  • Wear good footwear — between waiting for security, boat rides, and climbing the stairs, you’re going to spend a lot of time on your feet.
  • Use the bathroom once you clear security to enter the monument. These are the only facilities available inside of the Statue and you don’t want to have to quit before you reach the top because you have to hit the washroom!
  • In the summer, be prepared for the heat. Stay hydrated and be aware that inside of the Statue can be much warmer than outside. Visit early in the morning if you want to make it to the crown before the heat does.
  • In the winter, consider wearing a shorter coat when you climb the Statue — you might trip on a full-length jacket while climbing up the narrow steps to the crown.
  • Take advantage of the audio-tour. There are options for both adults and children and it really enhances the experience of visiting the Statue of Liberty. The audio tour has spots both inside the museum as well as outside around Liberty Island.
  • Ask the rangers if you have any questions! There are Park Rangers stationed throughout the Statue of Liberty who are tremendously helpful and knowledgeable.
  • Don’t forget to allow time to visit Ellis Island.

I know its not polite to discuss a ladys measurements but the Statue of Liberty has a 35 ft waistline. Must be all that New York strip-steak. Makes me feel a bit better about my exanded waistline post New York.

Emma Lazarus is a New York poet who penned the sonnet that is etched into a bronze plaque that sits on the Statue of Liberty Pedestal. You may have heard the most famous part of her Statue of Liberty poem, which says:

Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

The Great Hall Ellis Island

The Great Hall is the first thing you will see on Ellis Island. Just like the 12 million immigrants who saw it for the first time when arriving in America between 1892 1924. This Ellis Island Museum is dedicated to the people who waited for access to the United States searching for a better way of life.

Today, many people come to Ellis Island to trace their ancestry. Unfortunately no Bouskills or Corbeils were on the list of immigrants who came through here.

Great hopes were placed on life in the new world, but the new immigrants faced many hardships from child labor, low wages and cramped quarters. But it was here that many began their American Dream.

Make your way up to the second floor for an excellent collection of photos displaying the history of Ellis Island. The images are haunting and inspiring all at once.

On the third floor, you will see a recreation of the sleeping quarters for new immigrants awaiting entrance to New York City. Beds were stacked 3 berths high on canvas cots that could be raised during the day. The third floor also offers an overhead view of the Grand Hall where people awaited their hearings regarding citizenship.

We spent quite a while perusing the photos and history of Ellis Island. While many people skip it, if you have the time, we say dont miss it.

From the Statue of Liberty, we recommend visiting Wall Street including the Charging Wall Street Bull, and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Is Statue Of Liberty Crown Access Worth It

Honestly? Id say not really. Apart from the climb being exceptionally vertiginous, when you get to the top, the peep holes for views over Manhattan were i) a lot smaller than I expected ii) made out of perspex and therefore too scratched for great visuals iii) in hot demand, so theres a lot of pressure to have a look and kindly move on iv) experienced whilst scrunched into hot, tight spot with a bunch of strangers.

These are the tiny peep holes you get to look out of inside the crown of the Statue of Liberty dont they look like theyd be bigger when you see pictures of them? Also, check out the etching on the perspex. Photo ruining vandals are the worst.

This is one of the views you get from inside the crown not as impressive as I thought it would be and makes for meh photos.

Now lets compare that Crown Access photo above to this photo that I took from outside on the pedestal.

All in, Id say that pedestal access would have done me and I wouldnt be majorly disappointed if you cant bag one of the highly coveted Crown tickets for your trip.

How Long Does A Statue Of Liberty Tour Take

Visiting both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, climbing into the crown, a quick coffee and sandwich break to refuel and a relatively quick look around the immigration museum on Ellis Island took me about six hours from arrival at the departure point in Battery Park. From the research Ive done online, thats about standard.

However, if you visit during peak season, add extra time for security checks and ferry queues, which can add an extra 90 minutes per ferry ride in peak season .

If, on the other hand, you visit in low-season and are efficient with your time and dont climb up to the crown, you could probably cut this down to half a day. In other words, dont dismiss a visit to the Statue of Liberty just because youre short on time while youre in New York.

The guided tours will have you done in about four hours so if you only want to commit to a half-day at the Statue of Liberty, book a tour.
