Time To Fly: Southwest Airlines Coming To Syracuse Hancock Airport
Southwest Airlines has added flight services to Syracuse Hancock Airport, to begin this coming November.
The announcement comes just days after Sen. Chuck Schumer advocated for the airline to extend their services to Syracuse, citing it as the only upstate airport without it.
Central New York residents have been known to drive to other cities to take advantage of Southwestâs fares and alternate destinations.
âTodayâs news, landing Southwest in Syracuse, is no small peanuts,” said Senator Schumer in a statement Thursday. âAnd letâs not forget, the decision by Southwest to finally land in Syracuse solidifies years of hard work by all of us to get the airport in tip-top shape â inside and out. The federal funds weâve used to make the Syracuse airport the crown of regional and affordable travel ensures jewels of service like Southwest are here to stay, with more to come.â
At this time, a terminal and gate for Southwest have not been set, but hopeful travelers can look forward to more options at Hancock by November 14.

Syracuse, New York Southwest Airlines Co. and the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority announced today that Southwest Airlines will launch its first-ever regularly-scheduled flights from Syracuse Hancock International Airport . Southwest service to BWI will provide new access nonstop to Baltimore/Washington and additional service to more than 50 cities beyond with same-plane and connecting service. CenterState CEO President Rob Simpson, who sits on the board of the Airport Authority, said Southwest has been on their radar for a while and has the ability to change Syracuses air service market. He said it will drive down prices to the places they fly. But also, the Baltimore/Washington International Airport has been at or near the top of the most-requested nonstop flights from the business community.
It supports our defense industry and so many others, Simpson said. This is a game changer for central New York. This is a remarkable opportunity for us to continue the revitalization and the transformation of this airport into a critical component of our economic fabric.
Central New York officials met with Southwests executive delegation in April. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said he and other elected leaders presented a united front and spoke passionately about the regions future.

The Dallas-based airline confirmed this morning it will begin daily flights Nov. 14 from Syracuses Hancock International Airport.
Southwest said it will initially offer up to three daily flights each way between Syracuse and Baltimore-Washington International Airport , allowing travelers to reach more than 50 destinations on same-plane or connecting service. Fares start at $49 each way.

Southwests decision ends a 20-year effort by Syracuse airport officials and Schumer to lure the airline to Central New York.
