How To See The Waterfalls At Niagara Falls State Park In New York

Jim CheneyDisclosure:

New York is home to many iconic destinations but few illicit the same response from throughout the world as Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls is located approximately 16 miles northwest of downtown Buffalo on the United States/Canadian border. There are viewing areas along both sides of the river, and while the views from the Canadian side tend to be better, Im only going to be covering what you can see from the New York side.

Niagara Falls can be found within Niagara Falls State Park, the oldest state park in America, and there are actually three large waterfalls that are together known as Niagara Falls. The most famous is Horseshoe Falls, which spans the Niagara River from the United States to Canada.

The other two waterfalls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, are both located on the American side of the border and are also on the Niagara River. Between these three waterfalls, islands offer both delineations for each and viewing areas.

While there are many popular attractions on the American side of the border including the Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds, Im only going to cover how you can walk to see the three large waterfalls in Niagara Falls State Park in this article.

Buffalo Airport To Niagara Falls: How Do We Go Best

Niagara Falls from NYC on 05th June.

Can anyone give recommendations how to best go there from Buffalo Airport and for recommendable round trips via bus?

Is there a direct link Buffalo airport < > Niagara Falls?

What is it about that bridge one can walk over to the Canadian side and how does one reach this from Buffalo airport?

So many questions. Thanks you all in advance. M.

There are many shuttles available, in the $30-$40 per person each way, range. Taxis will be approx. $75-$85 each way. By far the best way is to rent a car for the day and drive yourself. You can get a rental for $65-$75 plus gas and parking at the Falls which should total less than $100.

You can easily walk across the Rainbow Bridge to enter Canada and see the views and attractions there

#There are many shuttles available, in the $30-$40 per person each way, range#

Many thanks, do you have any URLs with shuttle companies at hand?

Cheers.

Hi just wondering if there is any advantage to seeing the Falls from the Canadian side as opposed to the US side?

It’s far better on the Canadian side with more to do. I’ve yet to see anyone recommend seeing the falls from the US side as a preference.

ebabe

But I’d need to be able to use a shuttle to/from the Buffalo airport if we didn’t have a car, and would be absolutely dependent on public transportation, which I’ve never done before.

This is our first trip together, and I don’t want to end up making the wrong decision.

–Dee

Where To Stay On The American Side Of Niagara Falls

Pontoon removed from brink of Niagara Falls

The neighborhood in Niagara Falls USA gets sketchy if you get too far from the falls, so dont try to skimp on where you stay. My top vote goes to the Giacomo by Choice Hotels: walking distance to everywhere and a lounge with views of the Niagara river. Generally speaking, if you can easily walk to the waterfalls, your hotel will be in an okay neighborhood. The hotels by the outlet mall are fine, too, though a bit of a drive to the tourist attractions.

In Buffalo, I recommend Hotel Lafayette. Its chic, central, and rooms are large. It can make a good alternative if youre only popping in to the parks for an afternoon. Buffalo is about a thirty-minute commute.

Suggested Itinerary For Niagara Falls

If time is short, heres how Id spend one day in Niagara Falls USA:

  • Head to Goat Island first thing in the morning, before the crowds arrive, and snap just 1-2 pictures without any strangers in your way!
  • Go to Cave of the Winds. You dont want it to sell out before you get a chance!
  • While youre still wet, head to Maid of the Mist. Youll probably spend longer waiting in line than on the boat itself, but its worth it.
  • Finish up at Goat Island and Niagara Falls State Park. If you started your day early, its probably time for a late lunch!
  • After your lunch, drive from the falls area for either the Jetboat Ride or the Whirlpool Rapids hike. I like both, but when times short, youll have to prioritize.
  • Head back toward the falls after dark to see them lit up. Most years also have fireworks, but theyve been cancelled in 2021 until futher notice.

The Canadian Side: Horseshoe Falls

Once youve explored the USA side of Niagara Falls, its time for Horseshoe Falls and I have to say, even though the USA falls was my favourite side to explore, this view does top them all. But then we all knew that, didnt webecause this is the view that weve stared at so many times in 2D and is what prompted us to visit in the first place.

Getting to the Canadian side is a piece of cake PROVIDED YOU HAVE YOUR PASSPORT . Simply pass through the guards on either end of Rainbow Bridge, pay your money, present your passport and youre through. Its then a several minute walk to get to the part of the falls that gives the most front-on view. No directions needed follow the sounds of water and the head towards the mass of people.

I wont lie there can be a significant jostle to get closest to the water and good manners and patience wont always get you where you want to be. And that was late October. However, the scrum is worth it and theres visitors centre right behind you if you need a coffee when youre done.

Table Rock Welcome Centre: Id just about had my fill of visitor centres by the time I crossed to the Canadian side of the falls so Table Rock didnt hold my interest for too long. However, theres a whole range of shops, restaurants and activities if you want to explore. Personally, the crowds were thinner on the USA side so I was pleased Id spent my time at the visitor centre there.
