Walter Duranty’s Holodomor Coverage And Pulitzer

SOLO 800 MILES DRIVE CHICAGO TO NEW YORK | VLOG#51

Walter Duranty, who served as its Moscow bureau chief from 1922 through 1936, has been criticized for a series of stories in 1931 on the Soviet Union and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work at that time however, he has been criticized for his denial of widespread famine, most particularly Holodomor, a famine in Soviet Ukraine in the 1930s in which he summarized Russian propaganda, and the Times published, as fact: “Conditions are bad, but there is no famine”.

In 2003, after the Pulitzer Board began a renewed inquiry, the Times hired , professor of Russian history at Columbia University, to review Duranty’s work. Von Hagen found Duranty’s reports to be unbalanced and uncritical, and that they far too often gave voice to Stalinistpropaganda. In comments to the press he stated, “For the sake of The New York Times’ honor, they should take the prize away.”The Ukrainian Weekly covered the efforts to rescind Duranty’s prize. The Times has since made a public statement and the Pulitzer committee has declined to rescind the award twice stating, “…Mr. Duranty’s 1931 work, measured by today’s standards for foreign reporting, falls seriously short. In that regard, the Board’s view is similar to that of The New York Times itself…”.

The Times To Begin Chicago Edition On Friday

The first Chicago edition of The New York Times, with added pages of local and regional news, will be published Friday, The Times announced Thursday, a month after the paper began publishing a similar regional edition in San Francisco.

A new organization, the Chicago News Cooperative, which includes several former Chicago Tribune journalists, will produce two additional pages of coverage, twice a week, for inclusion in copies of The Times distributed in that region.

The editor is James E. OShea, a former managing editor of The Tribune and former editor of The Los Angeles Times. Peter Osnos, the founder of PublicAffairs Books, conceived of the cooperative and is chairman of its advisory board. The cooperative is receiving assistance from WTTW, a public television station, and WBEZ, a public radio station. The Chicago edition is part of a national strategy to win over new readers and advertisers, particularly in markets where the major local papers have contracted. The paper has acknowledged that it is looking into starting editions in other cities Seattle was seriously considered, but not pursued but it has not said which ones are candidates.

The Suburban Retreat: Leanne Sardiga 48

Pin by Penny Frost McGinnis on Chicago

Weve been in the city a long time, raising our daughter and really enjoying our neighborhood in Bucktown. But we wanted to get more outdoor space, be able to ride a bike with her. My role at work adjusted so I wouldnt have to go to the office as much, so being close to it wasnt as much of a driving factor.

Daily horoscope for October 26, 2021 »

But we decided that late last year, before the pandemic and all this. We didnt intend to buy new construction, but there was not a lot on the market. We ended up building a new house in Elmhurst. We signed and within two weeks, we were in the stay-at-home order. It was very nerve-wracking, but construction was still essential in Illinois, and we had a great builder who kept everything on time.

We put our Bucktown house on the market right after Memorial Day, and we were probably more nervous about that in the middle of a pandemic, but it sold without even going on the market. Its a little bittersweet, but we think it was an awesome decision.

I feel really bad because the city is in tough financial shape, and I do not see that getting better any time soon. The tax space is really going to be hit, and thats going to affect services and taxes. We feel very fortunate to have moved to a great suburb and still have access to the city we have a list of restaurants we want to go to next weekend for takeout, and well probably be eating leftovers all week. With the pandemic, it was very stressful, but were glad were here.

Release Reception & Legacy

The New York Times resumed publication along with the Daily News on November 6, 1978, after 88 days of non-production, a new record. The newspapers reached an agreement with the unions representing the pressmen.

Jim Romenesko of Poynter praised the newspaper as the best parody of The New York Times.Jim Dwyer stated that the parody set the modern standard for fake news, and called it a “pitch-perfect replica, spiritually and physically”.

Since the release of Not The New York Times, multiple parodies of the Times and other newspapers have been created. On April 1, 1982, a parody of The Wall Street Journal titled Off The Wall Street Journal, was released, with many of the same writers from Not The New York Times also participating, including Hendra. On November 12, 2008, a spoof of the Times titled New York Times Special Edition was produced and distributed by the activist group The Yes Men. On May 5, 2011, a parody website of the Times, called “The Final Edition”, was launched by Hendra, who facetiously thanked the Times for “being so ridiculously easy to parody”.

The newspaper is available in Columbia University‘s Seymour B. Durst Collection of Historical Manuscripts in the “Documents & Newspapers, 1764-1990” section.

The Musician: Drea Smith 35

HIGHLIGHTS: Chicago Fire vs. New York City FC | April 24, 2015

Im a musician and artist, and I just moved to Los Angeles on Friday. After I went to Columbia College, I lived in L.A. about seven years ago, so I had been planning to make my way back here eventually. I have fibromyalgia, and Chicagos weather affects it, and between that and some work opportunities that presented themselves, it just all added up.

I feel like there is only so far you can go in Chicago for music, especially if you dont make an exact sound or fit a demographic. I can sell out a show in London or Paris, but I only got booked in Chicago good headlining gigs when I didnt live there. I love the community in Chicago, and its a great place to hone a skill. Its where you cook up the idea, but then you gotta take it somewhere else to push it.

Timeline: The allegations against a former Chicago Blackhawks video coach »

Luckily I know people here in L.A., and my cousins assistant had a friend who was looking for a roommate, so I just slid into this really cute apartment in Inglewood for a very nice price. I paid my security deposit and everything from afar. In Chicago, I lived alone, so that was the tradeoff. But thats fine, because, to me, I was thinking if we got locked down again, I dont want to be by myself.

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong took ownership of the Los Angeles Times in style with a full-page note to his readers and his new employees on Sunday.

Soon-Shiong bought the newspaper from its former corporate owners, the Chicago-based Tronc newspaper company. NPR spoke to Soon-Shiong about his ambitions for the newspaper.

“I’ve not gone into this transaction from a financial basis at all. There’s an opportunity to make a major impact on the nation,” Soon-Shiong said. “LA Times is one of the three newspapers that can have a national and international impact.”

The Hometown Bound: Logan And Jenna Rush 29 And 30

Chicago

I grew up in Michigan City, Indiana, and Ive always been in love with it, Jenna Rush said. The beauty of it is that it has that small-town feel, but its right on Lake Michigan. You wake up and walk down to the beach. Its a small beach town where everyone knows each other. A lot of my friends from grade school went out and did their own things, but started to slowly move back here. I grew up wanting to move to Chicago and experience that big-city life in my 20s, so that was the appeal for me, and its also where my career took me.

Weve always known we were going to move out of the city, Logan Rush added. We bought a house last December in Michigan City, but we leased the home because we wanted one more summer in Chicago with all of our friends. We thought wed move, but we werent exactly sure when. Then when the pandemic hit, it was like, We want to move now.

Chicagos Brawny Tabloid The Sun

Chicagos brawny tabloid has entered into a merger agreement with the nonprofit organization behind the public radio show This American Life.

The Chicago Sun-Times, once home to the film critic Roger Ebert and the columnist Mike Royko, and Chicago Public Media, the owner of the citys National Public Radio affiliate, WBEZ, announced on Wednesday that they had signed a nonbinding letter of intent that would allow the organization to acquire the paper. If the deal goes through, the publication that bills itself as Chicagos oldest continuously published newspaper will become part of the nonprofit group.

This would allow us to invest in our people, improve the news products we create and strengthen our digital future, Nykia Wright, the Sun-Times chief executive, said in a statement.

The potential deal stands in contrast with the one reached by The Sun-Timess age-old rival, The Chicago Tribune, whose parent company, Tribune Publishing, was sold this year to the New York hedge fund Alden Global Capital.

The Sun-Times came about with the 1948 merger of The Chicago Sun and The Chicago Daily Times. The tabloid was owned by the extended family of the Chicago department store magnate Marshall Field before it was sold to Rupert Murdoch for $90 million in 1983. Three years later, Mr. Murdoch flipped it to a group of investors for $145 million.

The Dream Job: Tyler Greene 36

My husband got a job at Apple, so that was sort of a dream work place for him. He said yes, so we uprooted our entire existence and moved to San Jose, California, in February.

We had a condo in Edgewater, and we just closed on it finally, like a month ago. We left most of our stuff, and with three or four suitcases, we moved here.

We both spent a little over a decade in Chicago, and our whole network is there. But the winters are the winters, and were sort of over it.

Were not quite sure where we want to eventually land in California, but it feels right here. Although rent is completely absurd its a joke at this point. Our rent is double our Chicago mortgage, so the idea of buying in this area is just actually impossible. Its a real problem you get all these gorgeous trees and beautiful weather and you cant actually buy a house.

The Color Of Law: A Forgotten History Of How Our Government Segregated America

You can also purchase the book at , Barnes & Noble, IndieBound.org, or your local bookseller.

In The Color of Law , Richard Rothstein argues with exacting precision and fascinating insight how segregation in Americathe incessant kind that continues to dog our major cities and has contributed to so much recent social strifeis the byproduct of explicit government policies at the local, state, and federal levels.

Rothstein was a panelist on an EPI webinar, July 9, 2020, discussing his book and Reconstruction 2020: Valuing Black Lives and Economic Opportunities for All. the webinar.

The Color of Law was designated one of ten finalists on the National Book Awards long list for the best nonfiction book of 2017.

    Highlighted media

To scholars and social critics, the racial segregation of our neighborhoods has long been viewed as a manifestation of unscrupulous real estate agents, unethical mortgage lenders, and exclusionary covenants working outside the law. This is what is commonly known as de facto segregation, practices that were the outcome of private activity, not law or explicit public policy. Yet, as Rothstein breaks down in case after case, private activity could not have imposed segregation without explicit government policies designed to ensure the separation of African Americans from whites.
