We once feared that the web was killing our brains. Not so. Evidence seems to suggest that instead of destroying our minds, weve revolted. Consumers are demanding that writers respect their intelligence and give them something substantial.
We want something that we can take anywhere during those times between task and location and read.
New Criticism And The Intentional Fallacy
Following Duchamp during the first half of the 20th century, a significant shift to general aesthetic theory took place which attempted to apply aesthetic theory between various forms of art, including the literary arts and the visual arts, to each other. This resulted in the rise of the school and debate concerning the intentional fallacy. At issue was the question of whether the aesthetic intentions of the artist in creating the work of art, whatever its specific form, should be associated with the criticism and evaluation of the final product of the work of art, or, if the work of art should be evaluated on its own merits independent of the intentions of the artist.
In 1946, and published a classic and controversial New Critical essay entitled , in which they argued strongly against the relevance of an , or intended meaning in the analysis of a literary work. A New Yorker Staffer Questions Racial Equality At The Magazine And Becomes The Talk Of The Town
Erin Overbey took on a painstaking research project for herself in 2019. Combing through back issues of the New Yorker, she began tabulating the race and gender of the people who wrote and edited the magazine.
Her conclusions, reached this month: Almost none of the 40,000-plus feature articles and reviews published by the magazine over the decades had been edited by a Black person, and only a tiny fraction of the total were written by Black, Latino and Asian American women not surprising, perhaps, in a magazine whose history stretches to 1925. But in a few narrow categories , she determined that the New Yorkers writers were less diverse over the past 30 years than in earlier decades.
On Twitter, where Overbey posted her findings on Sept. 14 with an introduction of Lets talk about racism!, she alleged that the top editorial ranks of prestigious magazines like the New Yorker resembled member registries at Southern country clubs circa 1950. Her multipart post quickly went viral, eliciting praise from influential writers including Salman Rushdie and Nikole Hannah-Jones. Veteran critic Frank Rich a landmark in American press criticism.
But it wasnt just the research that drew attention it was also the researcher. Overbey has worked at the New Yorker for nearly 27 years, currently as its archives editor, overseeing the vast trove of articles from which her research was drawn.

In About Town, his lively 2000 history of the New Yorker, Ben Yagoda corrals a number of criticisms levelled at the magazine during the Forties. The New York Post slammed its thin, snobbish, skilfully written sketches about people without passion or money troubles. The critic John W. Aldridge accused it of fearing all emotion that cannot be expressed in the whisper of a nuance. The Partisan Review charged that the New Yorker makes it possible to feel intelligent without thinking.

Mike West began working with the Lassen Interagency Hotshot Crew in the summer of 2004, when he was twenty-one years old. On one of his early missions, the crew was dispatched to Arizona, where lightning had ignited fires in the mountain peaks of the Coronado National Forest. The crew members camped more than eighty-five hundred feet above sea level, amid ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, and joined other crews of hotshotsélite firefighters revered for their endurance and skillin battling what became known as the Nuttall Fire. The Lassen crews job was containment. Along a ridge bordering the main fire, they started making what firefighters call a handline, removing trees, roots, and other fuels from a continuous strip of land. Beyond the handline, they ignited their own fires with drip torches, creating areas of blackened ground to starve the main fire. This process, known as backfiring, is one of the core strategies of wildfire suppression.

For any age
Over 10 years ago, my high school English teacher recommended that all of his students get a subscription to The New Yorker. He often xeroxed the fiction pieces for us to read, and was known for saying, If you read this magazine cover to cover each week, youll learn almost everything you need to know about whats going on in the world. Because I thought he was great, I got a subscription, and have never regretted it. For a few years I read only the fiction pieces and the poetry, and gradually moved towards the Talk of the Town, and beyond.
I havent lived in the New York area since high school, but each week when my New Yorker comes I gleefully pick it up and begin reading. First the poems, then the Talk of the Town, and then who knows? I am never disappointed.
