Most of the major late-night hosts tape their shows in the area right around Times Square and you can attend a live show with your favorite host. The biggest ones in the area are the Late Show With Stephen Colbert at the Ed Sullivan Theater, the Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in the Rockefeller Building, or the Daily Show With Trevor Noah at the CBS Building. The best part of seeing a taping is that they are free to attend, assuming you can get a ticket. Reservations generally open a couple of months in advance, so be sure to plan ahead if you have an upcoming trip.

New York Stewart International Airport

• Location: New Windsor, New York
• Best If: You’re flying a low-cost fare on Norwegian Airlines, or another carrier.
• Avoid If: Flights are limited with no international routes.
• Distance to Times Square: The drive to Times Square will take approximately 90 minutes.

Located in New Windsor, New York, New York Stewart International Airport accommodates nearly a million passengers annually. In 2018, the Port Authority renamed the airport, adding “New York” to its title to emphasize its proximity to the city. In recent years, the airport has grown more popular thanks to inexpensive routes to Europe on Norwegian Air Shuttle. Stewart is also serviced by Allegiant Air, American Eagle, Delta Connection, and JetBlue.

Stewart International Airport is located 60 miles north of Manhattan. While plans have been discussed to implement a light-rail connection to the airport, such a service doesn’t exist yet. Passengers either must drive to the airport or take a private car service. Additionally, CoachUSA began offering bus service from Manhattan in June 2017.

There Once Was A Passage From The 42nd Street Subway Station To The Knickerbocker

In the Knickerbocker Hotels former life, there was a stairwell that linked its lower-level restaurants and bars directly with the subway. Today, vestiges of this passageway can still be found near Platform 1, where you can catch the shuttle connecting Times Square and Grand Central Station. Sadly, you can no longer pass through this doorway to the Knickerbocker but you can see proof of the passage, eternalized in a plaque above the sealed white door.

The New Victory Theater

In the heart of Times Square is the New Victory, New York Citys first and only full-time performing arts theater for kids and families. Performances are appropriate for kids 1 1/2 years old and up to 12 years old.

They have a full show calendar with a rotating array of plays, circus acts, dancing, puppets, and more. You can filter your search by age or date.

In the lobby, kids can engage with props from the current show. They also offer workshops teaching performance skills from puppetry to circus arts to hip hop.

Feel The Magic Of Midnight Moment

Every single night from 11:57 p.m. to midnight, the electronic billboards around Times Square turn into the world’s largest and longest-running digital art exhibition. The billboards are all synchronized during the nightly event, known as Midnight Moment, which has been a fixture of Times Square since 2012. If you’ve seen it once you can always go back since the digital show changes every single month, featuring a new artist each time.

Times Square is home base for many of New York City’s Broadway theaters, with theaters residing both on the square and within a few blocks. You can buy show tickets in advance, at showtime at the individual box offices, or, for budget-minded folks, in the heart of Times Square at the original TKTS booth. The TKTS booth offers same-day tickets to musicals and plays, dance performances, and off-Broadway shows at a substantial discount. You can even score certain performances for half-off their original ticketed price.

Into The New Millennium

On December 28, 1998, during a press conference attended by New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, organizers announced that the third ball would be retired for the arrival of the new millennium, and replaced by a new design constructed by Waterford Crystal. The year 2000 celebrations introduced more prominent sponsorship to the drop companies such as Discover Card, Korbel Champagne, and Panasonic were announced as official sponsors of the festivities in Times Square. The city also announced that Ron Silver would lead a committee known as “NYC 2000”, which was in charge of organizing events across the city for year 2000 celebrations.

A full day of festivities was held at Times Square to celebrate the arrival of the year 2000, which included concerts and hourly cultural presentations with parades of puppets designed by Michael Curry, representing countries entering the new year at that hour. Organizers expected a total attendance exceeding two million spectators.

The 2002 theme “Hope for Healing” was in commemoration of the , which had occurred three months earlier. 195 of the ball’s panels were engraved with the names of countries and emergency organizations that had taken casualties during the attacks, and the names of the World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and the four flights that were involved in the attacks. In December 2011, the “Hope for Healing” panels were accepted into the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
