The Bronx GPO is a historic landmark building in the heart of the Bronx, located at 558 Grand Concourse that was designed by Thomas Harlan Ellett for the Office of the Supervising Architect and was built in 1937.

The building occupies a large portion of a very busy neighborhood and has been serving the community as a post office for several decades.

This project included a reconfiguration of the postal service occupancy within several floors of the building. It showcased modifications to the historic stone masonry and aluminum and glass storefront entrances to suit requirements set by NYC Landmarks. Inside, a new entryway was carved out from existing space for postal customers, which had to interface with the architectural language that was established in the existing historic public lobby. The postal service now occupies two floors of the facility spread out over 9,300 sq. ft.

A critical challenge for the design team was how to phase the construction of a completely new retail operation, including bullet-resistant teller workstations, freight elevator, and communicating stair inside the building, without interfering with postal operations, which had to remain fully operational throughout the course of work.

    Use Of Definite Article

The Bronx is referred to with the definite article as “the Bronx” or “The Bronx”, both legally and colloquially. The “county of Bronx” does not take “the” immediately before “Bronx” in formal references, unlike the coextensive “Borough of the Bronx”. The United States Postal Service uses “Bronx, NY” for mailing addresses. The region was apparently named after the Bronx River and first appeared in the “Annexed District of The Bronx” created in 1874 out of part of Westchester County. It was continued in the “Borough of The Bronx”, which included a larger annexation from Westchester County in 1898. The use of the definite article is attributed to the style of referring to rivers. A time-worn story purportedly explaining the use of the definite article in the borough’s name says it stems from the phrase “visiting the Broncks”, referring to the settler’s family.

History of Bronx Borough, City of New York

European colonization of the Bronx began in 1639. The Bronx was originally part of Westchester County, but it was ceded to New York County in two major parts before it became Bronx County. Originally, the area was part of the Lenape‘s Lenapehoking territory inhabited by Siwanoy of the Wappinger Confederacy. Over time, European colonists converted the borough into farmlands.

On January 1, 1898, the consolidated City of New York was born, including the Bronx as one of the five distinct boroughs .

Delivery And Customer Service Operations Bronx Ny

    Background

Delivering high-quality service and providing excellent customer experiences are performance outcome goals the U.S. Postal Service has established to measure corporate strategy success and continuous improvement efforts.

Mail delivery and retail services present challenges in large populous areas, such as the Bronx, where many people live in multi-family buildings and high-rise apartments. Owners or managers of apartment buildings or other multi-unit dwellings are responsible for providing carriers access to buildings and for the purchase, installation, and maintenance of mail receptacles, authorized by Postal Service authorities. Failure to follow policy is sufficient justification for withholding mail delivery and requiring occupants to call for their mail at the local post office or carrier delivery unit.

Mail delivery in the Bronx and other areas in the New York District is accomplished by using two types of routes a foot route and a parcel route. A foot route carrier walks the route and delivers letters, flats, and small packages that fit into their carts. Carriers on dedicated parcel routes supplement multiple foot routes by using vehicles to deliver packages and any other mail that cannot fit into the foot route cart.

This audit responds to concerns raised about mail service at selected offices in the Bronx borough of New York City. Customers complained of long lines, rude retail employees, and misdelivered mail and untimely mail delivery.
