The city’s public school system includes nine specialized high schools to serve academically and artistically gifted students. The city government pays the Pelham Public Schools to educate a very small, detached section of the Bronx.

The New York City Charter School Center assists the setup of new charter schools. There are approximately 900 additional privately run secular and religious schools in the city.

How Do I Search For A Specific Magazine

Apple News+ doesnt have a traditional search bar on the iPhone or iPad, although youll find a search bar at the top of the sidebar on a Mac. Instead, Apple wants you to browse . On the iPhone and iPad, open the Apple News+ tab and then click on the Browse the Catalog tab along the top and scroll down to the magazine youd like to read. Alternatively, you can press on the topical tabs to the right of the Browse the Catalog tab, which cover everything from Entertainment to Science & Tech.

Theres an easier way to search for specific magazines, but its less intuitive. First, press the Following tab at the bottom of the Apple News interface. Then enter the name of the magazine you want to find in the Channels, Topics, and Stories search bar that appears at the top of the next screen. Once the magazines name pops up , press on the name of the publication to see its latest issues and articles.

Not The First Program To Reduce App Store Fees

Apple currently charges 30% of in-app purchases for the first year of a subscription billed through the App Store, but that take is reduced to 15% if the customer subscribes for a second year.

Last year, Apple introduced the App Store Small Business Program, which enables companies that get less than $1 million in net sales per year from Apple to receive a reduced take rate of 15% as well. That program would be a better fit for publishers who make less than $1 million per year, Apple said.

Apple also has a program for established video providers, such as , that offers the lower 15% take rate if the companies integrate their apps with Siri and other Apple features.

Apple said Wednesday that it was launching the program to support publishers and to ensure its customers have access to quality news sources.

But the announcement comes as Apple’s 30% take from the majority of in-app purchases is under more pressure than ever.

A bipartisan bill currently being debated in Congress would target Apple’s in-app payment system and require the company to allow app developers to use other payment processors that charge less.

A decision in an antitrust trial centering on Apple’s App Store policies is also expected later this year. Epic Games sued Apple in 2019 seeking to avoid its 30% fee on in-app purchases. Netflix and Spotify have removed the ability to subscribe to their services through Apple’s App Store to avoid the 15% to 30% take.

Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity

The New York metropolitan area is home to about 570,000 self-identifying gay and bisexual people, the largest in the United States and one of the world’s largest.Same-sex marriages in New York were legalized on June 24, 2011 and were authorized to take place on July 23, 2011. Charles Kaiser, author of The Gay Metropolis: The Landmark History of Gay Life in America, wrote that in the era after World War II, “New York City became the literal gay metropolis for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from within and without the United States: the place they chose to learn how to live openly, honestly and without shame.”

The annual New York City Pride March traverses southward down Fifth Avenue and ends at Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan the parade rivals the Sao Paulo Gay Pride Parade as the largest pride parade in the world, attracting tens of thousands of participants and millions of sidewalk spectators each June. The annual Queens Pride Parade is held in Jackson Heights and is accompanied by the ensuing Multicultural Parade.

Creating Technological Solutions Transparently

This article suggests that the process of creating technological solutions be made transparent and subject to contribution from many people who would end up as users of the product male, female, young, old, learned, unlearned and all other preferences as we have them. It also underscores the importance of having women on product development teams. This approach is not sure to eliminate all forms of bias, but it is a good way to start in order to appraise the full benefits of technology.

How Many Magazines Are Available On Apple News+

Why is New York City Called âthe Big Appleâ??

At the time of writing, Apple says you can read more than 300 publications with an Apple News+ subscription. If you actually count them out, though, theres only around 250 visible through the Browse the Catalog tabs. Well likely see more appear soon, considering that the app just launched. Also, keep in mind that Apple doesnt include paywalled content from sites like The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post in Browse the Catalog section. Does Technology Have All The Answers

This article from Credit Suisse, tells us that technology does not have all the answers because it has been found to exhibit similar biases, as humans. No one can discredit the impact of technology, but it is not totally free of human input and this is the reason we experience these biases in many areas we have technology holding foot.

Texture was born in a uniquely dumb moment for the news industry the short window of time, circa 2009-11, when people thought the iPad was going to change everything. Tablets, not phones, had publishers attention in that period, much to their later chagrin. Steve Jobs announced the iPad on January 27, 2010, but the magazine industry had been making excited tablet prototypes for some time already heres a Sports Illustrated concept video from 2009:

Heres one from the Swedish media house Bonnier :

And though it took another year to launch, there was Rupert Murdochs The Daily, the iPad-only tabloid newspaper with very big ambitions and a lifespan of less than two years.

If you ever rewatch the documentary Page One: Inside the New York Times , theres an entire section focused on the iPad as journalisms savior, while smartphones get barely a glancing mention.

Why all the publisher hype around tablets? The reasons were many: It would be a do-over of the first round of mobile disruption. That big screen would allow more immersive experiences. Its hard to remember now, but mobile data was slow 3G garbage back then heres a huge PDF-like thing that you can download at home on your wifi wasnt that crazy an idea. And, above all, publishers were already used to producing content formatted into rectangles about the size of a piece of paper. Its what they did!

I was a skeptic of Texture at first because I had tried it out on my iPhone:

What Is Apple News+

Apple News+ is a new subscription-based addition to the existing Apple News app for iOS and macOS. While the free Apple News app largely emphasizes straight news, Apple News+ emphasizes longer-tailed magazine content, although youll also get access to content from sites like The Wall Street Journal and The Los Angeles Times that would normally be behind paywalls.

Some magazines in Apple News+ have nifty features like animated live covers that enhance the magazine-reading experience for the digital age, but a surprising number of magazines on Apple News+ are little more than PDFs.

Apple News Plus Is All About Magazines With A Heavy Dose Of Lifestyle Titles Nothing Against Magazines But Its Supposed To Be Apple News

Go watch the keynote and tell me that non-magazine content doesnt feel shoehorned in. We see zero images of what the digital outlets will actually look like in the app the newspapers get the barest mention. This is Lauren Kerns editors note for Apple News Plus, which is all about the glory of glossy periodicals:

Its just a little odd to see The Wall Street Journal presented as a side dish. Apples marketing presents Plus as having built-in subscriptions to The Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times, but doesnt foreground the fact that youre only getting a curated collection of general interest news from the Journal.

Its actually a little hard to even find L.A. Times and Journal content in Apple News Plus because they dont fit into the magazine UX its dependent on. Tap Browse the Catalog in Plus and you can scroll all day, but youll never find either paper, because theyre not contained in issues. Want to see some Journal stories? Head to the Plus tab, scroll past the nav buttons, past the My Magazines carousel, past the First Look section, past a curated sports section called Keeping Score, and youll see four Journal stories. Tap on one of them, then tap on the logo at the top of the article page, and youre finally at the Journal built-in subscription you paid for.

Not As Intuitive As It Once Was

The NYT is full of great and varied content, so this review is not about the content, just the app. Theyve made a few updates to the UI in the past few months, each making the app less intuitive. I used to view my history or saved articles a lot when I didnt have time to finish reading a good story. This used to be easily accessible in a side menu. Now its way more hidden, and I have to click a bunch of times to get to it. I can never remember where it is. Also, the back button is now on the bottom of the screen for most articles, except when you view certain articles like through wire cutter. Everytime I want to click back at the top of the screen , its not there. Sometimes there is a back button at the top of the screen when you click on a link through the article. I clicked on this to bring me back to the article, but instead it took me to the front page. And then I couldnt find the article that I was just reading. Frustrating! These are just examples and sound like small, nit-picky things, but when you are constantly trying to figure out where to click, it adds time and makes the app annoying to use. I wish the UI developers prioritized common sense changes rather than just making the app prettier.

New York Times Leaves Apple News Over A Lack Of Reader Connection

Apple Watch Review: Can it Free Us From Phones? | The New York Times

The New York Times is pulling itself out from Apple News, citing a need to fight for “readers’ attention and dollars” against not only other news organizations, but also tech companies like Apple.

On Monday, stories from The New York Times stopped appearing as part of the curated Apple News feed. The disagreement also makes The New York Times the first major media company to pull out from Apple News altogether.

In an explanatory piece on its website, the publication claims it has made acquiring more subscribers a key business goal, but that Apple News has provided it “little in the way of direct relationships with readers and little control over the business.” It instead wants to push users to its website and mobile app to gain subscribers and “fund quality journalism.”

“Core to a healthy model between The Times and the platforms is a direct path for sending those readers back into our environments, where we control the presentation of our report, the relationships with our readers, and the nature of our business rules,” wrote COO Meredith Kopit Levien in a memo to NYT employees. “Our relationship with Apple News does not fit within these parameters.”

Acknowledging the existence of the Apple News app’s 125 million users, the NYT offers the view that the advertising revenue it provides is underwhelming, while at the same time complaining that Apple took a 30% cut of subscriptions sold within the app.

Wsj Plans To Stick With Apple News+ Because It Attracts A Different Audience

The Wall Street Journal is planning to continue its partnership with Apple News, according to recent comments by News Corp. CEO Robert Thomson. This comes after the New York Times announced last month that it would leave the Apple News platform over disagreements with Apple.

As noted by the New York Post today, Thomson made these comments during the companys recent quarterly earnings call. Thomson believes that the Apple News+ deal allows the Wall Street Journal to attract new categories of readers that it hopes will transition to a paid direct subscription over time:

That Apple News partnership allows us to focus on that tier of content and bring in a significantly new audience that we would hope to graduate to a paid WSJ subscription over time. And it is a genuinely different audience. Its actually, of late, more women than men. For The Wall Street Journal itself, its more men than women.

The Wall Street Journal has been one of the few major publications to join the Apple News+ subscription service. This allows users to pay Apple directly for a collection of premium news sources and magazines for $10 per month. Other publications such as the Washington Post and New York Times have resisted Apple News+.

New York Times CEO Mark Thompson also remarked in an interview last year that other papers should be hesitant to join Apple News+ for two primary reasons: lost subscriber revenue and giving Apple too much power in the news industry.
