David Byrne’s American Utopia originally landed on Broadway for a strictly limited engagement at the Hudson Theatre from October 4, 2019.
American Utopia is the seventh solo studio album by celebrated singer-songwriter David Byrne, which was released on March 9, 2018, hitting #3 in the US Billboard charts and featuring the single “Everybody’s Coming to My House.” Since the albums release, Byrne has been touring internationally with a show that NME describes as “the most ambitious and impressive live show of all time.” The production, which blurs the lines “between gig and theatre, poetry and dance,” has now found a home on Broadway in the heart of New York City, offering fans a unique evening at the theatre in celebration of not only American Utopia, but also of Byrnes extensive back catalogue of hits.
He is, of course, perhaps best known for his days as the frontman and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads, who were active from 1975 through 1991 and spawned such hits as Psycho Killer, Life During Wartime, and Once in a Lifetime. To theatre fans, however, Byrne is probably most admired for his work on Here Lies Love a disco opera charting the life of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, that played to great acclaim at New Yorks Public Theater and Londons National Theatre .

Its official: Broadway is coming back. The 41 storied theaters from Midtown to Lincoln Center have been shuttered since March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Broadway Is Reopening But Not Until September
Even as New York City begins to reopen this summer, Broadway will not resume performances until Sept. 14. Heres why.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo says that most pandemic capacity restrictions will ease in two weeks. Mayor Bill de Blasio says he wants the city to fully reopen on July 1. But Broadway, a beacon for tourists and an engine for the economy, is not quite ready to turn on the stage lights.
Most shows are not planning performances until September or later. But there are signs of life: Mr. Cuomo said Wednesday that Broadway shows would start selling tickets for full-capacity shows with some performances starting Sept. 14.
Why the four-month wait? With as many as eight shows a week to fill, and the tourists who make up an important part of their customer base yet to return, producers need time to advertise and market. They need to reassemble and rehearse casts who have been out of work for more than a year. And they need to sort out and negotiate safety protocols.
Weve never done this before, said Victoria Bailey, executive director of TDF, the nonprofit which oversees the TKTS ticket-selling booth in Times Square. The last time the theater industry opened from a pandemic, Shakespeare was still writing new plays.
About 30 shows are currently planning to begin performances on Broadway before the end of 2021 approximately half starting in September, and the rest spread out across the years final quarter.

Programming Will Also Feature Work By Christyn Budzyna And Jessica Penzias
New York Theatre Barn will host the return of its live and in person New Works Series on Monday, November, 1st, 2021 at 7PM ET at The Cell . The live presentation will feature excerpts from the new musicals From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and HOW TO YOU: A Musical Guide to Black Boyhood as well as a conversation with the writers. The presentation will also be streamed live and there is a streaming ticket price for this option. For the first time ever, the company will provide ASL interpreters for the audience at the Cell and at home.
From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler has a book by Jessica Penzias, music by Adam Ben-David, lyrics by Christyn Budzyna, and direction by Sammi Cannold . The musical adaptation of the beloved classic novel From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg tells the story of 11-year-old Claudia Kincaid and her younger brother Jamie, as they run away from home and hide out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In this theatrical retelling, the art in the museum comes to life, as the siblings set out to unravel a mystery surrounding a stunning statue with rumored ties to Michelangelo. Casting will be announced soon.
During the pandemic, the company moved all of their programming online, producing 44 virtual installments of its award-winning New Works Series, which received support in part by the Innovation & Exploration Fund, a program of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre.

Director: Bartlett Sher Why it’s great: Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s seminal novel had a rough journey to Broadway, but it overcame a lawsuit to become one of the biggest hits of the season. Sure, it was snubbed for Best Play at the Tonys, but you should still make time for itthat is, if you can snag a ticket. What’s most fascinating about Sorkin’s take on the material is how he chooses to reframe Atticus Finch’s famous arguments. This isn’t some kind of Go Set a Watchmen revision of the character, but the play takes a skeptical eye to Finch’s axioms about walking around in another person’s shoes, while still allowing for all the speechifying you’d expect from a Sorkin-Jeff Daniels collaboration. Adult actors savvily play the children, Scout, Jem, and Dill, who narrate the action. Their voices are a highlight, as is the expanded role of Calpurnia.

The Show: Lackawanna Blues
The Premise: Playwright Ruben Santiago-Hudson, 64, stars in the Manhattan Theatre Club revival of his 2001 one-man show about his childhood in 1950s Lackawanna, New York, just outside of Buffalo. You may be familiar with the 2005 HBO movie version of the play, starring S. Epatha Merkerson, 68, as his surrogate mother at a neighborhood boardinghouse she won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a SAG Award for the role.
Why You Should Book a Ticket: Santiago-Hudson will be accompanied onstage by Blues Hall of Fame guitarist and Grammy nominee Junior Mack, 61.
The Details: Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, from Sept. 14
The Show: Six
The Premise: If you can’t get enough of British history and radio-friendly pop singles, you’ll love this concert-style musical, which recasts the six wives of Henry VIII as contemporary pop divas. Catherine of Aragon, for instance, is inspired by Jennifer Lopez, 52, and Beyoncé, while Anne Boleyn draws on the likes of Avril Lavigne and Miley Cyrus.

Early Theatre In New York
New York’s first significant theatre presence arose about 1750 when actor-managers Walter Murray and Thomas Kean established a resident theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street, which held about 280 people. They presented Shakespeare plays and ballad operas such as The Beggar’s Opera. In 1752, William Hallam sent a company of twelve actors from Britain to the colonies with his brother Lewis as their manager. They established a theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia, and opened with The Merchant of Venice and The Anatomist. The company moved to New York in 1753, performing ballad operas and ballad-farces like Damon and Phillida. The Revolutionary War suspended theatre in New York, but thereafter theatre resumed in 1798, the year the 2,000-seat Park Theatre was built on Chatham Street ” rel=”nofollow”> Park Row). The Bowery Theatre opened in 1826, followed by others.
The plays of William Shakespeare were frequently performed on the Broadway stage during the period, most notably by American actor Edwin Booth who was internationally known for his performance as Hamlet. Booth played the role for a famous 100 consecutive performances at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1865 , and would later revive the role at his own Booth’s Theatre . Other renowned Shakespeareans who appeared in New York in this era were Henry Irving, Tommaso Salvini, Fanny Davenport, and Charles Fechter.
