Stops On A Road Trip From New York To Florida

We enjoy adding new states to our 50 States Challenge, so we start a road trip plan with looking at a map and thinking about where we want to visit.

There are three ways to go when driving from Rochester to Orlando. You can go towards Pittsburgh, Cleveland, or Hershey.

The drive time will vary between 18 and 19 hours but this is dependent on traffic. The difference is very small in real time.

Depending on where you may want to stop on your drive can help you determine which way to go. Once you decide you will need to decide how much you would like to drive each day and where you would like to stop.

If we are driving a full day we will pack snacks and lunch and then plan an hour stop for dinner at an interesting place.

An hour stop to stretch and eat can recharge everyone, and make it easier to drive a bit longer.

This has gotten easier as our kids have gotten older. When they were younger we needed to plan more bathroom breaks and times to stretch.

Rhinebeck And A Special Hotel

California to New York: A Complete Road Trip

My destination that afternoon was the Village of Rhinebeck, another 20 minutes or so north. In addition to being a pretty Hudson Valley village, Rhinebeck also has 300 sites on the National Register of Historic Places. There are also plenty of historical mansions tucked away outside the town.

In Rhinebeck, I also wanted to see my cousins Ed and Gail, whom I hadnt seen in a while. Thankfully at the last minute, they were able to get me a room at the famous Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn, the oldest Inn in America.

Its a great little hotel where I was soon to join George Washington, Benedict Arnold, Alexander Hamilton, and many others who slept, ate, and drank here. The Inns tavern is the original travelers Inn, the Traphagen Tavern, built in 1704. It still has the original wide plank floor on which the founding fathers walked.

But theres even more history at the Beekman. It was a quarrel in its tavern that precipitated the duel in which Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton. Even the Continental Army gets into the picture one of its regiments drilled on the front lawn in preparation for the American Revolution.

And though he lived just down the road, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was also a regular guest. He concluded each of his four political campaigns for New York Governor and US President with speeches from the front porch.

Best Time To Go On A Road Trip From New York To Orlando

A road trip from New York to Orlando is one you can do all year round.

Traffic will be busier during the summer, the holidays and at the weekends, while the prices of hotel accommodation, and entry to many tourist sites and attractions, will probably be at peak rate then too.

In the winter months, snow may slow you down a bit, especially if you plan to visit some places that can only be accessed via back roads. .

Late spring or early fall might be the optimal times to go, as traffic will not be as heavy, prices should be lower, and queues at various attractions are likely to be far less.

Before you head off on your trip, it is a good idea to get your car fully serviced. Especially your heater and air-con, to ensure you can keep you warm or cool as the weather dictates.

Southampton Beach On Long Island

Distance from NYC: 99 miles

When to visit: In the summertime, when the weather is fine

When someone says the words ‘American beach life,’ there’s a strong chance that you picture buffed and bronzed blondes running along the golden shores of California.

But in actual fact, you don’t have to head to the west coast for a slice of paradise, because a beach just two hours’ drive from NYC has repeatedly been voted one of the best in the country.

With soft white sands and aquamarine sea, and lined by mansions, a visit to Cooper’s Beach, in Southampton, Long Island, is one of the best road trips from New York for sun seeking beach bums.

Pass the day playing frisbee or diving into a good book, then drive back to the city, perhaps stopping for a slap up dinner at Tellers Chophouse, in Islip, which is housed in an old bank.

Parking in Southampton is on a pay-by-the-day basis, but does fill up early so leave New York at the crack of dawn and mentally prepare yourself now for the fact it’ll set you back $50. This is the Hamptons, darling.

Soak Up The History In Washington Dc

Washington D.C. is about a four-hour drive from New York, making it an excellent option for an overnight stay after your first leg of the road trip.

Seeing as you’re passing right through, it would be a shame not to take some time to explore Washington DC on your way down to Orlando.

There’s a super convenient car park right across the road from the CitizenM hotel and you’re 2 blocks away from the National Mall – perfect for stretching your legs and seeing the Capitol, Smithsonian and the Washington Monument.

Best of all, despite maybe having one of the best locations in town, the hotel is pretty reasonably priced and is super easy to find being right by the exit from the interstate meaning you don’t have to navigate the maze of DC’s downtown.

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome In The Beautiful Hudson Valley

ROAD TRIP! Rochester New York to Roanoke!

I was off early the next morning to another famous place in Rhinebeck, the 60+-year-old Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Its Americas first flying museum of antique aircraft and replicas, with the emphasis on flying museum. The founder of the museum, Cole Palen, grew up in the Hudson Valley in the 1930s firmly believing It isnt an airplane if it doesnt fly.

Today the non-profit Rhinebeck Aerodrome Museum continues to collect, restore, exhibit more than 60 aircraft. There are also air shows and biplane rides.

Unfortunately, I got to see neither since the Aerodrome wasnt open since I arrived mid-week. However, one of the mechanic-restorers allowed me to wander around, which in itself was quite interesting. Try to time your arrival for an airshow or a plane ride.
