Stock Market Hours In The Us & Canada

Coronavirus Progress: NYSE Set To Open Trading Floor Tuesday For First Time Since March 23

The NYSE and the NASDAQ are the two main American exchanges, both of which are headquartered in New York City. They are each open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. Both markets close for nine federal holidays per year, including New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Toronto Stock Exchange, or TMX Group, headquartered in Toronto, is also open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST. It closes for 10 holidays per year, including New Years Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Boxing Day. It has modified hours on Christmas Eve.

Most Active Hours = When Two Sessions Overlap:

Sydney and Tokyo: between 7:00 pm 2:00 am EST

London and Tokyo: between 3:00 am 4:00am EST

For example, trading EUR/USD, GBP/USD currency pairs would give good results between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon EST when two markets for those currencies are active.

At those overlapping trading hours you’ll find the highest volume of trades and therefore more chances to win in the foreign currency exchange market.

Why You Should Trade During Certain Forex Trading Hours

Theoretically, it is true that there is no central exchange in the Forex market, and anyone can buy and sell currencies any time of the day or any day of the week.

Nonetheless, to trade a Forex pair, you need a counterparty. To buy something you need someone else to sell you want you are trying to buy and vice versa. So, if you are trying to buy USD/JPY in the middle of the night when nobody in the United States or Japan are awake, then there is a good chance that you will have a hard time doing business. This is why in practice you should spend your active trading hours when there are ample buyers and sellers in the market.

Even if some brokers allow trading during the weekends, the prices of various currency pairs hardly move on Saturday and Sunday. If you are a short-term day trader, who opens and closes trades within a day, trading outside banking hours in major financial centers around the world will also feel like you are trading during the weekend. Because if major financial institutions and professional traders are not placing huge orders that move the market, there is no reason for the solid trends to take place.

Hence, the concept of Forex Market Hours derives from the notion that when major financial markets are open in a given time zone, the volume and liquidity in the market remains high, which in turn reduces the difference between the bid and ask prices and helps traders to fill their orders relatively easily without incurring slippage.

Asian Stock Market Hours

Asian stock market hours fall into the early shift of global market trading. In a lot of Asian countries, lunch breaks are common practice so its important to know when trading will stop and restart. There is typically less liquidity anyway during the middle of the day, as most volume is found at the start and end of the day.

In some other Asian countries such as India and South Korea lunch breaks were banned in order to encourage more market activity.

Most Asian trading hours are only between 4 hours and 6 and a half hours long. These shorter trading sessions see much less activity than other global sessions.

Us Stock Market Timings

Around the world, there are several stock exchanges where traders and stockbrokers buy and sell a wide variety of securities. These are mostly shares floated by listed companies, derivatives, bonds, and varying percentages of stock. All stock exchanges also act as platforms that listed companies use to raise capital.

The first official stock exchange was set up in the Netherlands in 1602. It was established in Amsterdam, then one of the worlds most important trading hubs, under the auspices of the vast Dutch East India Company.

Modern stock markets are more than just a junction where buyers and sellers come together. The US Stock Market, or a similar establishment in any other country, is a barometer of that countrys economic condition. They are run as independent entities as such, there is a well-defined US Stock Market time.

When market conditions are fair, stock prices maintain a steady rate of growth.

In times of economic challenges like depressions and recessions, stock exchanges will suffer. In the past, there have been several market crashes in the United States and comparable economies.

A Money And Merchant Filled History Of The Nyse

It all started on May 17, 1792, when 24 brokers and merchants met under a buttonwood tree. At the time, this tree was the tallest thing in Lower Manhattan, which, in retrospect, is a pretty appropriate setting to sign an agreement that would grow to play a very significant role in both the United States and global economies.

It was under this tree that these two dozen individuals signed the Buttonwood Agreement, establishing the grounds for trading at what was then called the New York Stock & Exchange Board.

That name was shortened in 1863 to what we know today: the New York Stock Exchange.

Guide tip: To commemorate the document that led to its creation, the stock exchange planted a new buttonwood tree out front. The tree isnt nearly as full or towering as the original, but its the symbolism that counts. Snap a pic in front of the tree and tell all your friends you saw a replica of the most important tree in NYC then watch as theyre amazed.

Why Some Of The Forex Trading Hours Are More Active Than Others

Technically speaking, if you exchange 200 U.S. Dollars to get some British Pound for pocket money at an Airport Foreign Exchange Kiosk after arriving in London, in the middle of the night, it would be also considered as a foreign exchange trade. However, as you can guess by now, large billion-dollar, cross-border, transactions do not happen at 3 a.m. at the parking lot of the Heathrow Airport.

These market-moving transactions happen among large banks during their respective banking hours.

Moreover, not all branches of a certain big bank will do these large-scale cross-border transactions. For example, a small branch of the Bank of America in Louisville, Kentucky. However, its downtown Manhattan branch in New York will certainly engage in large-scale foreign exchange deals. Similarly, a branch of the Swiss multinational investment bank, UBS Group AG, in Bangkok will have a lower transaction volume in the Forex market compared to its branch located in a major Asian financial hub like Singapore. Hence, banking hours in the time zone of major financial centers like Tokyo in Japan, Singapore City in Singapore, Frankfurt in Germany, London in the United Kingdom, and New York in the United States generate the bulk of the trading volume in the Forex market. Therefore, liquidity and volatility are usually higher when markets are open in these time zones.
