A new U.S. surge.The C.D.C said that the Omicron variants rapid spread in the U.S. may portend a surge in infections as soon as January, but cases are already spiking, leading offices to cancel holiday parties, Broadway performances to be shuttered and college finals to be moved online.
The Omicron variant.The new Covid variant has been detected in dozens of countries. While Omicron appears to be able to partially evade antibodies, it could be less severe than other forms of the virus, and new laboratory studies indicate that vaccines, and especially boosters, may offer protection against severe disease.
The J.& J. vaccine.An expert panel to the C.D.C. voted to recommend that Covid vaccines other than Johnson & Johnsons should be preferred, citing increasing evidence that those shots trigger a rare but potentially serious blood clotting disorder.
U.S. surpasses 800,000 deaths.Covid deaths in the United States surpassed 800,000 the highest known number of any country. About 75 percent of the 800,000 deaths have involved people 65 or older. One in 100 older Americans has died from the virus.
The closings began almost as soon as Broadway reopened. On Sept. 28, the Disney musical Aladdin resumed performances at the New Amsterdam Theater the next day, the show canceled a performance, citing breakthrough cases, and then, after another performance, it detected more cases and took a 12-day pause.

The Origins Of Broadway
Before “Broadway” became synonymous with the theater industry, it was simply a means of transportation. When Native Americans lived on the island called Mannahatta, their name for Broadway was the Wickquasgeck Trail. The trail naturally stretched the length of Mannahatta, and when Dutch colonists arrived to create New Amsterdam, they began using this thoroughfare, too, calling it de Heere Straat, or “Gentleman’s Street.” The road stretched from Fort Amsterdam through the settlement to a fortification against the English along what is now Wall Street. When the English took over New Amsterdam, renaming it New York, they renamed Broadway as well.
Origins And Early History
In 1836, mayor Cornelius Lawrence opened 42nd Street to encourage the city’s northern expansion, saying “move up town and enjoy the pure, clean air”. The Theater District began attracting theaters and restaurants after the Metropolitan Opera House moved to West 39th Street and Broadway in 1883.Oscar Hammerstein I opened his Victoria Theatre on 42nd Street in 1899. Accessibility to the Theater District improved as electrified trolley lines started in 1899, followed by the opening of the New York City Subway‘s first line in 1904.
“The Great White Way” is a nickname for a section of Broadway in Midtown Manhattan that encompasses the Theater District. In 1880, Broadway between Union Square and Madison Square was illuminated by Brusharc lamps, making it among the first electrically lighted streets in the United States. Competing With Motion Pictures
The motion picture mounted a challenge to the stage. At first, films were silent and presented only limited competition. By the end of the 1920s, films like The Jazz Singer were presented with synchronized sound, and critics wondered if the cinema would replace live theatre altogether. While live vaudeville could not compete with these inexpensive films that featured vaudeville stars and major comedians of the day, other theatres survived. The musicals of the Roaring Twenties, borrowing from vaudeville, music hall, and other light entertainment, tended to ignore plot in favor of emphasizing star actors and actresses, big dance routines, and popular songs. Florenz Ziegfeld produced annual spectacular song-and-dance revues on Broadway featuring extravagant sets and elaborate costumes, but there was little to tie the various numbers together. Typical of the 1920s were lighthearted productions such as Sally Lady Be Good Sunny No, No, Nanette Harlem Oh, Kay! and Funny Face. Their books may have been forgettable, but they produced enduring standards from George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, and Rodgers and Hart, among others, and Noël Coward, Sigmund Romberg, and Rudolf Friml continued in the vein of Victor Herbert. Live theatre has survived the invention of cinema.

Mere months after reopening to full capacity, Broadway is grappling with COVID-19 once again, as breakthrough cases among staff are forcing popular shows to temporarily shutter.
Hamilton,Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,Aint Too Proud,Mrs. Doubtfire,Tina The Tina Turner Musical, and Freestyle Love Supreme all had to close their curtains this week with performers and crew out sick. Wicked had to cancel a slew of performances earlier in December for the same reason, as did Chicago in November and Aladdin just a day after reopening.
Hamilton tweeted about its show closure less than an hour before Wednesdays curtain time, citing multiple breakthrough cases. All performers, crew and attendees at shows are required to be vaccinated, but as cases rise across New York City, the theater district has not been immune.
Doubtfire On Broadway
None of the shows got too specific about who had tested positive or how many cases they were dealing with.
Its a tough blow for Broadway as it struggles to come back after an almost 1.5-year hiatus.
Cases are surging around the city just in time for Christmas. New York University announced this week its moving finals online and canceling some indoor activities as more and more students continue to test positive, and restaurants around the city are announcing temporary closures with staff out sick.

A number of Broadway shows have canceled performances because of Covid-19 cases among cast members as the new Omicron variant spreads in New York City and across the country.
Performances of TinaThe Tina Turner Musical, Hamilton and Mrs. Doubtfire were canceled in recent days, citing breakthrough Covid-19 cases or positive Covid-19 test results, according to announcements on Twitter from the shows.
Broadways plans are just the latest to be upended amid the latest bout of uncertainty over the pandemic. Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations are on the rise even as the percentage of U.S. residents who are vaccinated continues to increase. And the percentage of Covid-19 cases in the U.S. caused by the rapidly moving Omicron variant is rising as well.
Theatergoers showed their proof of vaccination as they arrived for a performance of The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre in September.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday that the city would be increasing its testing capacity and would distribute one million KN95 masks. He said the city will also give out half a million at-home rapid tests and will start a media campaign to encourage people to get Covid-19 booster shots.
The city will also focus on inspecting businesses to ensure they are following Covid-19 mandates, he said.

The Origins Of Broadway Theater
While the English theater industry was well established by the time colonists began venturing to the New World, building settlements was rigorous work with little time for entertainment of this scale. No record of an organized theater production in America is available until 1732. On Dec. 6, 1732, a troupe of actors described as Londoners performed George Farquhar’s The Recruiting Officer in what was known as the New Theater, a building owned by the governor, Rip Van Dam. Later, the Nassau Street Theater, also owned by Van Dam, would host productions like Richard III as well as John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, the first musical production to be performed in New York, in 1750. Many of the early New York theaters were little more than wooden houses painted red, and though they would serve their purpose as a venue for stage productions, it would not be until the construction of the Park Theater in 1798 that theater venues in New York would resemble those in England.

Early Theatre In New York
New York’s first significant theatre presence arose about 1750 when actor-managers Walter Murray and Thomas Kean established a resident theatre company at the Theatre on Nassau Street, which held about 280 people. They presented Shakespeare plays and ballad operas such as The Beggar’s Opera. In 1752, William Hallam sent a company of twelve actors from Britain to the colonies with his brother Lewis as their manager. They established a theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia, and opened with The Merchant of Venice and The Anatomist. The company moved to New York in 1753, performing ballad operas and ballad-farces like Damon and Phillida. The Revolutionary War suspended theatre in New York, but thereafter theatre resumed in 1798, the year the 2,000-seat Park Theatre was built on Chatham Street ” rel=”nofollow”> Park Row). The Bowery Theatre opened in 1826, followed by others.
The plays of William Shakespeare were frequently performed on the Broadway stage during the period, most notably by American actor Edwin Booth who was internationally known for his performance as Hamlet. Booth played the role for a famous 100 consecutive performances at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1865 , and would later revive the role at his own Booth’s Theatre . Other renowned Shakespeareans who appeared in New York in this era were Henry Irving, Tommaso Salvini, Fanny Davenport, and Charles Fechter.

Birth Of The Musical And Post
Theatre in New York moved from downtown gradually to midtown Manhattan beginning around 1850, seeking less expensive real estate. At the beginning of the 19th century, the area that now comprises the Theater District was owned by a handful of families and comprised a few farms. In 1836, Mayor Cornelius Lawrence opened 42nd Street and invited Manhattanites to “enjoy the pure clean air.” Close to 60 years later, theatrical entrepreneur Oscar Hammerstein I built the iconic Victoria Theater on West 42nd Street.
Broadway’s first “long-run” musical was a 50-performance hit called The Elves in 1857. In 1870, the heart of Broadway was in Union Square, and by the end of the century, many theatres were near Madison Square. Theatres arrived in the Times Square area in the early 1900s, and the Broadway theatres consolidated there after a large number were built around the square in the 1920s and 1930s. New York runs continued to lag far behind those in London, but Laura Keene‘s “musical burletta” The Seven Sisters shattered previous New York records with a run of 253 performances. It was at a performance by Keene’s troupe of Our American Cousin in Washington, D.C. that Abraham Lincoln was shot.
New York City Plans Times Square Nye Return As Broadway Sees Covid Cancellations
Amid a rise in Covid-19 cases in New York City that have canceled some Broadway performances, the city will go ahead for now with plans to welcome back vaccinated revelers to watch the ball drop on New Years Eve.

Because it is an event where people are fully vaccinated and all outdoors, right now thats something were going forward with, he said of the Times Square event, which was announced in November.
Cases of Covid-19 have been on the rise in New York City. The new heavily mutated omicron variant that experts believe is more transmissible has also been found in the city and is spreading, according to health officials.
Several Broadway performances were canceled in recent days due to positive Covid-19 cases or test results including Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and most recently Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which called off Thursday nights performance.
Broadway went dark at the start of the pandemic and only largely began reopening in September.

Cdc Predicts Holiday Surge In Covid Cases
Last December, as the pandemic raged and with vaccines not widely available, New York City held a Times Square celebration without the large in-person crowds.
This year the crowds will be welcomed back to Times Square, but they will have to show proof of full vaccination.
“The great advantage is, outdoors and fully vaccinated,” de Blasio said.
The planned return of in-person crowds comes as more Americans are vaccinated and also returning to their traditional holiday habits.
Air travel numbers around the Thanksgiving holiday approached but did not match levels in 2019, according to Transportation Security Administration data.
But concerns over Covid-19 cases have prompted changes in policies, in New York and elsewhere.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul earlier this month said that masks must be worn indoors unless the venue has a vaccine requirement. She cited a winter surge of the virus and said the rule would be reassessed in January.
California also returned to a statewide indoor mask mandate, which applies regardless of vaccination status.
In Los Angeles, health officials on Thursday said that rules about using a negative test to enter a large event will be tightened, shortening the time period that tests would be accepted.
Earlier this week the number of deaths from Covid-19 in the United States passed 800,000.
