Bronx Zoo Celebrates Birth Of Rare Endangered Tree Kangaroo
According to National Geographic, Matschies tree kangaroo is considered endangered species. And there has no other Matschies tree kangaroo been born since 2008.
And now the Bronx Zoo celebrates one of the happiest news ever, the birth of a baby kangaroo. Every cub birth deserves a celebration as there is nothing more adorable than an animal cub but when the species has also been endangered the birth of such animals becomes a celebration for the whole world.
The baby is still in the pouch of his mother as they stay there about 6 weeks. Now the little kangaroo will put his head out of the pouch and sometimes can even come out of it.

If you are spending a few days in New York and you have enough free time I recommend you to visit the Bronx Zoo. Located north of Manhattan, in the Bronx Park, is the largest urban zoo in the United States in which live about 6,000 animals belonging to 700 different species. That is why this visit is one of the things to see and do in New York.
The curious thing about this zoo is that it took advantage of its great extension to rebuild on its grounds the habitats of the animals that inhabit it. This way they were able to reduce the use of cages and mix different species that could coexist to create an environment similar to the one they would have in freedom. Coronavirus: Tiger At Bronx Zoo Tests Positive For Covid
A four-year-old female Malayan tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the coronavirus.
The tiger, named Nadia, is believed to be the first known case of an animal infected with Covid-19 in the US.
The Bronx Zoo, in New York City, says the test result was confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Iowa.
Nadia, along with six other big cats, is thought to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo keeper.
The cats started showing symptoms, including a dry cough, late last month after exposure to the employee, who has not been identified.
“This is the first time that any of us know of anywhere in the world that a person infected the animal and the animal got sick,” Paul Calle, the chief veterinarian at the zoo, told Reuters news agency on Sunday.
There have been isolated instances of pets testing positive for the coronavirus elsewhere in the world, but experts have stressed there is no evidence they can become sick or spread the disease.
Mr Calle said he intends to share the findings with other zoos and institutions researching the transmission of Covid-19.
“We tested the cat out of an abundance of caution and will ensure any knowledge we gain about Covid-19 will contribute to the world’s continuing understanding of this novel coronavirus,” the zoo said in a statement.
Dr Sarah Caddy, Veterinarian and Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, is among experts to respond to the reports.

A World First At The Bronx Zoo
After developing a dry cough in late March, Nadia, a four-year-old Malayan tiger, was tested for the virus on April 2, according to Calle. At that time Nadias sister, two Siberian tigers, and three African lions also had coughs and a loss of appetite. When Nadia started showing symptoms, the veterinary team did a number of diagnostic tests and blood work. Considering whats going on in New York City, we of course did the COVID testing, Calle said. The team took samples at the zoo, after sedating Nadia. They sent the samples for testing to the New York State Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell University and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. It is not the same type of test that health care providers give to people, Calle said, so there is no competition for testing between these very different situations.
The zoo has all eight catsone of which is not showing symptomsunder veterinary care and expects them to recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society statement says. While its becoming clear humans can pass the disease to some animals, there is currently no evidence that animals can spread the novel coronavirus to people, both the USDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say.

As of 2010, the Bronx Zoo is home to more than 4,000 animals of 650 species, many of which are endangered or threatened. Some of its exhibits, such as World of Birds and World of Reptiles, are arranged by taxonomy, while others, such as African Plains and the Wild Asian Monorail, are arranged geographically.
Astor Court
Astor Court is an old section of the zoo that is home to many of the zoo’s original buildings, designed by Heins & LaFarge. While most of the buildings are closed to the public, the former Lion House was reopened as the “Madagascar!” exhibit in 2008, and the Zoo Center still exhibits various species. The highlight of the area is the historic sea lion pool featuring California sea lions. Small aviaries featuring small bird species can be found nearby and white-headed capuchins can be seen behind the old Monkey House.
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Astor Court’s buildings as a city landmark in 2000, after a failed attempt to do so in 1966.
African Plains
Until 2009, the southwestern corner of African Plains was home to the endangered Arabian oryx and blesbok. Due to budget cuts and the unpopularity of the species with visitors, they were phased-out of the collection. This section of the exhibit remains empty. In 2017 they received two baby cheetahs from the San Diego Zoo. Cheetahs are now part of their animal encounter programs. They were replaced by the hyenas.

Happy The Elephant Is Denied Personhood To Stay At Bronx Zoo

NEW YORK, June 14 – Happy the elephant will stay at the Bronx Zoo after New York state’s highest court on Tuesday ruled against an animal rights group that said she deserved some of the same rights as humans and should be freed.
In a 5-2 decision, the Albany-based Court of Appeals said the writ of habeas corpus, which allows people to be released from illegal custody, did not apply to Happy despite claims that the 51-year-old elephant shared many of the same cognitive abilities as humans. read more
“While no one disputes that elephants are intelligent beings deserving of proper care and compassion,” Chief Judge Janet DiFiore wrote, “Happy, as a nonhuman animal, does not have a legally cognizable right to be at liberty under New York law.”

DiFiore also said granting freedom to Happy would have “an enormous destabilizing impact on modern society” and could generate a “flood” of petitions to free animals, perhaps including pets and service animals.
She said it should be up to the legislature to decide whether to grant nonhuman animals the same legal rights as people.
Tuesday’s decision is a defeat for the Nonhuman Rights Project, which began asking New York courts four years ago to release Happy to one of two U.S. elephant sanctuaries.
The group said it would continue pushing for her release.
A spokesperson for the Bronx Zoo did not respond to requests for comment.
First Elephant To Pass Mirror Self
Happy is a female Asian elephant who was born in the wild in 1971. Captured as a baby, probably from Thailand, in the early 1970s, along with six other calves, possibly from the same herd, according to The New York Times, she was imported to the US and sold for $800 to the now defunct Lion Country Safari, Inc. in Laguna Hills, California, which named the calves after the dwarves in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. That same year, Sleepy died, and the corporation relocated Happy, Grumpy, Sneezy, Doc, Dopey, and Bashful to the still operational The Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Florida.
In 2002, the Bronx Zoo euthanized Grumpy after she was attacked by two other elephants held in captivity there. The zoo separated Happy from Patty and Maxine and introduced a younger female Asian elephant named Sammie to be Happys companion.
In 2005, Happy became the first elephant to pass the mirror self-recognition test, considered to be an indicator of self-awareness.
That same year, the Bronx Zoo euthanized Sammie after she suffered kidney failure. Shortly after, the zoo announced it would end its captive elephant program once one or more of the elephants had died: If two die, officials say it would be inhumane to sustain an exhibit with a single elephant.
A Change.org petition calling for an end to Happys solitary confinement has over 1.4 million signatures.

The giraffes were still out when I visited, but they’re an example of an animal that does not acclimate and must be indoors during winter. The U.S. Department of Agriculture warns that its critical for these tall creatures to be entirely warm enough: “One giraffe became hypothermic and died inside a heated, albeit drafty, barn where the upper level of the barn was nearly 70 degrees but the lower area was only 45 degrees.” Likewise, many continue to debate whether elephants should be kept at cold-weather zoos.
These arent the only sensitive souls at The Bronx Zoo. If the staff doesnt keep the temperature of a mole rats cage within five degrees of its comfort zone, it could suffer. Hope Pickney, a zookeeper there, said: We have tons of heating systems for their colonies.
It seems to me that HVAC technicians may be the unsung heroes of zoos. Jim Morley, director of purchasing for The Wildlife Conservation Society of New York, headquartered at The Bronx Zoo, said: One minute an air handler in a public facility requires work, the next minute something needs attention at the elephant shelter building and youve got to remember to stay behind the yellow line so you dont get caught under foot.

Exhibits Closed After The 1990s
World of Darkness
World of Darkness opened in 1969 and was the world’s first major exhibit designed specifically to introduce the public to nocturnal animals such as the Chinese leopard cat , bay duiker, Pallas’s long-tongued bat, spiny mouse, lesser mouse lemur, small spotted genet, lesser spear-nosed bats, spotted skunk, fat-tailed lemursJamaican fruit bat, Mohol bushbaby, cloud rat, Hoffman’s two-toed sloth, rock cavy, pygmy slow loris, short-tailed bats, striped skunk, grey-legged night monkey, sand cat, Rodriguez flying fox, brush-tailed porcupine, broad-snouted caiman, sand boa and . Built by Morris Ketchum Jr. & Associates, the house was built where the zoo’s Rocking Stone Restaurant stood until 1942. The exhibit used red-lights to dimly illuminate the enclosures within the windowless building. Like all nocturnal exhibits, the house ran on a reversed lighting schedule, which simulated night and day at opposite times to allow visitors to view nocturnal animals in a more naturalistic setting. Due to budget cuts and the high cost of running the exhibit, it was closed in 2009.
