The fight to get Happy the Elephant released from the Bronx Zoo was back in court Monday, with a judge hearing arguments from both sides.The group the Nonhuman Rights Project filed a lawsuit last year for her release to an elephant sanctuary, asking the court to recognize Happys legal personhood and right to bodily liberty.

The History Of The Bronx Zoo
The zoo opened to the public on November 8th, 1905, and it remains one of the worldâs largest metropolitan zoos today.
The New York Zoological Society was created in 1895 by a group of mostly Boone and Crockett Club members who wanted to establish a zoo, foster zoological research, and protect animals.
The zoo covers an area of 255 acres and is home to more than six thousand animals representing over 600 species.
It was founded by zoologist William Temple Hornaday who wanted visitorsâ attention directed towards nature preservation issues.
In addition to being one of Americaâs most popular zoos, it has been recognized among several leading international institutions for its conservation efforts as well as scientific research programs.
Robert Moses was responsible for building a lot of the infrastructure within New York City during his tenure as Parks Commissioner from 1934 until 1968, including highways bridges and parks.
He also oversaw the construction of the Bronx Zoo.
Moses was a proponent, as well as a supporter, of wildlife conservation in general, so he helped create many zoos in New York City.
The Bronx Zoo opened with 800 animals on November 8th, 1905 for one million dollars it remains one of Americaâs largest metropolitan zoos today.
Its collection includes over two thousand species, representing all seven continents, including Antarctica.

At that time Nadias sister, two Siberian tigers, and three African lions also had coughs and a loss of appetite. When Nadia started showing symptoms, the veterinary team did a number of diagnostic tests and blood work. Considering whats going on in New York City, we of course did the COVID testing, Calle said. The team took samples at the zoo, after sedating Nadia. They sent the samples for testing to the New York State Diagnostic Laboratory at Cornell University and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. It is not the same type of test that health care providers give to people, Calle said, so there is no competition for testing between these very different situations.
The zoo has all eight catsone of which is not showing symptomsunder veterinary care and expects them to recover, the Wildlife Conservation Society statement says. While its becoming clear humans can pass the disease to some animals, there is currently no evidence that animals can spread the novel coronavirus to people, both the USDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say.

This blue baby penguin is the first of its species to be born at the Bronx Zoo, joining a family of 24 little blue penguins that made their debut at zoo last year. Jim Morley, director of purchasing for The Wildlife Conservation Society of New York, headquartered at The Bronx Zoo, said: One minute an air handler in a public facility requires work, the next minute something needs attention at the elephant shelter building and youve got to remember to stay behind the yellow line so you dont get caught under foot.

On a crisp late summer day, I visited the Bronx Zoo. Most kids had gone back to school so I gloriously zipped through the line, but right before I paid my entrance fee I caught glimpse of a sign: it was a little too cold for some of the animals so they wouldnt be on view.
Always cold, I tightened the belt of my jacket around me, remembering one of my earliest memories of the zoo: wandering through an underground tunnel of the Childrens Zoo there, where Id pop my head up through a hole to see prairie dogs scurrying around on the grass right outside the plastic dome covering the burrow. It was like I was the prairie dog!
That was around the age when I learned in my environmental science class that some animals burrowed under the ground or crawled into dens to hibernate. The prairie dog goes into a hibernation-like sleep, and indeed some exhibits are seasonal though the zoo is open year-round.

The Bronx Zoo is a zoo situated within Bronx Park, in the Bronx, a borough of New York City.
It is the biggest metropolitan zoo in the U.S. and among the largest in the world.
On average, the zoo has 2,672 animals and 625 species it comprises 265 acres of parklands as well as naturalistic habitats separated by gender roads, with various viewing points to observe them.

History Of The Bronx Zoo
The Bronx Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in the world. In 1898, the City of New York allotted 250 acres of Bronx Park to the New York Zoological Society to build a park aimed at preserving native animals and promoting zoology. The Bronx Zoo opened in 1899 and remains one of the largest wildlife conservation parks in the United States, housing 4,000 animals representing more than 650 species.
Several architectural features at the zoo are official city landmarks, including the entire area from the Rainey Gate entrance on Fordham Road to the far end of Astor Court at Zoo Center . The buildings in Astor Court were designed by the firm of Heins & Lafarge, who also designed the original plans for the cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan’s Morningside Heights and many of the subway station details on the IRT line.
