Out-of-state drivers license renewal applications may be sent by mail. However, you must send a self-addressed stamped envelope with the application to have your new license sent to an out-of-state address.

Military personnel wanting to extend a drivers license renewal application may do so by submitting a Military Service Notification form to the DMV. Once received, the NY DMV will extend the license for six months after the applicant has been released from active duty. Renew An Expired Drivers Licence

Find out if youre still eligible to renew your drivers licence online, or if you need to visit a DriveTest or ServiceOntario centre.

You may be eligible to renew online if your drivers licence is expired or cancelled.

We are reinstating renewal requirements for driver, vehicle and carrier products and services that expired on or after March 1, 2020. Most products will continue to remain valid until February 28, 2022. Novice licence holders will have until December 31, 2022 to maintain or upgrade their licence. As a result, licences that would have expired on or after March 1, 2020, are currently eligible to be renewed online.

Also, licences expired less than 1 year as of March 1, 2020, are also currently eligible to be renewed online until February 28, 2022.

If your drivers licence was expired or cancelled for more than 1 year prior to March 1, 2020, you cannot renew online. Instead you must:

• visit a DriveTest centre or book an appointment at ServiceOntario Bay and College
• bring original identification that shows your legal name, date of birth and your signature
• pass any required tests such as vision, written or road tests
• pay a $90 fee, plus the cost for any tests you may have to take

How To Request Inactive Status Online

Your New York State license is good for life, however, you MUST register with us periodically if you wish to practice your profession in New York State. Upon licensure, you received a registration certificate valid for a period of three years . We will mail you an application to renew your registration to practice approximately four months before your registration expires. It is your responsibility to notify this office of any change of address.

If you are not practicing your profession or using your title in New York, you may place your registration in inactive status free of charge. To do so, you must advise us of your decision to register inactive. You can do this online following the steps below or by answering “no” to question 1 on your paper renewal registration form, signing and returning the form with no fee. If you do not inform us of such a decision, you are subject to the customary registration fee for your profession. In the event that you decide to resume practice after an inactive period, you must reregister your license and meet any post-licensure requirements imposed on your profession.
