New York City‘s demographics show that it is a large and ethnically diversemetropolis. It is the largest city in the United States with a long history of international immigration. New York City was home to over 8.3 million people in 2019, accounting for over 40% of the population of New York State and a slightly lower percentage of the New York metropolitan area, home to approximately 23.6 million. Over the last decade the city has been growing faster than the region. The New York region continues to be by far the leading metropolitan gateway for legal immigrants admitted into the United States.

Throughout its history, New York City has been a major point of entry for immigrants the term “melting pot” was coined to describe densely populated immigrant neighborhoods on the Lower East Side. New York City Housing Costs

It’s a well-known fact that New York City sports a high cost of living due, in large part, to its notoriously high rent prices. As the city is so large and is divided into boroughs that encompass entire counties, the average rent price for the entire city of New York can be misleading.

Rent prices vary dramatically by borough and even by neighborhood. For example, the average rent price for a one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan is two times the average price of a one-bedroom unit in the Bronx.

That said, its important to choose a borough and neighborhood that is within your budget. To help, heres a look at the average rent prices in New York Citys boroughs, including the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn.

Borough
$3,737 $5,689

Alongside the hard numbers, youll need to consider New York City rent trends. The COVID pandemic has greatly impacted the citys rent rates and generally caused dramatic drops. The city is in the process of recovering from these drops but has not completely rebounded.

The current median rent in New York is $3,805 for a one-bedroom apartment and $5,748 for a two-bedroom. This is a drastic 2.95% drop from rent prices at the same time last year. Although rent prices are increasing, and have been since January, now might be a great time to make your move to NYC and lock in a low rent rate.

If you want to save more by renting with roommates, be sure to do so safely.

Rents Across The Boroughs

If you have a limited budget, you can kiss New York Citys hot spots goodbye. You wont be gazing out over Central Park or walking to Times Square unless you have Olympian calf muscles and marathon-worthy walking shoes.

New York City is divided into five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. Most of the examples below represent individual neighborhoods within the boroughs, particularly within Manhattan and Brooklyn, as they feature the most dramatic price fluctuations. For Staten Island and The Bronx, rents are averages for the borough as a whole.

Rental data for a one-bedroom apartment is compiled primarily from RENTCafé and is in order of ascending rents within each borough.

What Is Cost Of Living

One of most important determinations you need to make before moving to a new city or town is how much it will cost to live there. Cost of living is the amount of money you need to sustain a certain lifestyle in a given place.

Because the price of goods and services varies from one city to the next, calculating the cost of living will determine how affordable it is to live in a certain area. The expenses that factor into cost of living can include housing affordability, transportation expenses, food prices and entertainment costs. Cost of living is also tied to income, as salary levels in a geographic area are measured against these expenses.

New York City Income Tax

New York City has a separate city income tax that residents must pay in addition to the state income tax. The city income tax rates vary from year to year. The tax rate you’ll pay depends on your income level and filing status, and it’s based on your New York State taxable income. There are no city-specific deductions, but some tax credits specifically offset the New York City income tax.

If you work for the city but don’t live there, you must still pay an amount equal to the tax you would have owed if you had lived there. This rule applies to anyone who began employment after Jan. 4, 1973.

New York City Has Great Public Parks

The amount of public parks sprinkled throughout the city is a huge perk of living in the Concrete Jungle.

Obviously Central Park takes the cake, spanning nearly 850 acres, this gem is bigger than the country of Monaco and is the most filmed location in the world.

Its clear that New York City understands the importance public green spaces and acts on that knowledge.

In fact, 22% of the city is dedicated specially for public parks and 99% of New York City residents are a mere 10-minute walk from a park.

I can attest that having access to green spaces makes living in NYC easy because when the city feels overwhelming its not hard to find a little slice of greenery to escape to.

For the most part, New Yorkers dress very well, especially when compared to other US cities.

Now, Im not saying were held to European standards, but close enough.
