The Times generates about 60 million unique visitors a month. One million of them pay 59 million dont. Thats less than two percent. The rest of the digital audience supplies attention which the Times monetizes through advertising, but then again its those one million paying readers who consume a greater slice of the pageviews, doubling their value. Its the more 1.15 million print payers who are responsible for all the print reader revenue and all the print ad revenue. So we can safely say that the business todays and tomorrows is built on a narrow slice of people who consume Times content in any given month. Thats not a problem its just a realization for all digital news companies. Loyal core readers build the foundation of the new business.

On Sunday, the 1.15 million paying print readers mean that the Times can count more than 2 million total paying customers . Is 3 million an achievable goal at some point? Thats the target that Dow Jones CEO Will Lewis has set for The Wall Street Journal.

During the first six months of the year, the Times brought in $24.1 million in revenue to its standalone subscription products, which includes Cooking, Crossword, and audio products, compared to $15.7 million during the same period last year. .

The newspaper was briefly banned from Malaysia after coming under reported pressure by the Chinese Communist Party.

On 12 April 2021, the Hong Kong printing facility was vandalized during working hours, in the presence of staff members. The attack was filmed by CCTV.

The New York Times Tops 75 Million Subscriptions As Ads Decline

The New York Times set a record for its subscription business in 2020, a year when a pandemic, social unrest and a bitterly contested presidential race made headlines, the company said in an earnings report on Thursday.

After adding 2.3 million digital-only subscriptions in 2020, more than in any previous year, The Times exceeded 7.5 million subscriptions for its digital products and print newspaper, The New York Times Companys fourth-quarter report said.

The largest gains of 2020 occurred during two news-heavy periods. In the quarter that started in April, when a great number of Americans were weeks into a routine of working remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic, the company added 669,000 digital subscriptions. In the fourth quarter, which included Election Day, The Times had an increase of roughly 627,000 digital subscriptions.

In 2020, we reached two key milestones, both of which we expect to be enduring: Digital revenue overtook print for the first time, and digital subscription revenue, long our fastest-growing revenue stream, is also now our largest, Meredith Kopit Levien, the companys chief executive, said in a statement. In October 2019, the fact-checking website Snopes reported that The Epoch Times is closely linked to a large network of Facebook pages and groups called The BL that shares pro-Trump views and conspiracy theories such as QAnon. At that time, The BL had spent at least $510,698 on Facebook advertising. Hundreds of the ads were removed for violations of Facebook’s advertising rules. By December 2019, the BL network of pages had 28 million followers on Facebook in total, according to Snopes. The editor-in-chief of The BL had previously worked as editor-in-chief of The Epoch Times, and several other BL employees were listed as current or former employees of The Epoch Times.The BL is registered in Middletown, New York, to an address that also is registered to Falun Gong’s Sound of Hope Radio Network and is associated with the YouTube series Beyond Science, but Snopes found “the outlet as a whole is literally the English-language edition of Epoch Times Vietnam.” Snopes found that The BL was using more than 300 fake Facebook profiles based in Vietnam and other countries, using names, stock photos and celebrity photos in their profiles to emulate Americans, to administer more than 150 pro-Trump Facebook groups amplifying its content.

The Epoch Times and The BL denied being affiliated with each other, although the latter acknowledged that a “few of our staff” previously worked for The Epoch Times.

NYT Co. fell nearly 3% Wednesday after the newspaper publisher reported its slowest growth in digital subscription sales in more than a year. Wall Street, though, remain bullish on the stock, at least for now.

First-quarter, net income rose 25 % to $41.1 million, or 24 cents per share, compared with $32.9 million, or 20 cents, a year earlier. Revenue jumped nearly 7% to $473 million. Excluding one-time items, the profit was 26 cents. On that basis, Wall Street analysts expected the Times to earn 14 cents on sales of $463.3 million.

As of April 30, the Times had more than 7.8 million paid subscribers for the companys print and online products. The Times added 301,000 net new digital subscriptions in the first quarter. More than half of the online sales 167,000 – were for net new digital news subscriptions.

4. The number of New York Times digital subscribers has been growing steadily since 2014.

Unlike many competitors, The Times has managed to grow its digital subscriber base each quarter for the past seven years. From 799,000 digital subscribers in Q1 2014, the number has gone up to an all-time high of 5.09 million in Q4 2020 an impressive 537% increase.
