces of furniture that are not bolted to the floor, for example.
But it comes with modern facilities that we take for granted, like in-flight movies and, on some flights, even power sockets and wi-fi. Id choose these things over altars any day.
Either way, the price of a first-class ticket today is still lower than the inflation-adjusted prices of yesteryear. On top of that, now we could make use of frequent flyer miles, which didnt exist until the late 70s.
What Flights Used To Cost In The ‘golden Age’ Of Air Travel
Flying is actually cheaper and better than it’s ever been.
In spite of all our complaints about smaller seats, poor customer service, and the burn of basic economy, when put in the proper historical perspective, air travel is more accessible, affordable, and comfortable than ever.
Just picture yourself booking a roundtrip tourist class flight to Amsterdam for $4,168.55, or paying $12,089.55 for a 30-day flight around the world.
If you value time as money, todays air travel saves you a bundle. And in cash adjusted for inflation, the cost of flying has plummeted.
According to a study by Compass Lexecon, commissioned by Airlines for America, the average flight from L.A. to Boston in 1941 was worth $4,539.24 per person in todays money, and it would have taken 15 hours and 15 minutes with 12 stops along the way. By comparison, a nonstop flight in 2015 would cost $480.89 and take only six hours. Thanks to intensifying low-cost competition, we can find airfares as cheap as $283 today.
But we dont need to go all the way back to the 1940s to see how cheap airfare has become.
Because flying is cheap, many more people fly today in larger planes with more seats onboard. Air travel has evolved from the privilege of a few into a service for many.

First Class By Airline
Most major U.S. airlines offer their own versions of first class. Many of the amenities are similar: more spacious seats, first-priority boarding and free food and drinks, but the specifics vary between airlines.
In addition to the basic first-class perks, here’s what each airline offers its customers who invest in a first class ticket:
Concorde Became A Costly Promotional Plane
In 1989, British Airways had a special deal for its employees on their Concorde flights between New York and London. The fare was $499, or just over $1000 in todays money. Discounts were also available to the traveling public, although not at levels airline employees could access.
But when airlines start discounting their premium product, you know theres trouble on the horizon.
With the demise of the Concorde in 2003, first class suites and Etihads Residence have cornered the glamor end of flying. Like the Concorde, they are not cheap, and even the most modern passenger aircraft is slower than the Concorde. But modern aircraft are far more comfortable to fly in.
Despite this, and despite the high fares, the Concorde retains a glamor few contemporary airborne products can match. Like a pair of too-tight shoes that look great but are hopelessly impractical, there were always people out there who would open their wallets to try on the Concorde, no matter what the cost.

When flying from Chicago, a flight will clock in at less than 2h 30m. From Atlanta, the trip will take about the same time. And from Anaheim/Orange County, expect to be in the air for a little over five hours.
But What About Service
I hear people say all the time that air travel used to be better. Flight attendants were actually nice we had food we had leg room we didnt have to pay extra fees we didnt have to go through strict security screening, etc.
Thanks to the airfare regulations, airlines in the past didnt have to compete in pricing and knew that they would certainly turn a profit. Thats why flying came with the best services. Among them:
- Lounge and observation area.
- Actual tables and wicker chairs.
- Silverware and crystal.
- A portable altar on Sunday flights in case you missed church to get on the plane.
- A vanity table and chair in the lavatory.
- Toiletries you could actually steal from the lavatories, like individually wrapped bar soaps.
So yes, its true that some things used to be better back then. But you also had to pay a high premium to fly.
