As of right now, the chance of having a beach day at the nearby county-run beaches on Long Island is getting more and more slim, as elected officials fear NYC’s eight million people will flock to Long Island beaches, leaving them inundated.
Suffolk County Long Island Executive Steve Bellone announced Monday that county beaches will be reserved for Suffolk residents only. “It’s my priority that Suffolk residents will have access to their beaches with safety rules in place,” he said.
In Nassau County, county executive Laura Curran said Tuesday she would sign legislation to make popular Nickerson Beach for Nassau County residents only. In order to ensure Nassau residents can enjoy our only County-operated beach, I will sign legislation designating Nickerson Beach for Nassau residents use only. Nyc Beaches Opening May 29 City Pools Reopening June 26 Mayor Says
NEW YORKNew York Citys public beaches and pools will open on time this year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday.
All of the citys eight public beaches will open for Memorial Day weekend beginning Saturday, May 29.
Lifeguards will be on duty daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Swimming is unsafe and strictly prohibited at all other times.
The 48 public pools will welcome guests as summer vacation kicks off for public school kids on Saturday, June 26.
Five of the citys outdoor pools will be closed due to active reconstruction projects.
All standard pool protocols will apply, and open swim hours will remain the same: 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Last year, we had to delay the openings with public beaches. We had to limit the number of public pools. This year, we get to do what is great for the families of the city, the kids of the city Have them all open, the mayor said.
Health and safety measures will be in place, including mask wearing and social distancing.
Its going to be a wonderful summer for New York City, de Blasio said.
Last year, city beaches were delayed in opening until July 1 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Yorkers, on lockdown since mid-March, will get a respite Memorial Day weekend as state beaches and lakes have been cleared to open.
But, New York City residents will have to travel if they want to lay out, as the sand in the five boroughs is still off limits, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday.
Some of the things people traditionally do, the beaches and the public pools, thats not in the cards right now, de Blasio said at his daily briefing just a few hours before Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that he and three other governors have agreed to reopen public beaches and lakes in tandem on Memorial Day weekend. Along with New York state beaches, those in New Jersey and Delaware have been given the OK to open the same day. Connecticut beaches, meanwhile, were never closed.
Cuomo added a number of caveats, however, including the continued need to social distance, for beachgoers to wear masks and for park operators to monitor parking lots to keep the beach at 50% capacitya potentially fraught task.
The statewide beach reopenings will include two state parks that draw crowds from New York City, Robert Moses State Park and Jones Beach, both on Long Island, just east of Queens.
No volleyball, no football, nothing like that, he said.

NYC Parks maintains 14 miles of beaches. Beaches are open from Memorial Day weekend through September 12, 2021. During beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty and in closed sections. New York State Beaches Open Up For Memorial Day Weekend
IRVING, N.Y. Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, but beach life as we know it will now come with a boatload of new rules.
“Im very stressed,” says Kelly Borrello, manager at Sunset Bay Beach Club in Irving. That’s because her private beach opened up to the public on Thursday.
I was very, very, very concerned when we werent able to be open,” she said. “How we were going to keep people out? Im not like a store, I dont have doors I can lock.
Borrello no longer has to worry, because last Friday, Governor Andrew Cuomo gave New York State beaches the approval to reopen, but only if they implement these rules:
- Limited capacity to 50%
- No group contact activities, including sports
- Areas of social gathering closed
- Social distancing measures enforced for employees and visitors
- Masks required for employees and visitors when social distancing is not possible
- No concessions stands
- Adequate staffing levels to enforce social distancing measures and crowd control
Governor Cuomo added that if local governments do not enforce the rules, beaches will be closed.
Borrello says half capacity at Sunset Beach equals around 800 visitors.

With Memorial Day around the corner, Borrello expects the beach to get crowded fast.
Regardless of the new rules, beach-goers say, were still going to have fun. Thats all that were here to do.

The Good News: Nyc Beaches Are Open

The news comes after Cuomo extended the stay home orders for NYC residents until June 13 as five other regions are slated to reopen on Friday.
Four other regions also haven’t met the seven criteria needed to reopen on May 15, when the governor’s PAUSE order was set to expire.
Cuomo issued an executive order before today’s media briefing after confirming that Central New York, the Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier and the North Country regions would all reopen on May 15.

Beaches and pools across New York can open for Memorial Day with six-foot distancing as COVID-19 rates plunge statewide, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.
He aims to have them open at 100 percent capacity by July 4.
The Empire States low infection rate of 1 percent just a fourth of the national rate is a promising sign that a normal summer is on the horizon, Cuomo said.
We have to get on with life, and we want to have a great summer, he said. Our goal is by the 4th of July to go to 100 percent capacity at all beaches and pools. If the numbers keep going the way theyre going, were going to be able to do that. So, we would actually be able to have a normal summer.
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio had already announced his plans to have Big Apple beaches open for Memorial Day. He also said that 48 of the citys 53 public outdoor pools will open the day after Gothams last day of school on June 26. The remaining five are closed for rehabilitation.

Ready to cool off? Eight New York City beaches are officially opening for the summer this weekend.
On Saturday, May 29, the following beaches will be open for swimming in New York City: Orchard Beach in the Bronx Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn Rockaway Beach in Queens and Midland Beach, South Beach, Cedar Grove Beach, and Wolfes Pond Beach on Staten Island.
The summer heat has arrived, and with the return of swimming at our beaches, comes another step in our collective return to normalcy. It is with great pleasure that I say to all New Yorkers: grab your sunglasses, sunscreen, and swim gear beach season is here! said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP. We want everyone to enjoy our eight public beaches this season, but it must be done safely swimming is only allowed in designated areas, from 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. when lifeguards are on duty.
The beaches will remain open through Sunday, Sept. 12 and lifeguards will be on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. swimming will be prohibited at all other times. Finally Nyc Beaches Are Open For Swimming Thank God
This isnt a normal summer.
For more than a month, 14 miles of public beaches in New York City had been closed to swimming to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
But last week, cooped-up New Yorkers were finally able to meet the sand and sea.
Though outdoor spaces, like beaches, are safer than packed bars, the threat of the virus still lingered. Some beachgoers wore masks, while others kept their distance from one another.
In March, the pandemic halted New Yorks economy. Then in May, the city transformed again as protests against racism and police brutality filled the streets.
With daily life upended, New Yorkers relished the chance to feel the sand between their toes, and a sense of normalcy.
On Thursday, Rodney Jackson, 21, an actor and painter, went to the beach for the first time in his life. He relaxed all day in the sand with his partner Tommy Celano, 24.
Life is a series of waves, and sometimes theyre too big, and you get splashed in the face, Mr. Jackson said.
Along the sand, children built castles, taking breaks to swim out as far as they could.
Their parents sunbathed on lounge chairs.
This is something people have been waiting patiently for maybe not always patiently for but its here, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Eugene came to the beach by himself on his day off from work. He swam to beat the heat, he said.
New York City beaches were slow to open compared with suburban beaches in in the region, which have been open since Memorial Day weekend.

While New York City beaches remain closed to swimming, the NYPD said late Thursday they would open for sunbathing. Beachgoers can enter the water up to their ankles. Surfing is also OK. Strict social distancing is required, along with other precautions.
Mayor Bill de Blasio acknowledged this holiday weekend poses a particular challenge to this stir-crazy city.
“We want to make sure people understand: You can walk on the beach, do it in a manner consistent with everything we’ve talked about,” the mayor said. “We associate this weekend with freedom of summer. If you want your freedom, you can’t let your guard down.”
NYPD beach patrols will be up 30 percent and Parks Department patrols will also be out in force to make sure people understand the ground rules, the mayor said. They won’t hesitate to enforce them if necessary. Fifty city vehicles will cruise the streets of the five boroughs making amplified announcements to remind people of the guidelines.
Some may take issue with certain aspects of the plan, de Blasio said. But he says it’s what has to be done to safeguard public health.
“We could put up fences and close the beaches entirely. But that’s not our goal,” de Blasio said Friday. “We all have fought to get as far as we’ve gotten in these last weeks. We’ve got a lot of momentum now. We’ve got to hold onto it. If we get too loose we’ll start going backwards and the last thing we want is more restrictions on our lives. We cannot let that happen. I won’t let that happen.”

The mayor has previously voiced concerns about reopening beaches too soon because of the coronavirus pandemic, CBS New York noted.
“The situation where you’re going to group tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people in the same place is a more sensitive decision,” he said earlier this month.
Pools remain closed throughout the city and it’s not clear if or when they will reopen this summer.
Although playgrounds reopened as part of New York City’s phase 2 reopening plan this week, spray showers at city parks will also remain off for the time being. An update on when spray showers would be activated could come sometime this week, CBS New York reports.
“You’re going to see a lot of Parks Department efforts to create sprinklers and other kinds of ways for people to cool down,” de Blasio said.
