Matisse: The Red Studio At Moma

New York in May Travel Guide

May 1 – September 10

Step into Henri Matisses studio at MoMAs newest exhibition. In Matisse: The Red Studio, which opens on May 1, the Museum of Modern Art will reunite The Red Studio with six paintings, three sculptures, and a ceramic piece that are depicted in the famous painting. The grand 6-by-7-foot canvas portrays Matisses studio in the Parisian suburb of Issy-le-Moulineaux. In it, the artist represents works of varying renown, and the exhibition is the first time these will be reunited since the artists death. This reunion, paired with photographs and archival material, presents an unparalleled opportunity to not only appreciate the depth and breadth of Matisses oeuvre, but to also gain insights into his working environment and artistic process.

Plus, MoMa is only a few blocks from Rockefeller Center, so enjoy the exhibition, then come have a bite to eat and get a view of the sunset from Top of the Rock.

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art

The Met is one of the biggest museums in the world, and if you only see one museum in New York, I recommend this one. It has a wide array of art, historical artifacts, photographs, and other exhibits. I like its expansive Impressionist and Greek exhibits. Its chaotic and filled with people, especially on the weekend, but since it is so big, you can usually find some quiet spots away from the crowds. Budget at least a half-day here as a few hours wont do this place justice.

1000 5th Avenue, Central Park, Upper East Side, +1 212 535 7710, metmuseum.org. Open SundayTuesday from 10am5pm, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-9pm. Admission is $25 USD .

The Caan Film Festival

Through Oct. 15 at the Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Avenue, Queens movingimage.us.

The Museum of the Moving Image has previously timed its recurring celebration of James Caan to coincide with the Cannes Film Festival as an in-joke. But after Caans death at 82 in July, the latest edition is more of a memorial. This robust survey of the actors career goes well beyond Caans most famous roles, although there are some of those, including Frank, the Chicago safecracker in Michael Manns Thief . In Karel Reiszs The Gambler , Caan stars as a professor teaching Dostoyevsky whose compulsive gambling is predicated on the Dostoyevskian notion that sheer will can overpower reality. BEN KENIGSBERG

If Democrats Lose The House They May Have New York To Blame

Republicans flipped four congressional seats in New York, the most of any state in the country. How did this happen in one of the nations most liberal states?

By Nicholas Fandos

As Democrats sought to maintain their narrow House majority in this years midterms, they counted on New York to be a crucial bulwark. Instead, as the party mostly outperformed dire predictions across the country Tuesday night, one of the nations most liberal states morphed into perhaps the most powerful drag on its chances.

Channeling angst over persistent crime and inflation, Republicans ran a nearly clean sweep through the slate of New Yorks congressional tossup races. While their party struggled in swing states like Virginia and Michigan, Republican candidates made inroads deep into the suburbs of Long Island and the Hudson Valley, and even pockets of Brooklyn and Queens, where President Biden had won handily.

When they were done, Republicans had flipped four Democratic House seats, more than any other state, and had won a staggering prize: the defeat of Representative Sean Patrick Maloney, the House Democratic campaign chairman charged with protecting his partys hold on Congress.
