Weve already covered the classic New York foods like pizza, bagels, and pastrami sandwich. Now to hot dog! While there are plenty of hot dog carts around the city, theres one place in particular that deserves a detour Grays Papaya.
Anthony Bourdain featured Grays Papaya on his show No Reservations which is reason enough for me to choose this joint over any other. There are two locations in NYC with original one in Upper West Side. Obviously, get a hot dog, but also add a papaya drink to your order. Apparently, the papaya in the name refers to the drink they sell .

Nyc Halal Street Food
Halal Street food is certainly another must eat food in New York. Usually, this consists of chicken or lamb over rice with red sauce or white sauce. Just like the hot dog stands, you will find them by major train stations, around Penn Station, Time Square, Rockefeller Center, the Financial District, and other major attraction areas.

Ive come here a couple of times with some of my Korean students who have all remarked that this place is the real deal.
Located in little Korea on 32nd street, Baekjeong is a goodeats. They have personal BBQ grills at each table and a nifty extractor that comes down to suck up all the smoke from the food cooking on the flames. There is a ton to choose from on the menu and everything is fresh and yummy .
Pro Tip: This restaurant is best enjoyed in large groups, so I would not recommend coming here as a couple because the serving sizes are HUGE and expensive if only split two ways.

Sunny And Annies Deli
Tucked away in Alphabet City, this low-key convenience store/deli is known for creating an epic version of one of NYCs most immortal breakfast sandwichesthe bacon-egg-and-cheese .
And yes, we really do pronounce this all as one word. And, again, yes, you really are forbidden from leaving the tri-state area without ordering at least one of these amazing sammies.
Luckily for you though, you now know that Sunny and Annies Deli is one of the places you must eat in NYC for a classic, bacon egg and cheese.
Also, if you want to be like a REAL New Yorker, you should get it on a roll, not on a bagel like pictured above. #justsayin

My cousin and I recently took a trip across the pond to NYC. Now, if you read this youll know that a LOT of planning went into that trip to make the most of our few days in the big apple. Im going to share with you some of the best places we ate in New York that I would 100% recommend you visit. Especially if its your first time, its easy to get stuck in the tourist traps but these 18 places will take you all over the city, discovering hidden gems and eating some amazing food.

Fusion Food And Other Amazing Imports
The great thing about NYC is that there are so many great chefs and amazing restaurants that are creating authentic food true to their home country. This is a very incomplete list, but basically if it exists, you will find a restaurant serving their food in New York City.
Wafels and Dinges serve up delicious Belgian waffles. Period. Thats all you need to know. Their food truck moves around the city, so check ahead for locations.
Anything from Momofuku
Momofuku is a new New York classic for a reason. This innovative restaurant serves up the best fusion food that might blow your mind. They deliver during lunch time during the work week if youre not having any success getting a restaurant reservation.
My husband told me that it was unforgivable to write this without including takoyaki. In case youve not heard of this specialty food from Osaka, Japan, takoyaki are fried octopus balls. Theyre divine and they can be found at Otafuku. Its basically a kiosk with no seating, however its worth the wait. I love their okonomiyaki too.
New York has great ramen and its been hard to match the level of fantastic Asian food elsewhere in the United States. My go-to place is Totto, a cash-only ramen restaurant in Hells Kitchen.

Burger At The Nomad Bar
The burger at the NoMad Barthe restaurant inside the NoMad Hotel run by the dream team behind Eleven Madison Parkconsistently ranks among the citys best and is a favorite of chefs like Dominique Ansel. The beef patty has plenty of suet and bone marrow, and comes topped with white cheddar and a house-made secret sauce. Wash it down with one of the bars signature cocktails.
Russ And Daughters Iconic Bagels And Lox Sandwiches
Their commitment to quality, craft and discerning palette is what has made Russ and Daughters smoked salmon world-famous. This is perfectly hand sliced, not machine sliced, and each order is made on the spot by a master slicer.
Gaspe Nova Smoked Salmon is cold smoked for a mild flavor with a satiny texture, perfect for any palate.
Gravlax is a Scandinavian specialty salmon cured and coated in a brine of salt, sugar, dill and a few secret ingredients. I loved the flavor of the dill on the delicate slices.
Norwegian Smoked Salmon has a firm texture and great balance of smoke and salt. It is one of the most popular choices and the least expensive usually.
A word of advice, you may go a bit crazy looking at all the fine choices of appetizing toppings for your bagel and although there will likely be plenty of people in line before you, the staff at Russ and Daughters are masters at moving the line quickly, so know your order before you get to the counter. If you are not sure what to order, just ask them for recommendations. They were nice guiding us through the menu and they do take their time to prepare the most perfect thin slices of salmon and a bagel sandwich made to your specifications.
Other Must Eats on the menu include The Whitefish and Baked Salmon Salad, the caviar, fresh pickled herring, and the Super Heebster Sandwich.

Chicken over rice is the ultimate NYC street food! Ok, the second ultimate right after hot dog which is funny because thats how The Halal Guys started as a hot dog cart on the intersection of West 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue by a few guys from Egypt. After opening their original cart in 1990, they quickly realized the demand for halal food from Muslim cab drivers and switched to making rice with chicken and gyro instead.
Twenty eight years later, a single cart turned into a conglomerate of sorts with multiple locations across the country and even abroad. The original cart on 53rd and Sixth Ave still exists and usually has a long line of locals and tourists alike. There are also plenty of copycats around New York now, so if you want to try the real thing, double-check the address of the branch online and look for yellow and red uniform the staff is wearing.
You need to order chicken over rice or lamb over rice, but they say the secret is in the sauce that comes with them. Take both the white and red sauces and mix them in it makes all the difference.

Start off with jumbo lump crabcakes or a roasted marrow bone, then choose among the namesake porterhouse or New York strip or the great prime rib. They do serve wagyu beef, but who needs such excess when the USDA Prime on the menu is so magnificent.

Cronut At Dominique Ansels Bakery
Dominique Ansels Bakery quickly turned from a must-try on the first visit to must-try on every visit to NYC for me. I simply adore the genius of Dominique Ansel and cant wait to try his new creations every time I am back. He has many pastries and desserts that will blow your mind, starting from DKA to madeleines made to order and served piping hot to a milk shot presented in a cookie cup. But the one pastry Ansel is most famous for is cronut, a combination of croissant and donut that changed the baking game and made the world go crazy.
Theres only one flavor of cronut sold at the bakery at any given time, but the flavor changes every month. In the past the bakery offered fig mascarpone cronut, Valrhona chocolate champagne cronut, and even matcha golden pineapple cronut. Id say Chelsea Market in general is a must-visit in NYC for anyone who travels for food, but as I have to choose one dish, Ill go with tacos from Los Tacos No.1. Chelsea Market is an indoor market and dining space located in a building that formerly served as the headquarters for National Biscuit Company. It has dozens of restaurants inside from simple and affordable like Los Tacos No. 1 to high end like Buddakan.
The menu of Los Tacos No.1 is short and sweet with only four varieties of tacos available. But the few options they serve are impeccable. Take it from a person who lived in Austin for two years and is now spoiled for life by Texan tacos. Their adobada and carne asada tacos are worth waiting in line for .

Bagels And Lox At Russ & Daughters
It doesnt get more classic New York than a bagel piled high with cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, onions, and capers. Though there are plenty of bagel shops around the city, Russ & Daughters on East Houston Street is the OG shop opened in 1914, where generations of New Yorkers have gone to buy bagels, premium smoked salmon, knishes, rugelach, and other Jewish specialties. It also has a sit-down restaurant around the corner on Orchard Street and an outpost in the Jewish Museum on the Upper East Side.
