Out-of-state drivers license renewal applications may be sent by mail. However, you must send a self-addressed stamped envelope with the application to have your new license sent to an out-of-state address.
Military personnel wanting to extend a drivers license renewal application may do so by submitting a Military Service Notification form to the DMV. Once received, the NY DMV will extend the license for six months after the applicant has been released from active duty. Military members must then renew their drivers licenses within the first six months of being discharged. Additional paperwork from commanding officers may be required for expired licenses.

If you have received a renewal notice in the mail, you must complete the renewal form. In addition, you must have already passed your vision test.
If your approved vision registry provider has not submitted the form electronically to the DMV, you must complete the Vision Test Report and mail this along with your renewal notice. Lastly, include a check or money order for payment of the fee.

There are no age-specific rules for New York drivers who seek to renew their licenses. All drivers must renew every eight years, and can do so:
- online, by following the steps described on the DMV website at “Renew License or ID“
- in person, at one of the DMV offices located throughout the state.
Visiontest: Proof of adequate vision is required at every renewal. Drivers can secure this by either:

Notice for Military Members Stationed in Germany
If you are currently stationed in Germany, please be aware that some states require you to have a valid U.S. driver’s license in addition to your USAREUR license. Read our article for more information.
If you’re stationed outside of New York on active military duty, your license is automatically extended for 6 months after your return to the state or discharge from the service. You can also complete and mail a Notification of Military Service to make sure that your driving record isn’t purged from the DMV systemif your license expires while you’re out of state.
If your NY driver license expires before you’re able to complete and submit your form, you must mail the form and a letter from your commanding officer validating:
- The date you entered military service .
- Your active duty status.
After submitting your form, you may renew your driver license , or submit your NY driver license renewal when you return to New York.

Real Id & Enhanced Id+
Effective 5/2/2023, a federal law goes into effect requiring a new type of identification Real ID for anyone 18 years and older. This new law requires a Real ID compliant ID to:
- Board federally regulated commercial aircraft
- Accessing federal facilities
- Enter nuclear power plants
After 5/2/2023, a Standard License or Non-Driver ID Card will NOT be acceptable to enter the locations noted above. How To Renew Your Drivers License In New York
A NY drivers license renewal application must be completed online, by mail or at your local DMV office. Depending on your eligibility, you may be restricted to renewing your license in person. REAL ID cards are available in New York and may be renewed online or by mail. Restrictions apply.

Renew An Expired Drivers Licence
Find out if youre still eligible to renew your drivers licence online, or if you need to visit a DriveTest or ServiceOntario centre.
You may be eligible to renew online if your drivers licence is expired or cancelled.
We are reinstating renewal requirements for driver, vehicle and carrier products and services that expired on or after March 1, 2020. Most products will continue to remain valid until February 28, 2022. Novice licence holders will have until December 31, 2022 to maintain or upgrade their licence. As a result, licences that would have expired on or after March 1, 2020, are currently eligible to be renewed online.
Also, licences expired less than 1 year as of March 1, 2020, are also currently eligible to be renewed online until February 28, 2022.
If your drivers licence was expired or cancelled for more than 1 year prior to March 1, 2020, you cannot renew online. Instead you must:
- visit a DriveTest centre or book an appointment at ServiceOntario Bay and College
- bring original identification that shows your legal name, date of birth and your signature
- pass any required tests such as vision, written or road tests
- pay a $90 fee, plus the cost for any tests you may have to take
How To Request Inactive Status Online
Your New York State license is good for life, however, you MUST register with us periodically if you wish to practice your profession in New York State. Upon licensure, you received a registration certificate valid for a period of three years . We will mail you an application to renew your registration to practice approximately four months before your registration expires. It is your responsibility to notify this office of any change of address.
If you are not practicing your profession or using your title in New York, you may place your registration in inactive status free of charge. To do so, you must advise us of your decision to register inactive. You can do this online following the steps below or by answering “no” to question 1 on your paper renewal registration form, signing and returning the form with no fee. If you do not inform us of such a decision, you are subject to the customary registration fee for your profession. In the event that you decide to resume practice after an inactive period, you must reregister your license and meet any post-licensure requirements imposed on your profession.

Renew At An Office And Get An Enhanced Or Real Id
You don’t have to get an Enhanced or REAL ID. 2 However, if you have a Standard, you will not be allowed to board a domestic flight starting in May 2023 .

Reduced fee or ‘No Fee’ non-driver IDs
- If you receive Supplemental Security Income and are under age 62, your fee is $6.50.
- If you receive Supplemental Security Income and are age 62 or older, you can get a ‘No Fee’ renewal.

- If you are age 62 or older and don’t receive Supplemental Security Income , your fee is $6.50
