Taste A Little Of Everything On A Food Tour
New York City is known as a hub for food of all kinds. And if youre like us, youll want to eat as much as humanly possible while visiting NYC.
But do you ever go somewhere wanting to try it all, but after one dish youre too full to keep going? Well, heres where the food tour idea comes in. A food tour allows you to try a little of everything without stuffing yourself on one item.
There are a ton of food tours to choose from in New York, but Foods of NY Tours is the oldest and one of the most reputable.

We selected the Heart & Soul of Greenwich Village tour and loved that it was a combination of history and trivia of New York City paired with lots of eating, of course!
Our guide was energetic and knowledgeable, the food was delicious, and we were able to walk between stops to help digest a bit .

How Many Days To Spend In New York
Spend at least five days in order to see New York like a local. Manhattan is the ultimate walking city, densely packed and not very long or wide. You won’t have to go very far and you’ll find Broadway plays to see, districts and restaurants to explore, drinks to be had, bookstores and botanical gardens to browse. And dont miss a walk on the Highline or the Brooklyn Bridge!
Visit The Empire State Building
Probably one of the most famous skyscrapers in the world, seeing the Empire State Building is pretty hard to miss.
You see, the Empire State Building actually dominates Midtown and is easy to visit.
If you fancy, head to the top of the Empire State Building which has some great views across the city. Just like the Top of the Rock, its a perfect place to see the city from above.

Broadway And The Theater District
Attending a Broadway show is one of the top things to do in New York City. Considered the pinnacle of American theater, this is the place to see the latest shows and the long-running classics.
Broadway usually refers simply to Broadway theater, which encompasses a large number of theater venues in the Theater District and along the street of Broadway. For the most popular shows, tickets should be purchased well in advance.
Shubert Alley is a famous pedestrian-only alley in the Theater District and home to two well-known playhouses: the Shubert on 221 West 44th Street and the Booth at 22 West 45th Street. Historically, aspiring actors would frequent Shubert Alley looking for opportunities to perform in a play sponsored by theater baron, Sam S. Shubert.
A Chorus Lineplayed at The Shubert for a record 6,137 shows. The musical Oklahomadebuted in 1941 at the St. James playhouse just down the street. Explore The Different Areas Of Manhattan
Although Manhattan is only one of five boroughs in New York, it has a treasure trove of different areas to explore. Best of all theyre totally unique and all have a different character, too.
If its cool art galleries and museums youre after, Midtown and the Upper East Side is the place to go. Its got a shed load of galleries and different museums that are well worth visiting when in the area.
Filled with world-renowned art and historical artefacts, theyre the kind of places you can spend hours exploring.
Honestly, its one of the best things to do in Manhattan, especially if you love art. Just make sure to keep an eye on the time, its easy to forget how quickly time can pass here.
Explore The African Burial Ground
The African Burial Ground in lower Manhattan is near the entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge. Here you will learn the history of the enslaved Africans that built much of lower Manhattan. Many were buried in unmarked graves. There is a very touching monument to them that you should be sure to visit. Near there is the Immigrant Museum so that you can learn about all the cultures that contributed to the melting pot the city is now.

Sunset On West Street Highway
Strolling on the 9A West Street Highway at sunset is a local favorite. Stop at some of the grassy areas on the Hudson River Greenway for picnicking or people watching. The colors over the Hudson River are pretty spectacular!
And if youre visiting in the summertime and are up for a beer and a lively atmosphere, the Frying Pan is a fun place to stop for live music and libations.

Broadway is the bright beating heart of NYCs performing arts scene. Watching a Broadway show is an experience like no other, fun guaranteed. There is no better place in the world to watch worldwide famous musicals, such as Aladdin, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Wicked, The Book of Mormon, Jersey Boys, and many more!
Catch A View Of The Skyline
Many choose to go to the top of the Empire State Building for its views of the city. Alternatively, you’ll get the iconic Empire State Building actually in all your photos if you go to the top of the Rockefeller Center instead!

Roosevelt Island
Historically used to quarantine criminals, the mentally ill, or physically ill, you won’t find many tourists here . Roosevelt Island is a part of Manhattan, once removed.
It’s far enough for an excellent skyline view, but not too far to get there, as it only takes a quick air tram ride across the East River or one stop on the F train toward Queens.
Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park
Another quick ride to Brooklyn on the F or A/C trains will get you to the area known to New Yorkers and Brooklynites as “DUMBO” or Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass.
The city has been putting a lot of work into the area stretching along the river to Brooklyn Bridge Park recently. Pathways and seating have opened up, artistic installations have sprouted, and lots of greenery has been planted along the walkways.
Construction is ongoing, but that doesn’t diminish the views. You will spot the Statue of Liberty from here as well as the downtown Manhattan skyline.
While you’re in the area, you might as well walk across Brooklyn Bridge!

New York Botanical Garden
In lush parkland over 250 acres, the New York Botanical Garden grows more than a million individual plants in 50 different spaces and collections.
This is a leading botanical institution, conducting research and conservation programmes that employ 600 staff.
For visitors there are lots of delights, like a tract of the old growth forest that covered all of New York before it was settled by Europeans in the 17th century.
Never logged, this grows white ash, birch, tulip, cherry and American beech trees.
A sight to behold is the beautiful Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, built with a wrought iron frame in the 1890s and hosting a glorious orchid show every spring.
You can saunter around a Japanese Rock Garden, 37 acres of conifers, wetlands, a herb garden and the magical Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden.
An Art Deco tower of startling and delicate beauty, the Chrysler Building has an allure that sets it apart from New Yorks other skyscrapers.
For 11 months until the Empire State Building was topped off, this was the tallest building in the world, standing at 319 metres.
It was ordered by the automobile tycoon Walter Chrysler, and was the career apogee of architect William van Alen.
The tower is iconic for the tiered arches and triangular windows of its lustrous stainless steel crown, above eagle motif gargoyles on the 61st floor.
Arrive early to visit the stadiums open-air museum at Monument Park, crackling with 120 years of history.
Spot The Filming Of A Show Or Movie
When you live in New York City for a while, you start to catch onto all the celebrity activities going on.
For one, you may spot parking notices on telephone poles informing residents and business owners to refrain from parking on that street on certain dates. These notices are usually a good indication of a television show or movie coming in to do some filming and park their trailers along the sidewalks.
Earlier this year, they parked them directly in front of my Upper East Side sublet. Then, a few days later, there was another show happening a few blocks over.
Other times, you’ll be walking down the street and someone will suddenly rush by you, chased by a group of people carrying boom mics and camera equipment. Dozens of times I’ve found myself wondering, “Was I just in the background of that shot?!”
A perfect example is when Jono and I were walking around DUMBO. We noticed people blocking the street up ahead and then an explosion went off from the top of a nearby building. People came running toward us and that’s when a guy with an earpiece told us the street was closed for filming. We captured the moment on camera:
Apparently, they were filming Stephen King’s up-and-coming The Dark Tower! The people running were extras and the street was closed so we wouldn’t accidentally enter the shot .

Classic Things To Do In New York City
Take in the views from the Empire State Building
Theres nothing like enjoying great panoramic views of New York City and the Empire State Building is perfect for that. Completed in 1931, this was the tallest building in the world at the time it was built.
Go right before the sun sets, for an even better experience, but beware there may be lines for the tickets, as well as for the elevator to the observatory.
The Empire State Building is open daily from 12:00 to 9:00 pm. Tickets start at $42 USD and must be bought ahead of time. You can get your tickethere or, for a late night visit, here.
Visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
Albeit located in New Jersey state, the Statue of Liberty a UNESCO World Heritage Site is the symbol of the city. The typical starting point to visit it is Battery Park, from where ferries leaves. As the ferry gets closer, the views of the Statue and of Manhattan are impressive.
Once there, you can get to the Pedestal to visit the museum and learn about the its history. Tours usually continue to Ellis Island before heading back to Manhattan.
