Magic Hour Rooftop Bar And Lounge

Open for brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11.30am 3pm, this indoor and outdoor rooftop is 18 floors above the city.

Magic Hour has five distinct areas including two outdoor areas: the east side overlooks the the Empire State Building with garden party furnishings.

On the west side its like a carnival with a rotating seating area like an antique carousel. The gallery-like entrance is a little risqué with topiary animals caught in naughty positions!

Youll also find a menu of light bites inspired by the state fair with modern takes on things like curly fries and lobster rolls. Plus an impressive list of decadent and sharable cocktails, along with beer, wine, Champagne, and spirits.

Since opening in 2010, it has been among the toughest reservations in town, packed at lunch, brunch and dinner with diners thrilling over vegetable-driven dishes that look as beautiful as if theyd been assembled by artists featured in the attached ABC Carpet & Home store. The roast-carrot-and-avocado salad is deserving of its cult status, as are jalapeno-topped crab toast and every single vegetable side. Opt for the prix-fixe lunch to coerce yourself into ending with the signature dessert: a salted-caramel ice cream sundae topped with popcorn, candied peanuts, fluffy peaks of whipped cream and bittersweet chocolate sauce. J.G. Melon is an Upper East Side staple that has been serving straightforward food and a gold-medal worthy Bloody Mary for 50 years.

The jukebox, dark wood bar, white-and-green checked table cloths, and cash-only policy feels frozen in time, but what I like about eating here is that its the antithesis of ostentatious, driving home the point that sometimes simple is best.

Must try: Served on a plain bun with pickle chips and thin-sliced red onion as accoutrements, the burgers crusty exterior hides a pool of rosy juices that are released on the first bite and necessitate multiple napkins. Ruffle-cut cottage fries are the obvious side.
