Maker’s Mark Manhattan Drink Recipe

What Is The Manhattan

Old Fashioned Cocktail | Bourbon Cocktail Recipes | Makers Mark®

The original Manhattan recipe start with the 4 simple ingredients: rye or bourbon, plus you also need sweet vermouth, a few dashes of angostura bitters and, the perfect last ingredient, a maraschino cherry.

I am not a snob about a maraschino cherry in my cocktail, but feel free to use the original Luxardo and also the Hotel Starlino Maraschino Cherries.

What Is Makers 46

According to David Wondrich, for a real Manhattan, you need rye whiskey. For this recipe, well be bending the rules a bit and using Markers Mark 46.

Well be using Makers 46 for this Manhattan recipe. It was the first bourbon from Makers Mark special wood-finishing series. They take Makers Mark and then insert 10 seared virgin French oak staves into the barrel and let it finish for nine weeks. This would be even revolutionary today.

This made Makers 46 the first new expression to be created since Makers Mark and went into production in 1953. The outcome is a bourbon that is bolder and more complex perfect for a Manhattan!

Traditional Version Of The Old Fashioned

Since this is a whiskey blog, well skip all the gin, rum, and brandy nonsense and get straight to the good stuff.

Like a Manhattan, the Old Fashioned is a simple cocktail with three basic ingredients. But dont let the simplicity fool you. Its a classic for a reason!

Youll be mixing whisky, sugar, and bitters all in one glass. And adding ice. Thats really all you need to do. You dont even need a set ratio for this one!

  • Whiskey: Once whiskey was on the old-fashioned table, rye was probably the drink of choice.
  • Sugar: You just need one cube, which is about 1 teaspoon
  • Bitters: Usually added by dashes, youll want enough to saturate your sugar
  • Garnish: Typically a maraschino cherry and an orange peel

Simply drop your sugar into your old fashioned glass. Add a few dashes of bitters, muddle together. Then add two ounces of whiskey and one rock of ice. Stir and serve with a garnish of your choice!

Makers Mark bourbon is an original handmade premium bourbon, made with a mash bill of various grain combinations, including corn, of course, soft red winter wheat, and malted barley. You can visit the distillery which has been designated as a national historic landmark distillery.

Bill Samuels may have created the recipe of the bourbon itself in the 1950s, but it was the marketing brilliance of Bills wife, Margie Samuels, that put Makers Mark on the map. She had downright revolutionary ideas for her time and thought of everything from the name, to the Makers Mark bottle design, to the iconic red-wax topper.

This bottling and dipping line is in its own building where a dedicated team takes the first bottle and dips it once and you can see as the red wax drips and is left to create the signature top.

Each and every label of Makers Mark is individually stamped using a hand-press label maker, using original machine that is as old as the brand itself. The signature S Mark IV is a star for the farm they used to live in, the S for Samuels and the IV for Bill being a fourth-generation distiller. The Master Distiller today is Greg Davis.

The hot Kentucky summers are perfect for barrel condition for storing the 500-pound barrels of Makers Mark. They are the only major bourbon house that hand rotates the barrels. From the top of the rickhouse to the bottom, the smell is divine and has your taste buds eager for that first sip.

    A Cocktail Cherry For Garnish

If youre serious about your Manhattans, go ahead and splurge on great cherries. I love Luxardo cherries. Theyre far superior to other maraschino cherries and last a long time. Readers have pointed out that these cherries are best stored in a dark, cool cupboard rather than the refrigerator, where they tend to crystallize. You can find Luxardo cherries at well-stocked liquor stores and .

Tip: If you want your Manhattan to be on the sweeter side, add a tiny bit of the sweetened cherry liquid from the jar to your mixing glass.

The Old Fashioned is a remarkably simple cocktail which means it can be manipulated and changed in any number of ways. The early versions used gin, rum, or brandy in place of whisky. Later versions tried absinthe, orange curaçao, and fruit liqueurs.

Here are just a few suggestions:

What You Need To Make This Recipe

Whisky you can use rye or bourbon whisky to make this cocktail. You can even use Canadian whiskey, blended whisky, or Tennesse whisky. My go-to is this Makers Mark 46, as it has a smooth and subtle finish.

Angostura bitters In my opinion this is the bitter of choice for the best Manhattan as it adds warmth and spice to the cocktail with fruits, spices, and herbs flavor notes without overwhelming the drink.

I love using Luxardo Maraschino Cherries as garnish for a Manhattan. I dont recommend the bright red maraschino cherries as those are mostly dyed red and soaked in corn syrup instead of maraschino liqueur.

    Where The Manhattan Was Born

The urban myth is the 170-year-recipe for the perfect Manhattan cocktail was born at the the ManhattanClub in New York City in the 1870s. Fun fact is that it was supposed to have been invented for Winston Churchills mother, the American socialite Jennie Jerome.

This might all be false but it can be seen in one of the first cocktail recipes books, The Flowing Bowl by bartender William Schmidt, published in 1891. Whenever and wherever, the Manhattan has become one of the most popular cocktails of all time.

    The Old Fashioned Cocktail

One of the most common whisky cocktails, but dare I say one of the most hard to define? Every bartender seems to have a different definition. You could make an entire study of visiting different bars and examining their version of an old fashioned. So what is the oldest version of the classic Old Fashioned?

Note: The drink described below is the simplest, most traditional version.

    Making Your Own Simple Syrup

If you dont have simple syrup at home, you can make your own with sugar and water. You can use brown sugar, granulated sugar, or even coconut sugar.

This recipe works with all three! Brown sugar simple syrup will play up the vanilla notes in the Makers Mark.

To make a simple syrup, just add equal parts sugar and water to a small pot over high heat and whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Next, transfer it to a heat-safe glass and allow it to cool before using it for your mint julep.

Green tip: Making your own sauces and syrups is a great way to avoid extra plastic packaging that eventually ends up in landfills or makes its way into the environment and becomes microplastics.

    Strawberry Syrup

    INSTRUCTIONS

First off, muddle one half of a strawberry with the orange peel in the bottom of a cocktail shaker . Next, add your remaining ingredients into your cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake, shake, shake and strain into a double old-fashioned glass . Finish your drink by garnishing with a large strawberry and generous sprig of mint.

NOTE: Making strawberry syrup is simple! I just use my moms true and tested recipe. To make the strawberry syrup, dissolve 1 cup sugar into 1 cup water over high heat, add 4 diced strawberries to the pot and simmer on low until the mixture coats the back of a spoon. Last, let the syrup cool and then strain into a small bottle with a stopper . This will store up to one month in the fridge.

Pro Tips For Making This Recipe

    Makers Mark Manhattan
    • To help your drink stay cold longer, you can place your glasses in the freezer beforehand. If you didnt place the glasses in the freezer early enough, you can also fill the glasses with some water and place them in the freezer while preparing to make the drink for a quick chill.
    • Add a few drops of the syrup from the Luxardo Maraschino Cherries to make the drink a tad bit sweeter.
    • You can use any glass to stir the cocktail in. If you do not have a cocktail strainer, you can use any strainer or run the drink through a slotted spoon to keep the ice from falling in.
    • Try squeezing an orange peel and wiping the rim of your glass with it for an extra bit of flavor in your Manhattan.
    • Feel free to double or triple the recipe, just be sure to use a larger glass to mix your ingredients in.
