Is It Worth It To Use Illegal Sports Betting Sites

No. Some people will beg to differ with us on that, but its just not.

Offshore betting sites are breaking New York State law. In fact, their lack of oversight allows them to offer their services practically anywhere. The question is: What else can these websites do with impunity? When a bettor doesnt have any real recourse if theres a dispute, thats an unsafe betting site, period.

Moreover, the bill requires the commission to pay 5 percent of the tax into the fund to handle costs associated with sports betting regulation and an additional 5 percent that will be distributed for problem gaming education and treatment initiatives.

Another Stalled Year In Ny

The COVID-19 pandemic quickly ended whatever hope existed for New York sports betting reform in 2020. Legislators again attempted to convince Gov. Andrew Cuomo to include updated sports betting language in his state budget to no avail.

With the state legislative session upended by the pandemic, more pressing matters took priority. New York suffered its worst days of the pandemic in spring 2020, when the legislature typically is accomplishing its normal business.

New York Is Seeking Mobile Sports Betting Operators But When Can You Actually Place A Wager

Sports betting at upstate NY casinos can begin in May

The New York State Gaming Commission is now seeking bids for companies to operate mobile sports betting platforms.Don Cazentre

If all goes as planned, you might be able to place a legal online bet in New York in time for Super Bowl LVI. That will be held Feb. 6, 2022.

Why so long? After all, the state approved legal online sports wagers in March.

But the State Gaming Commission didnt seek bids for the operators of the gaming platforms until July 9. That was a week behind schedule. And the bid review and awarding process will likely take months.

Once the online operators are licensed and open, bettors will be able to place wagers via their devices or computers on the outcomes of games or even some prop bets, such as which team in a given game will score first.

The Super Bowl is a target for getting mobile betting in place because it typically generates more wagers across the country than any other sporting event.

In the meantime, the only legal way to place a sports wager in New York is to go to one of the four full-service commercial Upstate casinos, or one operated by an Upstate Indian nation, and place an in-person bet at their sports betting parlors, also known as sportsbooks.

The timeline for reviewing proposals and awarding online licenses is about 150 days, which could put the start of accepting mobile bets into December or January. Bids must be submitted by Aug. 9 and the Gaming Commission will choose finalists no later than Dec. 6.

Mobile Sports Wagering Could Be Legal In New York By January

Perhaps in time for the Super Bowl next February, New Yorkers will be able to place sports bets on their phones and laptops, opening up a large stream of revenue for the state.

Mobile sports wagering is expected to be legal by early next year, meaning New Yorkers will be able to place bets on all kinds of sporting events, including professional and college games.

âIâm hopeful, I remain optimistic that we will place our first mobile sports bet in New York by early January, certainly by the Super Bowl,â said State Senator Joe Addabbo. âAnd yes, anywhere in New York. That is the idea.â

What You Need To Know

  • Mobile sports wagering could be legal in New York State by January
  • While New York lags behind neighboring states, a 51% tax rate could enable New York to catch up quickly
  • One key supporter says he is disappointed more wasn’t done to give licenses to minority-owned companies

Sports wagering was approved earlier this year by lawmakers as part of the state budget. And while New York is behind neighboring states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, supporters say the size of the market here could easily enable the state to catch up quickly.

Revenue from wagering will be taxed at a whopping 51%, which some in the industry believe is unsustainable, but it should still generate hundreds of millions of dollars for New York State.

Some of the biggest beneficiaries stand to be companies like Draftkings and FanDuel, two of the largest providers of mobile betting in the nation.

Ny Online Sports Betting Options

At the moment, there are no legal online betting options in New York, and new legislation will be required in order to change that.

The good news is that new legislation may not be too far off. There has been a willingness from lawmakers to introduce a new sports betting bill in 2019 to update the 2013 bill which is currently in effect.

New Yorkers who really want to bet online or using their mobile devices can always head over to New Jersey, where mobile betting is already legal and thriving. This will be a major factor in state lawmakers moving quickly to expand sports betting to include online and mobile betting.

Another great alternative while New Yorkers wait for legal mobile betting is the TVG horse racing app. Keep reading for more on that.

Sports Betting Legalized In New York With Limitations

A Sports Gambling Ban Was Overturned, but Can You Bet on ...

In , the New York State Gaming Commission released rules for betting in the state, basing its guidelines on the 2013 gaming expansion law.

Even before the first legal wagers were placed in , legislators began pushing for the authorization of online sports betting. Sen. Joseph Addabbo Jr. was at the front of the effort, but time and again, the quest to expand regulated wagering online has fell short.

The latest effort appears to have finally succeeded. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has expressed his desire not to have online betting in New York, eased up on the idea to provide funding for his budget. However, his plan for online betting was much different than the one lawmakers have proposed in the past.

The framework is largely a state-run model. The legislation calls for the NYSGC to contract with two platform providers, who will each hold at least two skins to delve out. It isnt yet clear exactly who qualifies to be a platform provider or how the state will solve the potential conflict with tribal exclusivity zones. For the time being, though, it looks like Cuomo got his wish and legal online sports betting is coming to the Empire State at some point.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Calls To Legalize Mobile Sports Betting, Marijuana

Plenty of New Yorkers are already comfortable with betting at NJ sportsbooks. Online CT sportsbooks just launched as well with 38% of the volume in the first week coming from the southwest corner of the state.

There are certainly markets that do not see heavy promos, though that is typically based on exclusivity. DraftKings Sportsbook typically does not include New Hampshire in its nationwide promotions because it holds a monopoly in the state. Sports betting in Florida launched this week but the sole operator, Hard Rock Sportsbook, is offering just $100 in risk-free bets.

New York sportsbook operators will have to find a balance between not overextending themselves because of the expensive cost of doing business, while also attracting enough business to make their efforts worthwhile.
