Hard as it is to believe, Election Day 2020 is finally here. As the presidential race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden finally draws to a close, we’re here to help with some basic questions about the vote.

Can I vote online?

You can use the internet to post a tweet that loses you billions of dollars, if you are Elon Musk. Or that sows doubt in the integrity of the electoral process, if you are the president of the United States. But unless you are serving overseas in the military or are a citizen abroad registered in some US states, you cannot vote from your phone, or online at all. Sorry.

The reason is simple: Theres no existing technology that can ensure your vote wouldnt be tampered with if sent electronically over the internet or a cellular network. Voting security experts say that even the apps and websites that overseas military are permitted to use to vote are not secure. Earlier this year, a security audit of online voting platform Voatz found numerous issues. Voatz disputed the analysis, but remains sidelined for the vast majority of US voters.

But dont be discouraged! Voting in person can be fun! And it doesnt have to be that hard. All you need is to be registered and know where to go.

National Conference Of State Legislatures Report 2018

On February 14, 2018, the National Conference of State Legislatures released a report on the costs of election administration in the states: “The Price of Democracy: Splitting the Bill for Elections.” The report’s authors noted that “no one knows how much spend on elections … good research on election costs is slim.” Generally, local units of government are primarily responsible for election administration costs, though states and the federal government may also contribute. The report identified the states listed in the table below as assuming financial responsibility for at least some aspects of election administration.

Heres everything you need to know about registering to vote in NYC.

Eligibility

You are eligible to register to vote if you are:

a U.S. citizen
a New York City resident for at least 30 days
at least 16 years old

There are several ways to register to vote. Here are your options:

If you have a New York State IDYou can register to vote online with the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. You will need a valid NYS driver license, permit, or non-driver ID, along with the last four digits of your social security number to begin.

If you do not have a New York State IDYou can complete a voter registration form and mail it to the Board of Elections. You can also visit your Borough Board of Elections office to register in person.

Pre-register to vote in NYC

What Happens To My Voter Registration Application

The electronic voter registration application is transferred from DMV to your County or City Board of Elections for review. Once processed, your County or City will notify you either that you are registered to vote or additional information is needed to complete your application.

The DMV does not approve or deny voter registration applications. We only send the application to the County or City Board of Elections for their review.

Reporting Violations Of Voting Rights

Voters who believe that their rights have been violated have local, statewide and national resources.

The person in charge of a polling place handles most routine complaints.
Poll watchers at the polling location from nonprofit organizations or campaigns may be able to provide assistance. Remember, you do not need to disclose who you voted for or intend to vote for to receive assistance.

Victims Of Domestic Violence

N.Y. Election Law allows victims of domestic violence who obtain a court order from NY Supreme Court, Family Court or County Court in the county where they are registered to have their voter registration record kept separate and apart from other registration records and not be made available for inspection or copying by the public or any other person, except election officials acting within the course and scope of their official duties. Convicted Felons’ Voting Rights

On May 4, 2021, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed S830 into law, providing for the automatic restoration of voting rights for individuals convicted of felonies upon completion of their prison sentences. Previously, state law provided for the restoration of voting rights after completion of both prison time and parole.

Voting rights for convicted felons vary from state to state. In the majority of states, convicted felons cannot vote while they are incarcerated but may regain the right to vote upon release from prison or at some point thereafter.

Change Your Party Registration

The New York voter registration form can be used to change your party enrollment from one party to another or to enroll for the first time in a party. A change of enrollment received up until February 14 each year will be effective immediately. The deadline for updating your voter information for the 2021 primary has passed. Changes received on or after February 15 until seven days after the June Primary will be set aside and opened the seventh day following the June Primary and entered in the voter’s registration record.
