Nyrr Gets New Sponsor For Brooklyn Half Marathon

New York Road Runners has signed the Royal Bank of Canada as the title sponsor for the Brooklyn Half Marathon, the nations most popular 13.1-mile race. As part of the new sponsorship agreement, NYRR will also take over operational management of RBCs Race for the Kids event, taking place in Central Park in April, and RBC will sponsor the youth physical education program Rising New York Road Runners.

We have been talking to RBC for years, literally. We started talking to them prior to the pandemic, and we had one of our final meetings in person before the world shut down, said Christine Burke, NYRR senior vice president of strategic partnerships and runner products. Its probably the longest deal Ive ever worked on, but its been well worth the wait.

In fact, the pre-COVID conversations first began after RBC had reached out seeking an operational partner for its annual Race for the Kids fun run, which began in 2009. That initial charity event has grown into a global series thats raised over $50 million, but the New York race has until now been operated solely by the bank.

We were kind of getting to capacity where we were, said Vito Sperduto, global head of mergers and acquisitions for RBC and the team captain of Race for the Kids. It takes a lot to put on that event when thats the only event of that type we put on during the year.

More than 25,000 runners take to the streets of Brooklyn and cross the finish line each year at the annual running of this race, organized by the New York Road Runners club which also organizes the famed New York City Marathon each fall, and the New York City Half Marathon in the spring.

One of a series of races in each of New Yorks five boroughs throughout the year, this race takes runners on a course that winds past, alongside and through many of Brooklyns most famous sights and attractions, including Prospect Park, the New York Aquarium and the Coney Island boardwalk, where theyll finish the race overlooking the beach.

Fast and largely flat , the race follows a point-to-point route that starts just outside the northeast corner of Prospect Park, one of New Yorks true parkland jewels.

Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead who also designed its more famous counterpart across the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, Central Park the 585-acre parks history dates all the way back to the Civil War era , and today it is an urban oasis of huge green meadows, trees, forests and lakes in the midst of one of the densest cities in the U.S.

From the starting line along Eastern Parkway, runners first head south along Washington Avenue and then onto Ocean Avenue and Parkside Avenue, which hugs the southern end of Prospect Park.

Runner Dies At Brooklyn Half Marathon Finish Line More Than A Dozen Others Hospitalized

Running News Tagged #NYRR

The Brooklyn Half Marathon is back and just in time for 22,000-plus runners to get soaked in sweat in summer-like conditions.

The 13.1-mile race will be held in person for the first time since the pandemic began, with runners starting Saturday morning at the Brooklyn Museum and trekking through Prospect Park before ending at the Coney Island boardwalk.

The dash to the finish, however, will come during the first hot-weather event of the year with temperatures expected to reach 88 degrees on Saturday.

That means celebrity runners like NBCs Today weatherman Al Roker, Good Morning America anchor T.J. Holmes and Bachelorette alum Zac Clark will need to stay hydrated while protecting themselves from the hot spell.

As heat and humidity increase, so too do the risks of heat-related medical issues, according to the New York Road Runners group, which urged runners to respect their limits.

Do not aim for a personal best on a warm, sticky day, particularly if you are not used to such conditions, NYRRs website reads.

More than 40 members of the NYC Ukrainian Running Club are also participating in the races in-person return, as well as a Prospect Heights couple celebrating their five-year anniversary.

At least two runners, however, wont be heeding the call to not aim for personal bests amid the higher-than-usual temps. Marie-Ange Brumelot, of Queens, and her father are gunning for the Guinness World Record for the fastest half marathon by a parent and child.
