Occupying two million square feet, with a permanent collection of over two million works of art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest art galleries in the world. This famous fine arts museum in NYC boasts works from classical antiquity, Ancient Egypt, Asia, Byzantium, and Europe, with nearly all of the European masters represented. The Temple of Dendur, a bronze cast of Auguste, Rodins The Burghers of Calais, Jackson Pollocks Autumn Rhythm and Van Goghs Self-Portrait are perennial favorites.

American Museum Of Natural History

Located on Central Park West & 79th Street, the American Museum of Natural History features incredible exhibitions about human cultures, nature, the universe, and more! So whether you are interested in dinosaurs or ecology, rare wildlife or Native Americans, it has something for everyone.

AMNH is divided into seven sections, each featuring one aspect of nature and the universe. If you are interested in wildlife, Alaska Brown Bear, Blue Whale Model, Mammoth Skeleton, or Tyrannosaurus rex exhibitions are where you should be. If human culture is your thing, head to Origami Holiday Tree, Great Canoe, and Rapa Nui Moai Cast!

There are also special displays that require an additional fee. The Butterfly Conservatory is our favorite, where a winding path leads you through an indoor rain forest with over 500 vibrant butterflies as they flutter in the air.

  • Admission is free on the first Tuesday of every month and every Tuesday in September.

    Otherwise, it is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $7 for children. You will get a $1 discount when you reserve online.

The New Museum Of Contemporary Art

The New Museum of Contemporary Art is a new, cutting-edge museum in Chelsea, Manhattan. The museum is home to an extensive collection of contemporary art from all over the world.

The building itself is sleek and modern and was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm Admission is free for all visitors.

One Vanderbilt Another Thing To Do In Manhattan As A Couple

If youre visiting the city with your sweetheart and youre looking for couples things to do in Manhattan, I recommend going to One Vanderbilt. This observation deck is unlike any other and sits atop the 4th-tallest skyscraper in NYC. Here, youll be 1,210 feet above the city, granting you incredible views of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs.

Another great thing about this observation deck is that there are different areas to visit. For example, the Levitation section features two all-glass balconies that protrude from the side of the building, so you feel like youre floating above the ground. If you go to the Infinity Room, you can grab a drink and enjoy a digital art installation showcasing the views from One Vanderbilt.

If you do plan to go to this amazing NYC rooftop, I recommend going just before sunset, especially if youll be with your partner. Here, you can watch an amazing sunset over the Manhattan skyline, so you wont regret it. Just be sure to book a ticket in advance, so you can secure your spot.

Okay. So before we swan dive headfirst into this hella awesome post about cool museums in NYC, lets first discuss accommodation options and some of the best areas to stay in NYC.

Because Im gonna keep it real for you. New York is expensive with a capital E. Therefore, it will be a bit of a challenge to find a hotel/hostel that costs less than $100 per night.

Pod 39 Hidden away inside the always lovely Murray Hill neighborhood , this uber-modern, super posh pod hotel has a fantastic assortment of rooms that start at just $120 per night. And yes, that price is ridiculously cheap for NYC.

Are they on the smallish side of things? Yeah, for sure. But where their rooms lack in space they more than make up for with modern amenities, friendliness, and an insane level of cleanliness.

So, if you stay at Pod 39, youll have everything you need for a comfy, although slightly cozy, stay, And, added bonus? Youll actually get to stay inside an awesome, residential home from 1918 and can choose between queen-size beds or stainless-steel bunk beds with TVs and bedside shelves. Yup, feel free to oh and ah at will.

The Museum Of Modern Art

Home to world-renowned paintings like Vincent van Goghs The Starry Night, Claude Monets Water Lilies and notable works by Warhol, Basquiat and Dali, its no wonder MoMA is constantly crowded with happy visitors.

You dont have to be an avid art connoisseur to appreciate the real-life paintings you grew up studying in school. The painting are well curated and displayed in a modern and airy environment for an experience anyone can enjoy.

Must see at MoMA: The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhols Campbell Soup Cans, Frida Kahlos Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair, Monets Water Lilies, The Persistence of Memory by Dali, and Picassos work.

No matter the time of year, a visit to Bryant Park is a great thing to do in Manhattan. You can find this popular park along Fifth Avenue, between 40th and 42nd Streets.

Bryant Park is modeled in the French style, with lots of sculptures, statues, and memorials. The sprawling lawns and walking paths make it the perfect place to go in Manhattan if you want to stretch your legs and get some fresh air. Of course, its always a good time to go to the park, and while youre there, you should also visit the New York Public Library. Located in the eastern part of Bryant Park, this Neo-Classical building is the NY Public Librarys main branch and the third-largest library in the world. Among its 20 rooms are a childrens library, a computer lab, and a study with a marble fireplace. You cant take out any books without a library card, but its still worth going inside and exploring this literary paradise.

Seeing is believing at Museum of Illusions in NYC

Chelsea Market is a mainstay in the city and a fun place in Manhattan to visit day or night. The former Nabisco factory takes up a full city block and sells everything from food and specialty items to arts, crafts, and clothing.

Perusing the vendor stalls at Chelsea Market is a great Manhattan activity for friends and the perfect thing to do on a rainy day. Dont forget to check out Pearl River Mart, a popular Asian American retailer.

So, I have compiled my local list of the coolest museums in New York for your visit. Youre bound to enjoy a vacation filled with the weirdest and most wonderful the city has to offer.

How many museums to visit?

For tourists, the number of museums in the city can be overwhelming, and I can guarantee you wont make it to all of them during your visit. I like to tell people to plan to see one or two large museums, and at least one of the citys smaller ones during each trip.

Do I need to book tickets early for NYC museums?

To stay on the safe side, book your museum tickets early, especially for special exhibits. Things sell out fast in New York.

Whats the most interesting museum in New York?

My all-time favorite museum is a bit cliché, but The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or simply The Met, is one of those places that you can visit 10 times, and still discover something new each time. Trust me, I know I used to live a few blocks away and would visit a couple times a year. It is definitely one of the coolest and most interesting museums in NYC.
