The truth is most people dont necessarily need that fast of an internet connection. Its nice if you can afford it, but there are also more reasonable options. Without any cable infrastructure whatsoever, Verizon is much more dependent on fiber deployments, with max download speeds of 940Mbps available for 64% of its customers as of June 2020. Fiber is much better than cable at handling uploads, too, so Verizon Fios customers can expect high upload speeds that match their download speeds, or that come close. For instance, that top-tier 940Mbps plan comes with upload speeds of up to 880Mbps.
Outside of Fios fiber-optic service, the rest of the customer base gets its internet from Verizon via DSL, which the FCC lists as available to 87% of subscribers at much slower download speeds ranging from 1.1 to 10Mbps.
Verizon also notes its growing 5G and LTE home internet service, which leverages the company’s cellular towers to beam internet connections directly into peoples’ homes.
“Our expansion of 5G Home … will continue throughout the year,” a Verizon spokesperson said.
Verizon’s coverage is concentrated in the Northeast US, while Comcast Xfinity service is more decentralized, and available in several regions.

A New Reality For Rsns
The loss of Comcast viewers for MSG Networks comes at a critical time for its Knicks franchise. The team made the NBA playoffs last season for the first time since 2013 and energized its fan base. But Comcast is no stranger when it comes to turmoil regarding RSNs that feature New York City teams.
In 2015 it dropped YES Network, co-owned by the Yankees. The channel eventually returned to Comcast in 2017. That dispute needed to resolve because the Yankees are a premium sports brand outside of New York. And Major League Baseball games are the main blood vessel for RSNs.
NBC operates its RSN in New York with SNY and has properties in regions that include Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. And Comcast temporarily renewed its deal with -owned YouTube to allow the service to continue streaming its NBCUniversal content.
When discussing the Comcast, MSG dispute, longtime sports media rights advisor Lee Berke called the move a “risk” as there could be pushback from customers. But he also cautioned RSNs are in danger if they don’t improve their strategy.
“The Comcast MSG situation is more than a temporary situation,” Berke said. “It’s a symptom of an ongoing, substantial problem for RSNs to continue to gain distribution from pay-TV services as the pay-TV universe continues to shrink.”
Berke said RSN offerings would further decline in the coming years.

Broadband Available Throughout New York City But The Poor Often Go Without
Broadband in the Big Apple is almost universally available, with residential coverage stand at virtually 100 percent, according to New York Citys Information, Technology, and Telecommunications department. But there are disparities based on age, education level, employment status, race and neighborhood, said a December 2014 report by the citys comptroller.
More than one-third of households in the Bronx lack broadband at home, compared to 30 percent in Brooklyn, 26 percent in Queens, 22 percent in Staten Island, and 21 percent in Manhattan, the report said.
TWC serves most of the five boroughs, but is not in the Bronx and is only in part of Brooklyn, Fitzmaurice told Ars. Time Warner Cable has 2.6 million subscribers in New York state, compared to 23,000 for Comcast. Cablevision, which operates mostly in New York, has 3.1 million customers.
In addition to making broadband more affordable, James wants infrastructure to be upgraded. “It’s really embarrassing that we lag behind Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Kansas City and other jurisdictions,” she said. Chattanooga and Kansas City have gigabit-speed fiber broadband. Comcast plans a gigabit upgrade, but its $400-per-month price for 500Mbps is more than five times higher than the $70 charged in Chattanooga and Kansas City.
Time Warner Cable’s “Ultimate” Internet service tops out at 50Mbps with only 5Mbps uploads and starts at $65 per month for the first year.
