- A tent. For the best experience, set it up before the trip to make sure you know how to do it when you arrive.
- A sleeping bag or bedroll for each person. You can bring an air mattress with sheets and blankets if you prefer. Mats to cushion the ground provide warmth, too.
- Flashlights, lanterns, and propane fuel are nice to have. You can buy rechargeable LED lanterns: They aren’t the brightest, but they are tent-friendly and can charge your devices in a pinch.
- Pack for rain. Even if you don’t use what you bring, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
- Food. Keep it cold in a cooler and store it in your car to avoid pests.
- Beverages. Milk boxes are perfect since they dont need refrigeration until opened.
- If you dont want to grill for every meal, bring a portable propane stove with fuel, pots and pans, and utensils for cooking.
- Charcoal and matches for the grill.
- Mess kits or paper plates, cups, and plastic silverware.
- Leave the toys and iPads at home. Instead, bring crayons and paper for nature rubbings, binoculars, magnifying glass, card games, glow sticks, beach stuff, a bike, and a fishing pole.

High Point State Park Sussex
Camp at the highest point in the Garden State at the aptly named High Point State Park, in the Skylands region. The park offers cabins and 50 tent sites and is a great spot to kick off a hiking trip with more than 50 miles of groomed trails, including parts of the Appalachian Trail. Caroga Lake State Campground is a gorgeous rustic campground in Gloversville, welcoming tent and RV guests in sites that can accommodate trailers up to 40 feet in length. The charming campground, which takes its name from the former area indigenous village of the same name, was originally developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Amenities include modern showers and restrooms, dump stations, a recycling center, and a small-craft boat launch. Visitors can also make use of the campground’s diversified exercise course, which features 18 independent exercise stations, or its private lifeguarded swimming beach, which is open between mid-June and Labor Day. Delta Lake State Park is a gorgeous 720-acre New York state park, stretching across a peninsula along the shoreline of Oneida County’s beautiful Delta Lake near the town of Western. The Thirty Mile Point Lighthouse at Golden Hill State Park is one of the many Lake Ontario lighthouses in New York.
Its also possible to climb up to the top of the tower to see vast views of Lake Ontario! Youll need to get a lighthouse tour for this and the timings are limited. For example, when I was there, the hours were 12-4pm or 1-4pm.
Also, what is great about staying overnight at Golden Hill State Park is that you can also see the lighthouse light flashing at night! It turns on with a sensor around sunset.
Once again, there isnt a swimming beach at the Golden Hill State Park campground, so Lake Ontario is just for viewing!
