Death Of Civil War Photographer Mathew Benjamin Brady

Mathew Benjamin Brady, one of the earliest in American history and best known for his scenes of the American Civil War, dies in New York City on January 15, 1896.

Brady leaves little record of his life before photography. Speaking to the press in the last years of his life, he states that he was born between 1822 and 1824 in Warren County, New York, near Lake George. He is the youngest of three children to Irish immigrant parents, Andrew and Samantha Julia Brady. In official documents before and during the war, however, he claims to have been born in Ireland.

At age 16, Brady moves to Saratoga, New York, where he meets portrait painter William Page and becomes Pages student. In 1839, the two travel to Albany, New York, and then to New York City, where he continues to study painting with Page, and also with Pages former teacher, Samuel F. B. Morse. Morse had met Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre in France in 1839, and returned to the United States to enthusiastically push the new daguerreotype invention of capturing images. At first, Bradys involvement was limited to manufacturing leather cases that hold daguerreotypes. But soon he becomes the center of the New York artistic colony that wishes to study photography. Morse opens a studio and offers classes. Brady is one of the first students.

Following the conflict, a war-weary public loses interest in seeing photos of the war, and Bradys popularity and practice decline drastically.

Omicron Will Hit Its Peak Next Week In New York According To Ceo Of Presbyterian Hospital System

  • The NewYork-Presbyterian hospital system’s CEO predicted on Friday that Omicron will peak next week.
  • Outlining the statewide peak, Steve Corwin noted that ICU cases are lower than last winter’s.
  • “Very rare to see somebody admitted who’s had a booster,” he added.

The CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian predicted on Friday that COVID-19’s Omicron variant will reach its peak in the Empire State next week.

Speaking at a briefing held by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Steve Corwin explained that while cases are still rising, the key indicators he’s seeing throughout the hospital system point to Omicron running out of steam in the near future.

“We think with our modeling that the peak will happen next week,” Corwin said. “We’ve also seen some leveling in the past couple of days, fingers crossed that that represents a plateau.”

Another recent model from a Columbia University epidemiologist showed Omicron peaking nationwide by January 21.

Both Hochul and Corwin urged caution as cases continue to rise in New York as hospital capacity and staffing remain major problems, particularly in parts of Upstate New York.

“We’re about 20% higher than we were last year at this time, but much less in the way of cases in our ICUs and cases requiring ventilators, so we’re very thankful for that,” Corwin said.

Merger With The College Of Physicians And Surgeons

In 1807, with a growing young nation in need of adequately trained physicians, the founded, under separate charter, the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Merely four years later, in 1811, Dr. Samuel Bard, dean of Columbia University Medical School, became president of the college. The year 1814 then saw the merger of Columbia University Medical School into the College of Physicians and Surgeons, a move that was made in an attempt to reverse what then was perceived as a period of decline for the medical school.

Despite this merger, the College of Physicians and Surgeons retained its independence from Columbia and it was only in 1860 that the College of Physicians and Surgeons, at that time occupying buildings across West Fifty-ninth Street from the , after severing its ties to the New York Board of Regents and through agreement between the trustees of the College of Physicians and Surgeons and Columbia, became the official medical school of Columbia University. This new relationship between the college and Columbia was minimal at best, however, with the college retaining independence from Columbia. It was not until 1891 that the College of Physicians and Surgeons would be fully integrated and incorporated into Columbia. In 1886, the Sloane Maternity Hospital, later the , was founded as part of Physicians and Surgeons.

Hospitals Confirm Dire Conditions After Red Cross Declares Blood Crisis

Breaking News Reporter, HuffPost

Health care workers across the country are warning of trauma centers closing, surgeries being delayed and chemotherapy patients having to postpone treatment amid what the American Red Cross is now calling a national blood crisis.

Its impacting every patient population that we take care of, Dr. India Sisler, clinical director of pediatric hematology and oncology at VCU Health System in Virginia, told HuffPost on Thursday of the current shortage that she called the worst shes seen in her 15 years of practice.

Were in a position now where were having to triage patients and only use blood products for patients who have an immediate life-threatening issue, said Sisler, who treats children with cancer and blood disorders. These shortages are putting considerable strain on not just her young patients, Sisler said, but on parents who fear the absolute worst for their children.

If theres a couple of bad traumas that come in, then the blood supplys wiped out and their child who requires transfusions to live may not be able to get blood. So theres a lot of anxiety happening, she said.

The Red Cross, which is said to provide about 40% of the national blood supply, has attributed the current blood decline in donations to COVID-19 disrupting donor turnout, canceling blood drives, creating staffing challenges and causing misinformation about donor eligibility. Winter weather has also been blamed for the drop.

Nurses say the stress level is leading to burnout, causing some nurses to leave.

“We cannot afford to have our nurses leave to other institutions when we have trained them to take care of our patients within this community,” Noemi DeJesus-Aponte, a labor and delivery nurse, said.

In six weeks, a state health care staffing law will go into effect. While the nurses acknowledge it will help with transparency with staffing levels, they say it wont force hospitals to hire more nurses which is what they want.

“We will have a committee with management where we sit down and look unit by unit and come up with a clinical staffing plan. Those plans wont be enforceable under the law until 2023,” Executive Director of the New York State Nurses Association Pat Kane said.

Over the next four weeks, the nurses will rally at different hospitals to continue to call attention to the shortage.

New York-Presbyterian Hospital provided News 4 New York a comment Wednesday morning saying theyre currently navigating unprecedented circumstances because of the pandemic and they want to try to recruit qualified, caring nurses.
