New York City Is In The Path Of Tropical Storm Elsa The Season’s First Major Storm
NEW YORK CITY Tropical Storm Elsa’s path could take it and its wind and rain to New York City, forecasters warn.
Projections show the storm’s center moving past the city Friday between 2 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to the National Hurricane Center.
But the storm’s effects likely will be felt earlier and farther from its center.

Syracuse, N.Y. — As Tropical Storm Elsa makes landfill in Florida today and begins chugging up the East Coast, forecasters are concerned about its potential to cause flooding in water-logged Upstate New York.
The final path of the storm, combined with already saturated ground and a separate storm system arriving from the east, could lead to extensive flooding Thursday and into early Friday. Much remains uncertain, though, including the storms path and its eventual collision with the system moving in from the Great Lakes.
Theres little doubt that the wide arc of Atlantic moisture swirling around the center of the storm will deliver heavy rain, but its not clear just how much and where. Forecasts call for 1 to 3 inches, with the heaviest amounts likely in the Hudson Valley, but bands of rain form and move slowly, more rain could fall in some areas.
Right now, forecasters believe the center of the storm will stay along the coast or just off into the Atlantic Ocean, pulling the heaviest rain Upstate into the lower Hudson Valley and Catskills.
The path is going to go off the mid-Atlantic Coast and up the Jersey coast, toward Nantucket. Thats pretty far to your south and east, said Paul Walker, a meteorologist at Accuweather.
New York state climatologist Mark Wysocki is in the same forecasting camp.

NEW YORK – Fast-moving Tropical Storm Elsa hit the New York City region with torrential rains and high winds as it churned up the East Coast. Maximum sustained winds from the storm peaked near 50 mph as it moved through New York City and Long Island, the National Hurricane Center said in a Friday morning update. The storm then soaked New England as it moved out over the Atlantic Ocean.
Wind speeds had ticked down from overnight readings as high as 78 mph in coastal New Jersey that appeared to be “associated with nearby tornadoes,” the center reported.
“Elsa departs up the New England coast this evening. The wind, flooding rain, and storm surge threat has ended,” the National Weather Service said in a Friday afternoon update. “Rough ocean seas will continue into tonight. Dangerous rip currents are expected into Saturday.”
Heavy rains caused traffic hazards in New York City and nearby suburbs, which were already reeling from a deluge Thursday that flooded roads and at least one subway station. Up to 6 inches of rain was possible in some areas Friday.
Tropical Storm Elsa Heads To Northeast After Leaving Tornadoes In The South

Tropical Storm Elsa is barreling its way toward the Northeastern United States, but not before leaving a trail of destruction behind in the South, CNN reports.
- Several suspected tornadoes popped up in the storms wake in the Southeast, according to CNN. One tornado in Kings Bay, Georgia, left multiple people injured and widespread damage in the area.
- There have been other tornadoes spotted in Florida and Georgia on Wednesday. Officials expressed worry for more tornadoes overnight because the storm was sitting pat in the South.
Now, Elsa makes her way toward the Eastern Seaboard. The storm has already brought torrential rain to North Carolina and South Carolina, according to The New York Times. The storm might even have a confrontation with New York and Massachusetts.

Where Is Tropical Storm Elsa Now
Tropical Storm Elsa is said to be brewing off Florida‘s western coast toward Cedar Key.
Residents have been frantically preparing for the storm as Tampa Bay was under a severe weather warning.
Over 12 million people are under a tropical storm warning across three states after the National Hurricane Center announced that the storm was headed north of Florida’s Gulf Coast on July 7.
The storm is expected to “move across the south-eastern United States through Thursday, July 8,” they said in an update after Elsa wreaked havoc in Cuba and a series of Caribbean islands.
Commercial flights at the Tampa airport were suspended on Wednesday, July 7, amid the storm’s passing, but have since resumed.
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said there is the possibility of flooding and power outages throughout northern Florida.
Curry told CNN that even though “It’s not a hurricane with a direct hit, we don’t want people to get overconfident, be out in their cars and potentially driving into flooding.”
Adding: “You can have downed power lines with wind. There’s a whole lot of possibilities that can happen in these storms.
“This is an opportunity to remind ourselves early in the season that you need to know your evacuation zone.
“You need to have your hurricane kits, your storm kits prepared. If you don’t have it ready … if you don’t know your zone, get ready,” Curry said.

Weather officials in New Jersey said the state saw rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts up to 6 inches. The highest threat came over the I-95 urban corridor along with areas to the south and east.
There were no reports of significant power outages. Seas were 6-9 feet during the storm.

Storm Elsa Hits New York: Heavy Rain Floods Subways And Partially Submerges Cars
Residents of New York have been sharing videos of flooded subways and partially submerged cars, as the remnants of Storm Elsa pass through the city area.
The tropical storm has weakened since it passed over northern Florida, but the National Weather Service has warned that New York city area could see more flooding and heavy rain.

One Dead As Unusual Midwest Storm Brings Hurricane
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Elsa strengthened into the first hurricane of the Atlantic season on Friday as it blew off roofs, snapped trees and destroyed crops in the eastern Caribbean, where officials closed schools, businesses and airports. It appeared headed eventually in the general direction of Florida.
The Category 1 storm is the first hurricane to hit Barbados in more than 60 years, unleashing heavy rains and winds on the island and then on St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which are struggling to recover from recent massive volcanic eruptions.
Elsa was centered about 475 miles east-southeast of Isla Beata in the Dominican Republic and was moving west-northwest at 30 mph. It had maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
That level of sustained wind can blow down a lot of buildings and cause a lot of damage, said St. Vincent Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves. I am pleading with you. Let us not take this hurricane lightly. This is not the time to play the fool.
The long-term forecast track showed it heading toward Florida as a tropical storm by Tuesday morning, but some models would carry it into the Gulf or up the Atlantic Coast.
We are getting a lot of reports of damage, he said.

Flooding In New York As Storm Elsa Expected To Hit

Several subway stations were flooded and major roads were cut in New York on Thursday ahead of the expected arrival of Storm Elsa, which has moved up the US East Coast after lashing Florida with wind and rain.
Between 2 and 4 inches of water fell in a series of thunderstorms over the city and surrounding areas on Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service said, “causing extensive flash flooding in certain places.”
Subway passengers posted video footage on Twitter of flooded platforms at the 157th Street station north of Manhattan.
Commuters could be seen waist-deep in the water, crossing a dark pool to reach the station’s platforms.
“Lines 1 and A have really taken a hit, with a lot of flooding in the stations,” Sarah Feinberg, head of the MTA, New York’s public transport authority, said on Thursday at a press briefing.
Some major roads, including in the Bronx, were temporarily closed, disrupting traffic. New York police tweeted footage of motorists being stranded by the water.
The NWS warned of possible new flooding by Friday morning, with the expected arrival of heavy rains brought by Storm Elsa, which is moving up from Florida.
Despite work to protect the city against flooding since Hurricane Sandy in 2012 — which killed 44 people and paralyzed the American economic capital for days — New York remains very vulnerable to flooding, with such incidents expected to increase because of climate change.

Flash flood watches were in effect for parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut until noon on Friday, as the arrival of Tropical Storm Elsa was expected to deliver heavy rain across the area.
As of 5 a.m. Friday, Elsa was about five miles east of Atlantic City, N.J., and moving northeast at 31 miles per hour toward Delaware Bay, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 50 m.p.h. and was expected to pass over the eastern Mid-Atlantic region later on Friday morning.
Elsa would then move near or over the Northeast later in the day, the center said. Up to four inches of rain was expected in the eastern Mid-Atlantic and parts of New England, with isolated totals of up to six inches, and tornadoes were possible along the Mid-Atlantic coast, it added.
Tropical storm warnings were in effect early Friday along parts of the East Coast as far north as Massachusetts. Elsa was expected to weaken to a post-tropical cyclone by Friday evening.
Even before Elsa arrived in the New York region, heavy rains pounded parts of New York City on Thursday night, flooding some subway stations and major roads.

Wind speeds had ticked down from overnight readings as high as 126 kph in coastal New Jersey that appeared to be associated with nearby tornadoes, the center reported.
The NHC showed a track leading up the US East Coast into the Gulf of Maine with gusty winds expected over portions of Atlantic Canada Friday night and Saturday. Flash flood watches are in effect for more than 40 million people.
Heavy rains were causing potential traffic hazards in New York City and nearby suburbs, which were already reeling from a deluge Thursday that flooded roads and at least one subway station. Up to 15 centimetres of rain was possible in some areas Friday.
The hurricane center said a tornado or two was possible through early afternoon Friday over parts of Long Island and southeastern New England.

Tropical Storm Watches have been upgraded to Tropical Storm Warnings along parts of the East Coast as Elsa treks toward the Northeast.
