Learn The History Of Trinity Church

Trinity Church is the historic and stunning parish church building at the heart of Lower Manhattans financial district.

There have been three Trinity Church buildings since 1698:

  • The first was rectangular and burned down in the Great Fire of New York City of 17776.
  • The second was taller, longer and wider but was torn down as a result of a harsh Winter in 1839.
  • Today you will find the third and final Trinity Church, completed in 1846.
  • Trinity Church can be seen from Wall Street and belongs to the same national register of historic places.

If youve seen the movie National Treasure, the treasure is located below Trinity Church but we wouldnt recommend going on a hunt anytime soon!

    Culture And Contemporary Life

Manhattan is the borough most closely associated with New York City by non-residents regionally, residents within the New York City metropolitan area, including natives of New York City’s boroughs outside Manhattan, will often describe a trip to Manhattan as “going to the City”. Journalist Walt Whitman characterized the streets of Manhattan as being traversed by “hurrying, feverish, electric crowds”.

Manhattan has been the scene of many important American cultural movements. In 1912, about 20,000 workers, a quarter of them women, marched upon Washington Square Park to commemorate the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, which killed 146 workers on March 25, 1911. Many of the women wore fitted tucked-front blouses like those manufactured by the Triangle Shirtwaist Company, a clothing style that became the working woman’s uniform and a symbol of women’s liberation, reflecting the alliance of labor and suffrage movements.

The Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s established the African-American literary canon in the United States and introduced writers Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. Manhattan’s vibrant visual art scene in the 1950s and 1960s was a center of the American pop art movement, which gave birth to such giants as Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein. The downtown pop art movement of the late 1970s included artist Andy Warhol and clubs like Serendipity 3 and Studio 54, where he socialized.

    Sip The Best Hot Chocolate

Any winter destination worth its whipped cream knows how to concoct the perfect mug of hot chocolate. Fortunately, New York City has several bakeries and restaurants that can fill the order. And no trip to New York City in the winter is complete without a piping hot cup of chocolate.

Perhaps the most famous hot chocolate in the city isn’t even hot at all. The iconic “frozen hot chocolate” at Upper East Side restaurant Serendipity 3 was made famous in the eponymous movie, Serendipity. Today, it’s a tourist and local favorite for the cold “hot” chocolate, served with a scoop of whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Be sure to book enough time for this treat, as lines are to be expected.

Then there’s the Dominique Ansel Bakery , who serves a more traditional cup. This hot chocolate is a city favorite, and is topped with a marshmallow flower.

Holiday Markets During Christmas In New York

Depending on where youre traveling from your experiences with holiday markets might be a little different compared to what youre gonna see in New York City. As a German expat living in New York, I found it very interesting that there are no such things as Glühwein or anything like that on the best Christmas Markets in NYC. Holiday markets in NYC mainly sell handmade goods, accessories and of course food. The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park is one of the most famous markets in the city.

Another great holiday market in the city is the Columbus Circle Holiday Market. This one offers a romantic atmosphere with over 100-holiday booths .

A little more Downtown the Union Square Holiday Market has more of a European feel to it. More of how I remember holiday markets in Germany. Besides the 150 food vendors, New York artists are also stationed here and show off their skills .
